Google opened the first phase of its South Lake Union campus in Seattle in October 2019, adding about 600,000 square feet of workspace directly across the street from Amazon buildings. Despite the Google Cloud label, the site was intended for a wider mix of teams—including Android, Maps and Chrome—and the opening offered a snapshot of Google’s growing Seattle engineering presence, not a cloud-only office.
The details below describe the campus as reported at its 2019 opening. They do not establish its current occupancy, workforce or operating arrangements.
What opened in South Lake Union
The campus was planned as a five-building development. The first portion opened in 2019 and added approximately 600,000 square feet to Google’s Seattle-area footprint; a second phase was scheduled to open on October 21 that year. The opening was a milestone in a broader expansion, not the debut of a new, standalone Google Cloud headquarters. GeekWire’s October 3, 2019 report said the offices would serve Google Cloud, Android, Maps, Chrome and other engineering projects.

That distinction matters. The address made for an unusually visible symbol of competition between Google Cloud and Amazon Web Services (AWS), but the tenant mix reflected Google’s broader engineering operation. The campus should not be read as an office devoted exclusively to cloud products.

A walk through the workplace
GeekWire’s first-look report described a campus designed around more than rows of desks. The arrival areas and lobby led into long, bright white corridors inspired by Google’s search bar. Meeting spaces sat apart from quieter desk areas, with informal gathering spots and cafeterias offering free meals among the reported amenities.
There was also a game room and a makerspace. One lounge, called the “Puffy Coat,” nodded to Seattle’s outdoor culture and REI. Employee-created art gave the interiors a local touch: Google employee Daniel Romlein made a mural, and signs included the phrase “Keep your head in the cloud.” The report also noted a dog-friendly workplace. These were features of this campus as described in 2019—not proof of a universal policy or of how employees felt about the space.
Across the street from Amazon—but not on the same campus
The Google site was in South Lake Union, where Amazon had established a large urban headquarters presence. The phrase “across the street” captures the striking proximity of neighboring buildings; it does not mean Google and Amazon shared a campus, or that every Amazon Seattle office sat opposite the Google development. Amazon describes its Seattle headquarters as an urban campus spread across more than 40 office buildings. Amazon’s Seattle location page provides that broader context.
At the time, the proximity carried obvious meaning: Google Cloud was competing with AWS, whose headquarters were in the same city. But a cloud-versus-cloud framing leaves out the Android, Maps, Chrome and other teams expected to work there. The more complete story is that two major technology employers were neighbors in a dense Seattle district, while the Google building served a range of engineering work.

GeekWire reported a small, playful welcome from across the street: Amazon employees placed sticky notes on the windows of the Fiona building to spell “Hi, G!” It was a reported gesture by employees, not evidence of an official corporate campaign.
A growing Puget Sound engineering center
The opening came amid a much larger Google expansion across the Seattle region. GeekWire reported in October 2019 that Google had more than 4,500 regional employees and nearly 150 local job openings. Its Seattle-area real-estate footprint was then nearly 2 million square feet, spanning several cities. Google had also completed a purchase of roughly 400,000 square feet across two buildings at Kirkland Urban, on the Eastside.
The report described the Seattle region as Google’s second-largest engineering center outside the Bay Area. It also placed the opening in the context of a company-wide plan Google announced in 2019 to spend $13 billion on U.S. offices and data centers. These are historical figures and plans reported at the time; they should not be mistaken for current headcount, vacancies, square footage or investment.

An urban development with everyday trade-offs
The development, designed by Vulcan, was planned as a mixed-use part of South Lake Union, with office space alongside ground-level retail and housing. That setting differs from a self-contained suburban office park: employees were working in a district with other employers and city uses close by. The same density, however, came with practical friction. The 2019 report said underground parking was insufficient for all workers and described heavy rush-hour congestion in the area; employees were encouraged to consider alternatives to driving.
The site lead also mentioned employees using paddleboards or kayaks across Lake Union. That was an anecdotal example, not a standard commute or a transportation recommendation. The report’s more useful takeaway is the tension between urban access and crowded streets and limited parking—not that watercraft offered a routine solution.

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee attended the opening. Google also announced a $1 million Google.org grant to the William Booth Center, a Seattle Salvation Army shelter focused on veterans. Separately, Google said its activities had generated $18.6 billion in activity for Washington businesses, website publishers and nonprofits. That number is Google’s own reported economic-impact figure, not an independently audited estimate established by the article.
The campus project also had a tragic history before opening. A construction crane collapsed at the site in April 2019, killing four people. GeekWire reported that the project’s site lead offered condolences and said the incident had not changed the opening timeline. That opening-day account does not establish responsibility, cause or any regulatory findings, and none should be inferred from it.

The campus was simultaneously a major Google engineering expansion, a conspicuous neighbor to Amazon and AWS, and a workplace-design showcase inside a mixed-use Seattle district. Its amenities and branding made for vivid first-look details; its traffic and parking constraints gave a less polished view of daily logistics. And although the Amazon proximity sharpened the competitive symbolism, the campus’s wider team mix shows why it was more than a Google Cloud outpost.
Because the story is rooted in an October 2019 opening, it is best understood as a historical snapshot. The source does not verify what the campus’s occupancy, staffing or working arrangements are today.
