Workers at Microsoft-owned id Software formed a 165-person, wall-to-wall union with the Communications Workers of America (CWA), and Microsoft recognized it. The unit includes developers, artists, programmers and other staff in Richardson, Texas—not only quality-assurance workers. Recognition establishes a union representative; it does not mean the workers already have a contract or guaranteed changes to pay, remote work or job security.
What happened at id Software?
A strong majority of id Software workers supported union representation, according to CWA’s announcement. The 165-person unit will join CWA Local 6215 in Richardson, Texas. CWA says workers showed support through authorization cards or an online portal; the announcement does not describe a conventional National Labor Relations Board election or give a complete vote tally.
Microsoft recognized the union under its stated labor principles. The announcement identifies the employees in the Texas unit; it does not establish that every id Software worker worldwide, every ZeniMax employee or all Microsoft game-industry workers are covered.

A wall-to-wall unit brings employees across job categories into the same bargaining unit. CWA describes id Software’s unit as covering developers, artists, programmers and other workers. That is broader than a unit limited to quality-assurance (QA) testing, but it does not mean all jobs at Microsoft or ZeniMax are represented by this union.
#1 Best Overall
The earlier ZeniMax QA unit covered quality-assurance employees across U.S. ZeniMax studios, according to CWA’s announcement about that organizing effort. The id Software unit’s significance is therefore not just its size: it brings a range of core game-development roles into a single union.
What issues did id workers say they wanted to address?
Organizing committee members cited concerns and goals including unilateral workplace changes, job security, health benefits, worker input, accessibility and remote-work policy. They described remote work as important for health, family responsibilities and access needs. These are the workers’ stated reasons for organizing, not proof that the union has secured any of those protections.

A union can give employees a collective voice in negotiations over workplace matters, but the actual terms depend on bargaining and any contract the parties reach. Unionization alone does not guarantee raises, continued remote work, protection from every layoff or a veto over management decisions.

How recognition differs from a contract
Recognition means the employer acknowledges the union as the representative of the bargaining unit. It is distinct from the other steps that may follow:
Rank #3
- Neutrality: An employer commits not to campaign against workers’ organizing efforts. CWA’s account of the earlier ZeniMax QA agreement says Microsoft agreed to remain neutral and let workers decide whether to join.
- Recognition: The employer acknowledges the union as representative of the covered workers. Microsoft recognized id Software’s union, according to CWA.
- Collective bargaining: The employer and union negotiate over contract terms. CWA’s id announcement said the workers expected to negotiate with Microsoft for a contract.
- Ratification: If the parties reach a tentative agreement, covered workers vote on whether to approve it.
The id announcement is not evidence of a completed contract. Later CWA statements describe bargaining disputes across Xbox and ZeniMax operations. Separately, the NLRB docket for Case 16-CA-390759 lists allegations including refusal to bargain in good faith, refusal to provide information, unilateral changes and coercive actions. The case was filed on July 15, 2026 and remains open; the listed allegations are not adjudicated findings.
Where id fits in Microsoft’s game-studio union timeline
Id Software was not the first Microsoft game group to unionize, nor the first Microsoft studio to form a wall-to-wall union. The sequence shows how organizing expanded from QA into broader studio roles:
Rank #4
| Group | What CWA reported |
|---|---|
| ZeniMax QA | CWA says the group secured union representation on January 3, 2023, becoming the first unionized group at Microsoft. |
| Bethesda Game Studios | CWA reported that 241 workers formed a wall-to-wall union, described as the first wall-to-wall union at a Microsoft video-game studio. CWA’s Bethesda announcement lists roles including artists, engineers, programmers and designers. |
| id Software | CWA reported that 165 workers in Richardson formed a wall-to-wall union representing developers, artists, programmers and other staff. |
| Double Fine | Double Fine was reported as unionizing in May 2026. PC Gamer’s report means id is not the latest Microsoft game team to unionize as of August 18, 2026. |
“Latest” was accurate only as a description of id Software at the time of its announcement. It is no longer a current description as of August 18, 2026.

Recognition creates a formal representative for the covered workers and a path to bargaining. Depending on the unit and bargaining status, negotiations can address subjects such as pay, benefits, job classifications, scheduling, remote work, transfers and severance. The sources cited here do not establish the precise legal scope of bargaining for id’s unit or the terms of any eventual agreement.
Best Value
- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
- It does not guarantee a raise: Wages would need to be negotiated and included in an agreement.
- It does not guarantee lifetime employment or prevent every layoff: Union representation may affect how employment decisions are handled, but it is not immunity from job loss.
- It does not automatically settle workplace policies: Remote work and other issues remain matters for bargaining unless and until agreed terms say otherwise.
- It does not mean a strike is underway: The cited sources do not establish an id strike authorization or strike.
- It does not establish a development or release impact: No cited source verifies a specific effect on a Doom or Quake project or schedule.
How later layoffs and labor disputes fit the story
Later events provide context for the difference between recognition and outcomes, but they should not be confused with the original organizing announcement. CWA said subsequent layoffs affected id Software, Bethesda Game Studios and ZeniMax Online Studios, and criticized Microsoft’s handling of bargaining. Those are the union’s statements about later events; they do not show that unionization caused or prevented layoffs.
Windows Central reported that 136 id workers—96 in Texas and 40 remote workers—were laid off in July 2026, and reported id Software’s statement that its remaining team was roughly the size it had been during development of Doom (2016) and would continue making games and technology. These figures and the company statement are secondary reporting; they should not be mistaken for the terms or outcome of the union’s bargaining. CWA’s later account of the wider Xbox layoffs is available in its statement on union workers’ response.
