Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps reportedly identified OpenAI-linked Stargate UAE in a public warning about U.S.- and Israeli-linked infrastructure in the Gulf. The warning, reported on April 3, 2026, was conditional: it threatened retaliation if the United States attacked Iranian power or desalination infrastructure. It is not evidence that Stargate UAE was attacked.
The project is planned, not a confirmed fully operational data center: OpenAI said its first 200-megawatt phase was expected to go live in 2026. And the widely repeated $30 billion figure is not a project cost disclosed in OpenAI’s announcement.
What is known—and what is not
- Threat: Media reports say the IRGC issued a conditional warning and used imagery to identify Stargate UAE.
- Attack: The sources cited here do not confirm an attack on the site.
- Project status: OpenAI announced the project in May 2025 and described a phased buildout, with the initial 200MW expected to go live in 2026.
- Scale: Stargate UAE is planned as a 1-gigawatt cluster within a broader UAE–U.S. AI campus planned for about 5GW.
- Price tag: Some coverage calls it a $30 billion project, but OpenAI’s announcement does not confirm that amount as the facility’s cost or valuation.
These distinctions matter: a military warning is not a strike, a planned campus is not an operating cloud region, and a reported estimate is not an official project budget.

Reports describe an IRGC video issued on April 3, 2026, featuring a warning attributed to Brigadier General Ebrahim Zolfaghari. The reported message threatened U.S.-linked energy, technology, and communications infrastructure in the region if Washington attacked Iranian civilian infrastructure, including power or desalination facilities. Stargate UAE was reportedly singled out through satellite and night-vision imagery.

The details and translated wording should be treated as media-reported descriptions of the video, rather than a verified verbatim transcript. TechCrunch and Data Center Dynamics reported on the warning; Tom’s Hardware also described the imagery. Showing a location in a video may signal surveillance or intent, but it does not by itself establish strike capability, timing, or an operational order.
What Stargate UAE is
OpenAI announced Stargate UAE on May 22, 2025, with G42, Oracle, NVIDIA, Cisco, and SoftBank. The project is in Abu Dhabi and is intended to provide large-scale computing capacity for AI workloads, with stated applications across areas including government, energy, health care, education, and transportation.
OpenAI described a 1GW Stargate UAE cluster and said its first 200MW phase was expected to go live in 2026. That cluster is part of a larger UAE–U.S. AI campus planned to reach approximately 5GW. The announced timeline describes a staged project, not a completed 1GW facility. Without a later confirmed commissioning update, it is more accurate to describe Stargate UAE as planned or being developed than as a fully operating data center.

Is the Abu Dhabi project really worth $30 billion?
The $30 billion figure appears in secondary reporting, but the cited OpenAI announcement names the partners and planned capacity without stating that the Abu Dhabi cluster costs or is worth $30 billion. Those are different claims. A figure might refer to an estimate, a broader investment, hardware, or a campus-level plan; it should not be presented as a confirmed standalone construction cost without a primary financial disclosure.
For readers assessing the headline’s number, the safe conclusion is simple: $30 billion is reported, not confirmed as the official cost of Stargate UAE by OpenAI. The project’s planned capacity is better documented than its price.
Why identify an AI data center?
The site represents more than a collection of servers. It is a high-profile U.S.-linked technology project in the Gulf, built through partnerships between major international technology companies and the UAE. Naming it can serve as a form of strategic signaling even if no strike follows.
One possible interpretation is that the warning seeks to deter U.S. escalation, raise the perceived cost of Gulf cooperation with Washington, or make investors and insurers consider regional security exposure. Those are analytical possibilities, not verified statements of Iran’s precise intent.

Large AI campuses also depend on a tightly connected set of physical systems: electricity and backup power, cooling, fiber links, networking, specialized chips, logistics, and site security. A disruption to any one of those systems could matter to a facility. That does not mean every component is equally vulnerable or that a threat proves an ability to disable the site.
The strategic trade-off is broader than this incident. The Gulf can offer capital, energy, connectivity, and government backing for ambitious infrastructure. But concentrating compute, power systems, cooling, and network connections in one campus can also concentrate exposure to conflict, cyber incidents, supply-chain delays, or other disruptions. It would depend on whether the site was operating, what workloads it handled, how it connected to other regions, and what geographic redundancy and failover arrangements were in place. Damage to a construction site, an individual power supply, a network segment, or a live compute region would have different consequences.
The available sources do not establish that Stargate UAE hosts all—or any specified share—of ChatGPT’s production workload. Nor do they show that an incident there would automatically interrupt ChatGPT or OpenAI’s services worldwide. The grounded concern is narrower: a disruption could affect the facility and workloads dependent on it, with broader effects contingent on OpenAI’s architecture and recovery arrangements.

How much weight should the warning carry?
It warrants attention because reports attribute it to the IRGC, describe a specific facility being visually highlighted, and place the warning in a period of regional tension. But a public warning is not the same as an attack or an imminent strike. Imagery can be intended to intimidate or demonstrate awareness; by itself, it does not prove the site is vulnerable or that an operation is underway.
Reporting about other data centers in the region should also be kept separate. Some coverage has discussed claims that AWS or Oracle facilities in the UAE or Bahrain were affected during the conflict. Those claims should be described as reported unless confirmed by a provider notice, government statement, regulator, or other direct evidence; they do not establish that Stargate UAE was hit.
What remains unclear
- Whether Stargate UAE had entered service or what capacity, if any, was operating at the time of the warning.
- Whether OpenAI or UAE authorities issued a specific security response.
- What exact financial commitments the $30 billion estimate represents, if any.
- Whether, and to what extent, OpenAI production workloads were assigned to the site.
- Whether the threat led to any subsequent action against Stargate UAE.
The best-supported reading is a reported, conditional military warning that publicly identified a strategically important AI project—not a confirmed attack on a $30 billion operating data center, and not proof of an impending outage for OpenAI users.
