Ilya Sutskever’s new AI startup is Safe Superintelligence Inc. (SSI), a research company he announced on June 19, 2024, after leaving OpenAI. It is not a chatbot, consumer app, or publicly available AI service. SSI says its single goal is to develop “safe superintelligence”—a future AI system whose capabilities broadly exceed those of humans while remaining controllable and safe.
The company’s most important public update is a July 27, 2026 partnership with NVIDIA. NVIDIA said it invested in SSI and will provide access to its next-generation Vera Rubin computing platform. SSI says the arrangement will increase its computing capacity by an order of magnitude. However, as of August 18, 2026, SSI has not publicly released a model, benchmark, technical paper, product, or detailed safety case.
What did Ilya Sutskever launch?
Safe Superintelligence Inc., commonly called SSI, is a privately held AI research startup founded by Sutskever, Daniel Gross, and Daniel Levy. Its stated objective is deliberately narrow: build safe superintelligence.

SSI has described its approach as “one product”—safe superintelligence—and says it wants to avoid the short-term product cycles, commercial distractions, and management overhead associated with ordinary technology companies. That means the company is not publicly pursuing a chatbot, search engine, API, enterprise software suite, or other conventional AI product.

SSI’s official website describes it as an American lab with offices in Palo Alto and Tel Aviv. Its public presence has largely consisted of a mission statement and recruiting material rather than technical disclosures.
SSI’s stated mission is a company position, not independent evidence that it has solved any part of the superintelligence-safety problem.
Why did Sutskever leave OpenAI?
Sutskever left OpenAI in May 2024 after serving as its chief scientist and co-founding the organization. His departure followed the company’s November 2023 governance crisis, when he was involved in the board’s temporary removal of Sam Altman as CEO.
Public reporting has connected his departure with disagreements about OpenAI’s direction, safety priorities, and governance. But Sutskever has not provided a complete public account establishing one definitive reason for leaving. It would therefore be too strong to say that he left simply because OpenAI “abandoned safety.” That is an interpretation, not a settled fact.
At OpenAI, Sutskever was associated with major deep-learning research and co-led the Superalignment team announced in 2023. He was also among the contributors to collaborative OpenAI work connected with modern language models. He should not be described as the sole creator of ChatGPT or GPT-4.
Relevant background includes OpenAI’s Superalignment announcement and the GPT-4 technical report.
Who founded SSI?
Ilya Sutskever
Sutskever is an OpenAI co-founder, former chief scientist, and prominent deep-learning researcher. His earlier work is associated with foundational advances including AlexNet and sequence-to-sequence learning. Those achievements give SSI substantial technical credibility, but they do not prove that its new research direction will succeed.

Daniel Gross
Gross is a technology entrepreneur, investor, and former AI executive at Apple. Early coverage identified him as an important business and fundraising figure at SSI. Later reporting said he left the CEO role in 2025.
Daniel Levy
Levy is a former OpenAI researcher and technical collaborator. SSI’s founding materials identify him as a co-founder, while NVIDIA’s 2026 announcement lists Sutskever and Levy among the company’s current leaders.
That distinction matters: founding status and current operating roles are not necessarily the same. NVIDIA’s announcement identifies Sutskever as SSI’s co-founder and CEO, consistent with reporting that he took over the CEO role after Gross’s departure.
What does “safe superintelligence” mean?
A superintelligence generally means a future AI system with intellectual abilities substantially exceeding those of humans across a broad range of domains. SSI’s stated ambition is to develop such a system while keeping safety ahead of capability growth.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe company says it intends to pursue capability and safety as linked technical problems. It wants to advance capabilities rapidly while ensuring that safety methods keep pace as systems become more powerful.
That philosophy is different from a claim that SSI plans to slow AI development. Its stated position is closer to: build highly capable systems, but make safety progress at least as fast as capability progress.
The unresolved question is how SSI will define and measure “safe.” The company has not publicly explained its safety metrics, evaluation thresholds, deployment rules, independent oversight, or release policy. No public evidence currently shows that it has achieved safe superintelligence.

What is NVIDIA providing?
On July 27, 2026, SSI and NVIDIA announced a long-term strategic partnership. NVIDIA said it had invested in SSI and would provide access to its next-generation Vera Rubin computing platform.
SSI said the partnership would increase its compute capacity by an order of magnitude. The companies also said they would collaborate on the technical advancement of NVIDIA’s current and future computing platforms.
This is more than a conventional venture-financing announcement. For a frontier AI research company, access to large-scale computing can determine which experiments are practical, how quickly models can be trained, and how much research can be conducted in parallel.
But several important financial and technical details remain undisclosed:
- The amount of NVIDIA’s investment.
- NVIDIA’s ownership stake, if any specific stake was agreed.
- The exact quantity and configuration of computing capacity.
- Whether “order of magnitude” means ten times SSI’s previous capacity, and over what period.
- SSI’s model architecture, training results, and research milestones.
- A product, release date, or public deployment plan.
NVIDIA said SSI had research “worthy of scaling up.” That is a statement from a strategic partner, not an independent benchmark, peer-reviewed result, or public demonstration of a breakthrough. The official announcement also does not establish a reported $5 billion NVIDIA cash investment.

How much money has SSI raised?
SSI has attracted billions of dollars in reported financing, although it has not published a complete capitalization table or detailed financial history on its website.

In September 2024, reporting said SSI had raised more than $1 billion at an approximately $5 billion valuation. Reported investors included NFDG, associated with Nat Friedman and Daniel Gross, along with Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia Capital, DST Global, and SV Angel.
In April 2025, further reporting said SSI had raised another $2 billion at a reported valuation of roughly $32 billion. That figure should be understood as a reported private-market valuation, not an audited company value or proof of revenue.

These financial concepts are different:
- Capital raised: money investors reportedly committed to the company.
- Private valuation: an implied value based on the terms of a financing transaction.
- Revenue: money earned from customers, for which SSI has disclosed no public product business.
- Compute access: infrastructure or capacity used for research, which is not automatically equivalent to cash financing.
- Technical progress: measurable research results, which have not yet been publicly demonstrated by SSI.
For readers assessing the financial significance of the company, a multibillion-dollar valuation primarily reflects investor expectations about future technological and commercial potential. It is not the same as proven sales, profitability, or a validated AI breakthrough.
See TechCrunch’s 2024 financing report, its 2025 valuation report, and Axios’s coverage.
Has SSI released an AI model or product?
Not publicly, based on the available record through August 18, 2026.
SSI has not publicly identified a released model, consumer product, public API, technical paper, benchmark, detailed demonstration, or independently testable safety case. The NVIDIA announcement says the company spent two years quietly advancing a research direction, but it does not name a model or publish evaluation results.
The most accurate distinction is:
- Publicly confirmed: SSI’s formation, founders, mission, offices, reported financing, current CEO description, and NVIDIA partnership.
- Not publicly demonstrated: safe superintelligence, a specific breakthrough model, a product, measurable benchmark leadership, or a validated safety method.
That secrecy may help SSI protect long-term research and avoid commercial pressure. It also prevents outsiders, investors, policymakers, and researchers from independently assessing whether the company’s safety claims are meaningful.

Why SSI matters—and what could go wrong
Why the strategy is significant
- Technical credibility: Sutskever is one of the most prominent researchers associated with modern deep learning and large language models.
- A different company model: SSI is explicitly positioning itself around a long-term research endpoint rather than a sequence of commercial products.
- Capital intensity: Reported financing and NVIDIA’s infrastructure commitment show that investors are willing to fund a pre-product frontier AI project.
- Infrastructure access: Vera Rubin access and the claimed tenfold compute increase could materially expand the company’s ability to run large experiments.
The central trade-offs
Safety mission versus secrecy. A private research environment may protect sensitive work, but secrecy makes external accountability difficult.
Long-term research versus governance. Fewer commercial distractions may help a lab focus. At the same time, a company with no public model or detailed governance commitments gives outsiders little ability to evaluate its decisions.
Safety and capability pursued together. SSI says it wants to move quickly on capabilities while keeping safety ahead. That creates a demanding technical and governance problem: the methods intended to control increasingly powerful systems must work before those systems become more difficult to evaluate or contain.

Valuation versus evidence. A high private valuation measures investor confidence at a particular financing point. It does not establish revenue, technical success, or safety.

What to watch next
The most meaningful evidence of progress will not be another valuation headline. It will be concrete disclosure, including:
- A public model, paper, or technical report.
- Independent safety evaluations and clearly defined safety metrics.
- Evidence that increased computing capacity produces measurable research results.
- A release policy explaining when and how SSI would deploy a powerful system.
- More information about governance, investor rights, and the relationship between NVIDIA’s investment and compute access.
- A clear explanation of how SSI distinguishes genuine superintelligence from a highly capable but narrower AI system.
Until then, SSI is best understood as a heavily funded, highly secretive research bet led by a major AI researcher—not as a launched consumer AI competitor and not as a company that has publicly demonstrated safe superintelligence.
