Intel reportedly approached Apple about investing in the chipmaker in September 2025, but the available public evidence does not establish that Apple bought Intel shares. A separate story emerged in June 2026, when President Donald Trump said the companies had agreed to work together on chip design and manufacturing in the United States. That statement did not disclose a finalized commercial deal or its terms. The distinction matters: an equity investment would give Intel capital; a foundry relationship would make Intel a supplier. Neither should be treated as proof of the other.
What Intel reportedly asked Apple for
On September 24, 2025, Bloomberg reported that Intel had approached Apple about a potential direct investment. The talks were described as early-stage, not a completed transaction or binding commitment. Contemporaneous reporting summarized the Bloomberg report as Intel seeking an investment from Apple.
The reported account did not specify an investment amount, valuation, security type, share price, governance rights, or a manufacturing commitment from Apple. It therefore does not support claims that Apple agreed to buy a stake, promised to make chips with Intel, or obtained a particular role in Intel’s strategy.

On August 22, 2025, Intel announced an agreement under which the U.S. government would invest $8.9 billion in Intel common stock. Intel’s filings also discussed external funding, including SoftBank’s investment; Nvidia separately announced a $5 billion investment in September. Those transactions provide context for Intel’s outreach, but they do not establish that Apple participated. Intel’s announcement of the government investment sets out that transaction.

Did Apple invest in Intel?
No completed Apple equity investment is established by the public material cited here. The 2025 story was about a reported approach and early discussions. A later filing naming Apple as an investor, a definitive securities agreement, or an on-the-record statement from Apple or Intel would be stronger evidence of a completed investment. The cited reporting and filings do not provide that confirmation.
That answer is narrower than saying no discussions ever took place: private negotiations can occur without a public announcement. But a reported request is not a purchase, and a political statement about cooperation is not evidence that Apple acquired Intel securities.
What changed in June 2026
On June 18, 2026, Trump said Apple and Intel had agreed to work together to design and build chips in the United States. Axios reported that Intel shares rose sharply after the statement. But the reporting also described a lack of public confirmation from Apple and Intel of a finalized agreement. The market reaction reflected the importance investors attached to the possibility; it did not establish the deal’s scope or economics.

The public accounts cited here do not settle whether any arrangement covers wafer fabrication, advanced packaging, chiplet integration, joint design, or only preliminary discussions. They also do not identify a specific Apple product, Intel process node, production volume, supply commitment, or start date. Tom’s Hardware likewise noted the absence of public company confirmation of a finalized deal.
It is consequently more accurate to describe the June development as a reported or politically announced possibility than as a fully specified, operational foundry contract. Even if commercial talks have advanced, a statement that companies will cooperate does not answer what they have signed, what they will manufacture, or when production might begin.
Investment and chip manufacturing are different bets

One arrangement could exist without the other. Apple could invest without assigning Intel any chip production. It could also buy Intel manufacturing or packaging services without owning Intel shares. A limited packaging or test-wafer project would not necessarily mean Intel had won production of a full Apple processor.

Why Intel would want Apple as a customer
Intel is trying to build Intel Foundry into a business that manufactures chips for outside designers, rather than relying only on Intel’s own products. Its foundry offering spans wafer fabrication, advanced packaging, chiplet integration, and design-enablement services. Apple would be an attractive prospect because it designs high-volume custom chips, and a recognized customer could help demonstrate that Intel can win and serve demanding external business.

In its 2025 annual report, Intel said it needs significant external foundry customers to make next-generation leading-edge manufacturing economically viable. The filing said Intel 18A entered high-volume production in 2025 and described Intel 14A as a node designed from the outset for external customers. Intel said customers were expected to make 14A decisions in the second half of 2026 and first half of 2027. It also warned that without a significant external customer for 14A, it could pause or discontinue pursuit of later leading-edge process technologies. Intel’s annual report describes these customer and development risks.
That makes a real Apple production commitment potentially more consequential to Intel’s foundry economics than a one-time investment. But the size of the benefit would depend on details not publicly established here: which products, how many wafers, what pricing, how much packaging work, and whether the manufacturing process meets Apple’s requirements.

Why Apple might consider Intel—and what it would have to weigh
Possible reasons for Apple to explore Intel include adding manufacturing options, increasing U.S.-based production, accessing additional advanced-packaging capacity, and improving supply-chain resilience or negotiating leverage. These are plausible strategic incentives, not confirmed explanations from Apple. Political pressure to expand domestic manufacturing may also be part of the context, but the cited reporting does not establish that it was Apple’s motive.
Using another foundry is not as simple as transferring a design. Apple would need confidence in process performance, manufacturing yields, quality, security, available capacity, delivery schedules, and the economics of any arrangement. A high-volume chip generally requires extensive engineering and qualification for a particular process. A minority stake in Intel would not itself guarantee suitable production capacity or a successful ramp.

Intel, meanwhile, would have to execute against demanding customer requirements while investing in capital-intensive technology. A large customer can improve factory utilization and credibility, but it also has considerable bargaining power. Favorable pricing or reserved capacity could help win business while limiting its financial benefit. The existence of a discussion or headline alone says little about the deal’s eventual profitability.

A foundry deal would not mean Apple is returning to Intel CPUs
Apple used Intel-designed processors in Macs for years, then began moving Macs to Apple Silicon in 2020. That shift concerned who designed the processors; it does not rule out Apple using a different company to manufacture or package a chip Apple designs.
In other words, Intel as a chip designer and supplier is not the same thing as Intel Foundry as a contract manufacturer. A future manufacturing arrangement would not, by itself, mean Apple is abandoning Apple Silicon, bringing back Intel-designed Mac CPUs, or replacing TSMC for a particular product. No specific Apple chip or displaced supplier is established by the reporting cited here.
What would confirm the scope of a deal?
Look for an on-the-record Apple or Intel announcement, an Intel SEC filing identifying Apple as an investor or customer, or specific contractual and production disclosures. For a manufacturing relationship, the useful details would include whether Intel is doing wafer fabrication or packaging, which process node is involved, whether work is at the evaluation or qualification stage, and the expected production timing and volume.

Intel’s stated timetable for customer decisions on 14A—second half of 2026 into the first half of 2027—gives one relevant milestone, not proof that Apple is a customer. Likewise, evidence of test wafers or evaluation would show technical engagement but would not alone establish a high-volume supply contract.
Until those details are disclosed, the sound conclusion is limited but clear: Intel reportedly sought Apple’s investment in 2025; by June 2026, reports and Trump’s statement pointed to possible chip-design or manufacturing cooperation. The public evidence cited here does not establish that Apple bought Intel stock, committed a named chip to Intel, or signed a fully specified production deal.
