As of August 18, 2026, the U.S. iPhone 17 lineup starts at $799 for the iPhone 17, $999 for the iPhone Air, $1,099 for the iPhone 17 Pro, and $1,199 for the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Those are Apple’s advertised prices before sales tax and extras. The lineup was announced on September 9, 2025, and became available on September 19, 2025, so this is a current price guide—not a forecast.
The most expensive configuration is the 2TB iPhone 17 Pro Max at $1,999. Storage can add as much as $800 to the entry price, while trade-in and carrier promotions may reduce what you pay—but usually with different terms and restrictions.
iPhone 17 prices at a glance
The following are U.S. prices listed by Apple. They generally exclude sales tax, AppleCare+, accessories, wireless service and any applicable financing costs.

Apple’s monthly figures are displayed financing figures, not universal payment quotes. The amount can depend on whether you select an unlocked or “connect later” purchase, a carrier activation route, financing approval and available promotions. iPhone 17: $799 for 256GB
The standard iPhone 17 starts at $799 for 256GB. The 512GB model costs $999, making the storage upgrade a $200 premium.
The 256GB entry capacity is important when comparing the iPhone 17 with older models: buyers get twice the previous 128GB entry capacity without crossing the $800 pre-tax threshold. For most users who stream media, use cloud storage and take ordinary photos and videos, 256GB should be the sensible starting point.
Choose 512GB if you regularly record large video files, keep extensive offline media or expect to keep the phone for several years without managing storage. Otherwise, the extra $200 may be better spent on ownership costs such as a case, AppleCare+ or service.

iPhone Air: $999 starting price
The iPhone Air starts at $999 with 256GB. The 512GB version is $1,199 and the 1TB version is $1,399. Each storage step adds $200.
Its value proposition is different from the Pro models. The Air occupies a $999 starting-price position and is aimed at buyers who place a high value on thinness and design. It is not automatically a better deal than the iPhone 17 Pro: the Pro models are positioned around higher-end camera and performance features, while the Air’s appeal is its form factor.

The Air makes the most sense if you want a thinner phone and are comfortable giving up some Pro-oriented capabilities. If cameras, sustained performance or maximum battery capacity matter more than thinness, compare it carefully with the $1,099 iPhone 17 Pro.

iPhone 17 Pro: $1,099 starting price
The iPhone 17 Pro starts at $1,099 for 256GB. Storage options are $1,299 for 512GB and $1,499 for 1TB.
Compared with the previous Pro generation’s entry price, the headline starting price is $100 higher. That comparison needs context: the iPhone 17 Pro starts with 256GB rather than 128GB. So calling it simply a $100 price hike hides the fact that the included entry storage doubled. A fair comparison of identical storage may produce a different result.
The Pro is the more logical choice for buyers who will use its camera system and performance features rather than merely wanting the newest iPhone. The 256GB version is likely enough for general use; 512GB or 1TB is more defensible for frequent high-resolution video recording, large local media libraries or long replacement cycles.

iPhone 17 Pro Max: from $1,199, up to $1,999
The iPhone 17 Pro Max starts at $1,199 for 256GB. It costs $1,399 with 512GB, $1,599 with 1TB and $1,999 with 2TB.
At equivalent 256GB entry storage, the Pro Max costs $100 more than the iPhone 17 Pro. That premium buys the larger Pro Max form factor and is most relevant to shoppers who prioritize display size and battery endurance.
The 2TB version is the lineup’s maximum configuration and costs $1,999 before tax, AppleCare+, accessories or service. The jump from 1TB to 2TB is $400 rather than the usual $200 storage step. Most buyers will not need 2TB; it is primarily for people who routinely record large amounts of high-resolution video, keep substantial files locally or want to minimize dependence on cloud storage.

Storage upgrades are permanent, unlike cloud storage subscriptions, so consider how much space you actually use. Paying $200 or $400 for capacity you never fill is poor value. Conversely, replacing a phone early because it is constantly full can cost more than choosing the larger capacity initially.
Apple price, unlocked price and carrier price are not the same thing
Apple’s “from” price is a useful baseline, but your checkout total may vary based on the purchase path. Apple may show different signals when you select “Connect on your own later”, choose a carrier activation option or apply a promotional offer.
- Pay Apple’s advertised price: You pay the selected phone price before tax and extras, subject to the checkout option you choose.
- Buy unlocked or connect later: This offers more carrier flexibility, but confirm the final price and whether any financing option is available for your configuration.
- Use carrier financing: You may pay monthly through a carrier installment agreement. The phone may be discounted through bill credits, but the offer can require a qualifying plan, trade-in, port-in or a specified installment period.
- Use a carrier promotion: “Free” commonly means the carrier offsets eligible installments with monthly credits. It usually does not mean an unconditional phone with no service commitment.
Carrier offers are especially risky for buyers who may switch carriers soon. Leaving early, changing plans or paying off the device can affect remaining credits. Read the terms on Apple’s carrier-offers page and the carrier’s own agreement.

How trade-in changes the real price
Apple’s current product-page signal shows approximately $35 to $695 in Apple Trade In credit toward an iPhone 17, depending on the device and its condition. Apple’s launch material cited up to $700 for eligible iPhone 13-or-newer trade-ins and up to $1,100 through select carrier offers for eligible Pro purchases. Those figures are not guaranteed August 2026 checkout discounts: values and eligibility change over time.

- Apple Trade In: Apple assesses the device, model, storage and condition and applies the resulting credit through its trade-in process.
- Carrier promotion: The advertised amount may arrive as monthly bill credits over an installment period, rather than as an immediate reduction.
- “Any condition” offers: These still have eligibility rules. A damaged device may qualify only for a particular promotion, plan or model, and the carrier’s terms control.
Before accepting a deal, compare the net value—not just the headline credit. A $1,100 carrier promotion can be worth less than a smaller immediate trade-in if it requires a more expensive plan or you are unlikely to remain with that carrier long enough to receive every credit.
What you will actually pay
The advertised $799, $999, $1,099 or $1,199 price is not a nationwide final total. Your purchase may also include:
- State and local sales tax
- AppleCare+ or another protection plan
- A case
- A power adapter, if you do not already have a compatible one
- Monthly wireless service
- Financing interest or fees, if applicable
- International taxes, duties or currency conversion when buying outside the U.S.
Because U.S. sales tax varies by location, there is no single nationwide checkout price. A $999 phone can exceed $1,000 after tax before you add protection or accessories.
For a realistic budget, calculate the phone price after trade-in, add local tax, then include the cost of service and any ownership products over the period you expect to keep the device. Apple’s AppleCare+ page is the appropriate place to check current coverage and pricing for your selected model; premiums vary by model, coverage and purchase date.

Which iPhone 17 is the best value?

For most budget-conscious upgraders, the iPhone 17 is the clearest value. It delivers the current-generation starting point without crossing $1,000 before tax and has a more useful 256GB base capacity. Choose the Air if thinness is your main priority, the Pro if you will use its camera and performance features, and the Pro Max if size, endurance and storage matter more than price.
Existing iPhone owners who do not need the newest generation should also compare the iPhone 17e and iPhone 16 family. A previous-generation or lower-tier model can reduce the purchase price substantially, but check live stock and configuration before assuming a particular deal is available.
Bottom line
The iPhone 17 price ladder is $799, $999, $1,099 and $1,199 for the 17, Air, 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max, respectively. Storage adds $200 at most steps, while the 2TB Pro Max reaches $1,999. The cheapest headline price is not always the cheapest ownership choice: compare tax, storage, service, trade-in terms and the length of any carrier-credit commitment before you buy.
