Humane did not sell HP a functioning AI Pin business. On February 18, 2025, HP announced a $116 million deal for selected Humane assets, including its CosmOS platform, technical talent, and intellectual property covering more than 300 patents and patent applications. Humane wound down the consumer product separately.
Ai Pin sales ended immediately, and Humane shut down the servers that powered the device at 12:00 p.m. Pacific time on February 28, 2025. That ended calling, messaging, cellular data, AI queries and responses, cloud access, and .Center access. Limited offline functions remained, but the product’s defining experience was gone.
What happened to Humane’s Ai Pin?
The sequence matters:
- Humane announced that it was winding down the consumer Ai Pin business.
- HP announced a definitive $116 million agreement to acquire selected Humane AI capabilities.
- Humane stopped selling Ai Pins immediately.
- The company shut down the servers required for the product’s core features 10 days later.
- HP took on selected technology, intellectual property, and employees—not an ongoing consumer Ai Pin product line.
Calling this an “acquisition of Humane” is acceptable shorthand, but it can be misleading. HP’s announcement described a purchase of key AI capabilities, while the consumer hardware business was being wound down.
What the Ai Pin was supposed to do
Launched in April 2024 after extensive publicity and more than $230 million in reported venture funding, the Ai Pin was a screenless wearable intended to reduce reliance on a smartphone. It combined voice interaction, a camera, projection-based controls, cellular connectivity, and cloud AI services.

Humane presented it as a new type of personal computer. Its advertised use cases included asking questions, sending messages, taking photos, translating, identifying objects, and retrieving information. In practice, the device’s usefulness depended heavily on remote services, and many everyday tasks were easier on a phone or smartwatch.
What HP bought for $116 million
HP said the transaction included:
- CosmOS: Humane’s AI software platform.
- Technical talent: Engineers, architects, and product innovators.
- Intellectual property: More than 300 patents and patent applications.
- AI development opportunities: Potential integration into HP AI PCs, smart printers, and connected conference-room products.
HP said the acquired team would form HP IQ, an AI innovation lab inside HP. HP’s fiscal 2025 reporting later described the acquisition as completed and HP IQ as formed.
That does not establish that CosmOS was integrated into a shipping HP product, that HP created an Ai Pin successor, or that the transaction produced measurable consumer benefits. Those were strategic possibilities described by HP, not demonstrated outcomes in the acquisition announcement.

Service cutoff
At noon Pacific time on February 28, 2025, Ai Pins stopped connecting to Humane’s servers. Humane said the following services would end:
- Calling and messaging
- Cellular connectivity and mobile data
- AI queries and responses
- Cloud access
- .Center access
Some limited offline functions, such as checking the battery level, remained. Therefore, “bricked” is a useful shorthand for the loss of the product’s main experience but is technically imprecise if it suggests that every circuit and offline function stopped working. More precisely, Humane shut down the cloud services on which the Ai Pin depended.
Data deletion
Humane instructed owners to synchronize their devices over Wi-Fi and download photos, videos, and notes before the shutdown. It said remaining customer data—including personally identifiable information stored on its servers—would be permanently deleted after the deadline. Once that deletion occurred, owners could not rely on the device or service as a way to recover their files.
Humane’s customer update and consumer FAQ documented the shutdown and data-export process.

Refunds were not automatically available to every owner. Humane’s stated policy covered Ai Pins shipped on or after November 15, 2024, corresponding to its 90-day return window. Refund requests had to be submitted by February 27, 2025.
Under the same FAQ:
- Orders that had not completed onboarding were to be canceled and fully refunded.
- Customers waiting for a replacement Charge Case were to receive a refund for the portion of the purchase price allocated to that case instead of receiving a replacement.
- Humane would no longer provide planned Charge Case replacements.
- Subscriptions were canceled and were not transferred to another device.
Owners whose devices shipped before November 15 were outside the stated 90-day eligibility threshold. Secondary coverage criticized the limited refund policy, but “everyone received no refund” is not accurate; eligibility depended on shipment date and order status.
What owners could do with the hardware
Humane encouraged owners to recycle the Ai Pin through an electronics-recycling program. Recycling does not guarantee recovery of the purchase price, nor did Humane provide an officially supported path for repurposing the device with another software provider.
Why the Ai Pin failed
The shutdown was not simply the result of unfavorable reviews. Several problems reinforced one another.
Recommended Free Tools
1. Its value depended on a remote service
The Ai Pin was expensive hardware whose core functions required Humane to operate servers, accounts, connectivity, and AI infrastructure. When the company ended that service, ownership of the physical device did not preserve the product’s main capabilities.

2. The total cost was difficult to justify
The Ai Pin launched at approximately $699, later fell to about $499, and also required a recurring service plan. That made the product difficult to justify against smartphones, smartwatches, and other devices that already offered mature communication and AI features.
3. It did not replace a phone
The Ai Pin was designed to reduce dependence on smartphones, but it did not provide a comparable app ecosystem or broad functionality. Users could still need a phone for many ordinary tasks, creating the worst of both worlds: the cost of an additional device without the convenience of a full replacement.
4. Reviews raised practical concerns
Reviews and reporting cited slow response times, heat, limited battery life, interface limitations, and inconsistent AI results. A product can survive flaws in any one of these areas, but the combination made the device feel less useful than the alternatives.
5. The hardware created additional risk
Humane previously warned customers to stop using its Charge Case because of a battery-related fire risk. The warning and the subsequent decision not to provide planned replacement cases added to customer dissatisfaction.
6. Demand appeared weak
Tech reporting described returns at one point outpacing sales, while other reports cited limited orders. These were reported indicators rather than an independently audited Humane financial metric, but they point to the central commercial problem: the product did not generate durable demand at its price.
From more than $230 million in funding to a $116 million asset deal
TechCrunch reported that Humane had raised more than $230 million; other coverage has cited a figure of roughly $240 million. The precise total varies by source, but the broad comparison is clear: the $116 million transaction was below the company’s reported cumulative funding.

That comparison should not be treated as a simple valuation calculation. Venture funding is capital invested over time, while an acquisition price reflects what a buyer is willing to pay for specific assets, people, intellectual property, liabilities, and future opportunities at a particular moment. HP was not paying $116 million for a healthy, continuing hardware business with an active customer base.

Reporting also said HP offered positions to some Humane employees while others were laid off. TechCrunch reported that some offers included salary increases, stock, and bonuses. Those employment details were not included in HP’s public acquisition announcement and should be understood as reported terms, not universal treatment of every employee.
Why HP might still have wanted the technology
Humane’s consumer product failed to establish a sustainable market, but that does not mean every underlying asset had no value. HP’s stated rationale was to accelerate software-led AI experiences across its existing hardware ecosystem.
For HP, the potential value included:
- Software for coordinating AI across local devices and cloud services
- Patents and patent applications relevant to AI interfaces and hardware
- Employees with experience building an AI-first product
- Technology that might be adapted to PCs, printers, and workplace systems
- Lessons from designing a voice- and camera-driven interface without a conventional screen
HP said it wanted to use the technology in AI PCs, smart printers, and connected conference rooms. That was an announced direction, not proof that those integrations had shipped or succeeded.
The personal-finance lesson: hardware can be a subscription risk
The Ai Pin illustrates a form of vendor lock-in at the device level. With ordinary hardware, a company’s failure may end warranties or updates but leave a reasonably useful product. With cloud-dependent hardware, the company can also remove the main reason the product works at all.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Before buying an expensive connected device from a startup, ask:
- Does it perform useful functions offline? If the servers disappear, what remains?
- Is there a mandatory subscription? Include the plan in the real ownership cost.
- Can data be exported locally? Check whether photos, recordings, notes, and account data can be downloaded in ordinary formats.
- Is there a support-life commitment? A startup’s intentions are not the same as a contractual service period.
- Can another provider operate it? Proprietary hardware with no documented alternative software path carries more shutdown risk.
- What is the recovery plan? Understand the return window, warranty, battery policy, and recycling process before purchase.
This does not mean every connected product is a bad purchase. It means buyers should price the possibility that the service—and therefore much of the product’s value—may not last as long as the hardware.
The bottom line
Humane’s Ai Pin was effectively disabled because its core experience depended on Humane’s servers, while HP purchased the parts of the company it considered strategically valuable: CosmOS, intellectual property, and selected talent. The deal preserved potential AI technology inside HP, not the consumer product owners had bought.
