Rome-based cybersecurity company Exein announced €100 million in additional funding on December 18, 2025. Blue Cloud Ventures led the financing, with participation from HV Capital, Intrepid Growth Partners, Geodesic Capital, and J.P. Morgan. Exein said the investment brings its total fundraising for 2025 to €170 million, including a €70 million Series C announced in July.
The financing is intended to fund international expansion, product development, artificial-intelligence security initiatives, and a planned acquisition program in 2026. Exein describes its technology as security embedded within firmware and device operating environments, rather than protection applied only at the network perimeter.
What Exein’s €100 million financing means
Exein has not described the December financing as a Series D. The most precise description is that the company raised €100 million in additional funding after its July 2025 Series C. Secondary coverage has put the amount at approximately $117 million, but that dollar figure reflects the exchange-rate context used in that coverage rather than a current conversion.

The company said the new capital will support expansion in the United States and Asia-Pacific, development of a new generation of embedded runtime-security products, AI-security capabilities, and a multi-deal mergers-and-acquisitions program planned for Europe and the United States in 2026. The investor announcement also said Exein’s valuation had nearly doubled between the July financing and the December extension, but no valuation figure was disclosed.
Exein’s funding announcement is the primary source for the financing details.
Exein’s 2025 fundraising total
Exein said the December investment brings its 2025 fundraising total to €170 million. That figure combines the €100 million additional financing with the company’s €70 million Series C, announced on July 16, 2025.
It should not automatically be interpreted as Exein’s lifetime fundraising total. The company has disclosed earlier rounds, and adding every publicly reported financing mechanically produces a figure above €191 million. Funding announcements can refer to different transaction structures, extensions, or reporting periods, so the €170 million figure is best understood specifically as Exein’s stated total raised during calendar year 2025.

What Exein builds
Founded in 2018 by Gianni Cuozzo, who remains CEO according to SecurityWeek’s coverage, Exein began as an embedded and IoT-security company. Its current positioning is broader, covering embedded systems, so-called Physical AI, Linux environments, cloud workloads, Kubernetes, and AI agents.
The company’s platform has two central components: Exein Analyzer for development and pre-release security, and Exein Runtime for protection after devices are deployed.
Exein Analyzer: firmware and software-supply-chain analysis
According to Exein’s Analyzer product page, Analyzer can scan final firmware binaries and analyze software bills of materials when binaries are unavailable. It is designed to identify dependencies, vendored libraries, third-party drivers, and vulnerabilities without requiring access to all underlying source code.
The platform also uses reachability scoring to help prioritize vulnerabilities that may be exploitable in a particular device, rather than treating every software component as equally urgent. Exein says Analyzer can provide AI-assisted remediation guidance and integrate with Yocto, Buildroot, and CI/CD pipelines. Its listed environments include Linux, RTOS, UEFI, Docker, Android, and U-Boot.

In practical terms, Analyzer addresses the question: What software is inside this device, and which weaknesses matter before the firmware is released?
Exein Runtime: on-device monitoring and response
Runtime addresses a different stage of the product lifecycle. Exein says its Runtime platform runs within the device’s operating environment, between the hardware and applications, to detect and respond to suspicious behavior.

The current product description refers to kernel-native or on-device detection, support for Linux and RTOS-based devices, fleet monitoring, incident tracing, and evidence generation. It also mentions Rust and eBPF. An older Exein product page describes process-anomaly detection, filesystem monitoring, path-based rules, on-device machine learning, and a modular architecture. Those older technical details may be product-version-specific and should not automatically be treated as the current implementation.
Exein says Runtime is designed for resource-constrained devices and can monitor filesystem, process, and network activity, enforce policies, and block malicious behavior at runtime. On-device controls may continue to operate when connectivity is limited or intermittent, but these are company product claims rather than independently verified performance findings.
Why embedded security is attracting investment
Security programs traditionally emphasize networks, endpoints, cloud infrastructure, and centralized monitoring. Embedded devices create a different problem: the software is distributed across physical products that may have limited memory, processing power, connectivity, and update capability.
A device-level approach can give manufacturers visibility into the firmware shipped to customers and into behavior after deployment. It may also help companies collect evidence for vulnerability management and regulatory processes. That is particularly relevant as manufacturers face greater pressure to document secure development, software components, vulnerability handling, updates, and incident response.
Exein links its platform to the EU Cyber Resilience Act, cybersecurity requirements associated with RED 3.3, the U.S. Cyber Trust Mark, ETSI EN 303 645, IEC 62443, and ISO 26262. However, using a security platform does not automatically make a product compliant. Compliance depends on the product category, risk assessment, technical documentation, secure-development processes, vulnerability disclosure procedures, updates, and other organizational controls.
Embedded runtime security is also not a replacement for secure boot, firmware signing, hardware roots of trust, patch management, network segmentation, strong identity controls, physical tamper resistance, or secure manufacturing. Exein’s own industrial-IoT material presents device security as one layer of a broader defense strategy.
How Exein plans to use the money
The stated spending priorities are:
- International expansion: building the company’s presence in the United States and Asia-Pacific.
- Product development: investing in embedded runtime-security capabilities.
- AI security: developing protection for AI infrastructure and large language models, alongside Exein’s broader Physical-AI positioning.
- Mergers and acquisitions: pursuing multiple acquisitions in Europe and the United States during 2026.
- Industry relationships: expanding work with manufacturers, semiconductor companies, and chipset providers.
The financing therefore represents more than an incremental product investment. It gives Exein capital to broaden its category from embedded and IoT security toward a wider platform for physical devices and AI-related infrastructure.

Reported commercial traction—and what remains unclear
Exein says its revenue grew fivefold year over year and that it has expanded among customers in critical infrastructure and advanced manufacturing. The company has also highlighted relationships with manufacturers and chipset providers including Kontron and MediaTek.

Its current website claims that more than 1 billion devices are protected at runtime. That figure should be treated as company-reported. Public materials do not explain in enough detail whether it counts direct customer deployments, OEM integrations, chipset-level distribution, or a combination of those categories. Earlier company announcements cited smaller device counts, so the figures cannot be independently reconciled from the available public information.
Similarly, Exein has described itself as the world’s largest embedded runtime-security provider by devices protected. That is a company positioning claim, not an independently audited market ranking. The available announcements also do not disclose a precise valuation, standard public pricing, or a complete methodology for measuring protected devices and revenue growth.
Who might consider Exein?
Exein may be relevant to an OEM, semiconductor company, industrial-equipment manufacturer, robotics company, or other organization that designs or operates embedded devices. It may be especially relevant where the buyer needs:
- Firmware analysis without distributing complete source code.
- Security controls on devices already deployed in the field.
- Visibility despite limited connectivity or constrained hardware.
- Evidence linking firmware findings and device behavior to compliance work.
- Integration with development systems such as Yocto, Buildroot, and CI/CD pipelines.
It may be a poor fit for a company seeking conventional enterprise endpoint protection, a simple network scanner, or a self-serve product with published pricing. A fleet that cannot modify its firmware, integrate an agent, or work with its OEM may also face deployment constraints.
Exein’s public buying path is sales-led, using “Book a Demo” and “Request a Demo” calls to action rather than published per-device or per-seat pricing. A serious buyer should ask about supported processor architectures, kernels and RTOS versions, memory and power overhead, offline operation, policy rollback, false positives, cryptographic-key protection, SIEM and device-management integrations, licensing metrics, and support commitments.
How it differs from network-centric security tools
Exein’s core distinction is that Analyzer and Runtime are aimed at the firmware and device layers. Other security platforms may be more appropriate when the main requirement is network visibility, asset discovery, segmentation, or operational-technology monitoring.
Potential categories to investigate include Armis, Forescout, Claroty, Nozomi Networks, Microsoft Defender for IoT, and Sternum. These are not identical substitutes: some focus more heavily on enterprise cyber exposure or network-based OT and IoT monitoring, while Sternum is closer to the embedded runtime-security category. The right choice depends on whether protection must be built into the device, applied through the network, or delivered as part of a broader enterprise security stack.
Bottom line
Exein’s December 2025 announcement is a substantial financing event: €100 million in additional funding led by Blue Cloud Ventures, bringing the company’s reported 2025 fundraising total to €170 million. The capital is earmarked for geographic expansion, embedded and AI-security product development, and acquisitions in 2026.

The important qualification is that much of the available traction evidence—including revenue growth, device counts, and market-position claims—comes from Exein or its investors. The raise demonstrates strong financial backing for embedded and Physical-AI security, but it does not by itself prove market leadership, regulatory compliance, or product performance across every device environment.
