Yes—the collapse of Amazon’s proposed acquisition was followed immediately by major iRobot layoffs, but it was not the only cause of the company’s financial crisis. On January 29, 2024, iRobot announced plans to cut about 350 jobs after the companies ended their deal. Later filings described a larger reduction through restructuring. iRobot then filed for Chapter 11 in December 2025 and was acquired by its lender and contract manufacturer, Picea, in January 2026. The documented layoffs began in 2024; the available information does not establish a separate companywide layoff announcement in 2026.
The Amazon deal’s collapse was a major shock to iRobot: it removed a potential buyer just as the Roomba maker was struggling with falling sales, losses and competition. The deal’s termination was the immediate backdrop to the best-known round of cuts, but iRobot’s later bankruptcy and ownership change followed a broader deterioration—not the failed deal alone.
Status as of August 18, 2026: Picea completed its acquisition of iRobot on January 23, 2026, and the Chapter 11 cases were closed on February 25, 2026. The sources reviewed for this account do not establish a new, separate 2026 companywide layoff round.

Amazon and iRobot announced an all-cash acquisition agreement in August 2022. The proposed transaction was valued at approximately $1.7 billion when announced, subject to the agreement’s terms and later adjustments. Had it closed, iRobot would have become an Amazon subsidiary.

Competition authorities, including the European Commission, raised objections during the review. Amazon and iRobot ultimately mutually terminated the agreement on January 29, 2024. Amazon said the regulatory process presented “undue and disproportionate” hurdles. The formal outcome was a mutual termination after regulatory opposition and a prolonged review; it is too broad to say that regulators alone formally “forced” the deal to end.
Under the agreement, Amazon paid iRobot a $94 million termination fee. That payment provided cash, but it did not replace the longer-term strategic and financial support iRobot had expected from being acquired.
The first layoffs: 350 planned in January 2024
On the same day the termination was announced, iRobot unveiled an operational restructuring plan. It initially expected to eliminate approximately 350 positions, or about 31% of its workforce as of December 30, 2023. The company said most affected employees were expected to be notified by March 30, 2024. It estimated restructuring charges of about $12 million to $13 million, primarily severance and related benefits. These were the announced plan and estimate, not a final count of every employee eventually affected.
iRobot presented the cuts as part of a broader effort to reduce expenses after the merger ended. The company’s announcement and subsequent filings also described lower sales, the need to streamline operations and changes to its strategy. The timing makes the failed deal a clear catalyst for the immediate restructuring, but does not make it the sole underlying cause.

Why do reports give different layoff numbers?
The figures refer to different points or scopes in a changing restructuring program. They should not be added together as though each were a separate round of layoffs.

The most useful shorthand is: iRobot first announced about 350 cuts, later reported a larger completed 2024 reduction of about 440, and subsequently described a broader cumulative restructuring figure of about 572. The filings do not make these interchangeable measures of one precisely defined layoff event. See the company’s 2024 Form 10-K and 2025 annual report for the later figures.
Why iRobot was under pressure beyond the deal
iRobot’s financial challenges predated the acquisition’s termination. Its fiscal 2023 revenue was approximately $890.6 million, down from about $1.183 billion in fiscal 2022. The company also reported substantial operating losses. Its filings cite stronger competition across key markets, weaker orders from retailers and distributors, and pressure to lower costs.

Those problems made the loss of an expected acquirer more consequential. The company had less room to absorb falling demand and invest in its business while also managing expenses and debt. It cut marketing, constrained hiring, consolidated offices and focused investment more narrowly on robotic floorcare. It also moved toward a more asset-light approach, relying more on development partners and contract manufacturers for some engineering and manufacturing functions.

That is why “Amazon killed iRobot” is an incomplete explanation. The failed transaction removed a potential exit and intensified uncertainty; the underlying business was already facing declining revenue, operating losses, competitive pressure and financial constraints. The 2023 Form 10-K and 2024 Form 10-K provide the company’s financial and operating context.

iRobot continued operating and introducing products after the first layoffs, including the Roomba Combo 10 Max robot vacuum and mop with AutoWash dock. But restructuring did not resolve the company’s financial pressures. Debt, liquidity and financing difficulties became increasingly important.
On December 14, 2025, iRobot filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in Delaware and announced a court-supervised restructuring agreement involving Shenzhen PICEA Robotics and Santrum Hong Kong. Picea was iRobot’s primary contract manufacturer and secured lender. Chapter 11 is a reorganization process; the filing did not mean that Roomba production or the company immediately shut down.
The proposed restructuring transferred all of iRobot’s equity to Picea. The company said ordinary-course operations, customer support, its app, supply chain and product roadmap were expected to continue during the process. Those statements were company assurances, not guarantees of indefinite support for every product or service.

Picea completed the acquisition on January 23, 2026, and the bankruptcy case administrator records the cases as closed on February 25, 2026. The transaction was a change of control, not a conventional publicly announced cash purchase price. What the ownership change means for Roomba customers
iRobot did not disappear: it continued as an operating business under new ownership. For buyers and current owners, however, the acquisition is not proof that every model will receive support forever. The company’s continuity statements should be distinguished from model-specific commitments.
If you own or are considering a Roomba, check iRobot’s current support information for your exact model before making a decision. In particular, confirm warranty terms, availability of filters, brushes and batteries, app compatibility, cloud-dependent features, and any subscription or connected-service requirements. Older products may have different support arrangements from current models, and the available corporate announcements do not settle those details.
When comparing a Roomba with a current Roborock, Dreame or ECOVACS model, compare specific machines rather than brands alone. Consider navigation, cleaning performance on your floor types, mop and dock maintenance, replacement-part availability, warranty service, app needs and privacy practices. Prices and terms change, so verify them with the seller or manufacturer at the time of purchase rather than relying on old sale or warranty claims.
Were there new iRobot layoffs in 2026?
The major documented post-Amazon cuts began in January 2024. The company later reported further restructuring effects, but those figures do not establish a newly announced 2026 companywide layoff event. A claim about a new round would need current confirmation, such as a company announcement, court filing, employee communication or applicable notice. Without that evidence, it is more accurate to describe the known cuts as historical and distinguish them from unverified reports.
