Partly—but the headline needs a qualification. The iPhone 16e captured a larger share of U.S. iPhone sales than the third-generation iPhone SE did in comparable periods, even though the 16e launched at $599 versus $429 for the SE. That is a sales-share comparison, not proof that Apple sold more absolute units worldwide.

The evidence also varies by region: early U.S. data was positive, while European data showed the iPhone 16e trailing both the 2022 and 2020 iPhone SE in comparable first-month sales.

What the sales data actually shows

CIRP reported that the iPhone 16e represented 7% of U.S. iPhone unit sales in the March 2025 quarter. The model was available for only part of that quarter, after its February 28 launch.

In CIRP’s next report, covering the first full quarter of availability, the iPhone 16e reached 11% of U.S. iPhone sales. The third-generation iPhone SE represented 5% in the comparable year-ago quarter.

Those figures support a narrower but defensible conclusion: the 16e performed better than the SE on its share of U.S. iPhone sales. They do not disclose global unit totals, and they do not prove that the 16e sold more individual phones than every SE launch.

CIRP’s March-quarter report is based on research among Apple customers in the United States, rather than Apple’s official model-by-model shipment ledger. Apple generally does not publish iPhone unit sales by model.

CIRP’s full-quarter report also said the 16e took share from older iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 models. That matters because the result was not necessarily a simple transfer of buyers from the SE.

The separate “60% more sales” claim

Some coverage, including PhoneArena’s report, described the iPhone 16e as recording a 60% increase in sales during its first three days compared with the previous iPhone SE.

That number should be treated as an attributed launch-sales claim, not combined with CIRP’s figures as though they came from the same dataset. The underlying report does not clearly establish the geography, sample, methodology, or whether “sales” means absolute units, orders, or a retailer or channel estimate.

In practical terms, there are several different claims someone might mean by “surpassed”:

  • Sales share: the model’s percentage of all iPhone sales.
  • Absolute units: the total number of phones sold.
  • Launch velocity: sales during the first three days or first week.
  • Comparable-quarter performance: one model’s share compared with another model’s share in a different year.
  • Regional performance: results in the United States, Europe, or worldwide.

The strongest available evidence supports the first and fourth descriptions in the U.S.; it does not establish a global absolute-unit victory.

The price increased by about 40%

The relevant predecessor is the third-generation iPhone SE, introduced in 2022 at a U.S. starting price of $429. The iPhone 16e launched at $599—a nominal increase of $170, or roughly 40%.

The comparison is not perfectly like-for-like because storage configurations differed: the 16e starts with 128GB, while the SE’s launch configurations and storage tiers were different. Still, the headline price increase was substantial.

Apple announced the iPhone 16e on February 19, 2025. Preorders opened February 21, and availability began February 28, according to Apple’s launch announcement.

Why the 16e may have appealed to U.S. buyers

The 16e was not simply an SE with a faster processor. Apple repositioned it as the entry-level member of the current iPhone 16 family.

A much more modern design

Compared with the SE’s 4.7-inch LCD and Home button, the 16e has a 6.1-inch OLED display, an edge-to-edge design, Face ID, USB-C, and IP68 water and dust resistance. It also replaces the SE’s small-phone format with a physically larger handset.

  • apple iphone 16e; iphone 16e 128gb; apple smartphone; iphone eSIM; unlocked iphone

For buyers upgrading from an older iPhone, that can make the 16e feel like a substantial upgrade rather than a budget compromise. The trade-off is that it is not a traditional compact-phone successor and does not retain Touch ID.

Current-generation performance

The 16e uses Apple’s A18 chip and supports Apple Intelligence. Apple also lists a 48MP Fusion camera with integrated 2x optical-quality zoom, 5G connectivity, satellite features, and its C1 modem among the device’s features.

These specifications may have made the 16e easier to justify for buyers who wanted a new phone with a longer expected support runway. But the available data does not prove that Apple Intelligence, the modem, or any individual feature caused the sales result.

Battery and financing can change the price calculation

Apple claimed that the 16e offers up to 12 hours more battery life than all generations of iPhone SE. That is an Apple estimate under Apple’s test conditions, not an independent real-world battery test.

Meanwhile, many consumers buy iPhones through carrier installments, trade-in credits, or other promotions. A $170 difference in list price may be less visible when spread across monthly payments. Those offers can also have important conditions, including an eligible trade-in, a qualifying plan, and credits that arrive over several years. A lower monthly payment is not automatically a lower total cost.

There was no cheaper new SE beside it

After Apple discontinued the SE, the 16e became the company’s lowest-priced current-generation iPhone. That may have reduced internal substitution: shoppers wanting a new iPhone had fewer ways to pay less while staying within Apple’s current lineup.

  • There will be no visible cosmetic imperfections when held at an arm’s length. There will be no visible cosmetic imperfections when held at an arm’s length.
  • Accessories will not be original, but will be compatible and fully functional. Product may come in generic Box.

This is a market-structure explanation, not a disclosed statement from Apple. It also means the 16e’s result can be read as evidence of demand for a modern, lower-priced iPhone—not necessarily a rejection of the SE’s low-price strategy.

Europe tells a different story

The U.S. result should not be turned into a worldwide claim. Counterpoint reported that during the iPhone 16e’s first full month in Europe:

  • The 16e ranked ninth among the region’s best-selling smartphones.
  • It represented 8% of Apple’s regional sales and 2% of total smartphone sales.
  • It ranked seventh in Western Europe.
  • Its sales were 17% below the iPhone SE 2022 and 20% below the iPhone SE 2020 in comparable first-month periods.

Counterpoint cited the 16e’s higher price, economic conditions, and greater availability of refurbished iPhones as factors that could limit demand. The regional split is important for shoppers: a price increase that appears manageable in one market can be much more restrictive in another.

The broader iPhone lineup also shifted

CIRP’s March-quarter figures, summarized by MacRumors, showed that the complete iPhone 16 lineup represented 74% of U.S. iPhone sales, compared with 68% for the four-model iPhone 15 lineup in the comparable quarter.

The standard iPhone 16 rose to 20% from 14% for the iPhone 15, while the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max together fell to 38% from 45% for the previous year’s Pro models. Legacy iPhones fell to 26% from 32%.

That pattern suggests the 16e’s performance was part of a broader move toward newer, non-Pro iPhones. It was not necessarily an isolated triumph over the SE.

What this means for buyers

Consider the iPhone 16e if:

  • You want the least expensive new iPhone in the current-generation lineup.
  • You value an OLED display, Face ID, USB-C, newer hardware, and Apple Intelligence.
  • You expect to keep the phone for several years and prefer a current model.
  • A carrier promotion or trade-in materially reduces your effective cost without forcing an unsuitable plan.

Look at a refurbished SE if:

  • Your priority is the lowest upfront Apple price.
  • You specifically want a smaller phone or Touch ID.
  • You accept an older processor, battery, design, and shorter remaining support runway.

Compare the full purchase price, battery condition, warranty, storage, and expected software-support period—not just the advertised discount. Apple’s Certified Refurbished store is one official source, although live availability and pricing change.

Consider a standard iPhone 16 if:

You want a more complete camera and feature set and can afford the higher price. Check the current price gap at the time of purchase through Apple’s buying page, because discounts and lineup changes can alter the value calculation.

Consider Android if:

You are willing to leave Apple’s ecosystem and prioritize hardware-per-dollar value, larger displays, more cameras, or faster charging. Google’s Pixel phones and Samsung’s Galaxy phones are relevant alternatives. Switching may be less attractive if you depend on iMessage, FaceTime, Apple Watch integration, or other Apple services.

Bottom line

The iPhone 16e appears to have beaten the third-generation iPhone SE in early U.S. sales share, despite costing $170 more at launch. The stronger full-quarter comparison was 11% of U.S. iPhone sales for the 16e versus 5% for the SE in the comparable year-ago quarter.

But that is not the same as proving higher worldwide unit sales. The 60% first-three-day figure comes from a separate report with limited methodological detail, and European data showed the 16e trailing both recent SE generations. The fairest conclusion is that Apple successfully moved its entry point into the modern iPhone lineup—and U.S. buyers accepted the higher price more readily than the old SE comparison might suggest.
