Huawei did not set an all-time company revenue record in 2024. It reported CNY862.072 billion in revenue—up 22.4% from 2023 and its second-highest annual figure in the company’s disclosed five-year table, but still below the CNY891.368 billion reported for 2020.
The approximately 45 million to 46 million phones often cited in coverage refers to estimated Huawei smartphone shipments in mainland China, not audited worldwide sales. Those shipments helped revive Huawei’s consumer business, but smartphones were only one part of a much broader revenue rebound.
The numbers behind Huawei’s 2024 rebound
Huawei released its 2024 annual report on March 31, 2025. The report showed a sharp recovery in revenue, but a weaker profit result:

At Huawei’s reported year-end exchange rate of USD1 to CNY7.2957, the company’s 2024 revenue was approximately US$118.2 billion. The figures come from Huawei’s 2024 annual report.

The important distinction is between a revenue rebound and a record. Huawei’s 2024 revenue was below its 2020 result, so “near-record,” “second-highest in the disclosed five-year period,” or simply “a major revenue recovery” is more accurate than “record revenue.”
What the 45-million-phone figure actually measures
The phone figure is not a line item in Huawei’s audited financial statements. It comes from third-party smartphone market estimates, particularly Canalys-related reporting cited by Caixin Global and Economic Observer.
Those estimates indicate that Huawei shipped approximately 46 million smartphones in mainland China during calendar year 2024. Some coverage rounds that number to 45 million. The figure should therefore be read with four qualifications:

- Shipments, not necessarily sell-through: shipments generally measure devices entering distribution channels, not phones activated or purchased by final customers.
- Third-party estimate: Huawei does not disclose smartphone units as a separate audited revenue category.
- Rounded precision: “about 46 million” best reflects the public Canalys-related estimate.
Canalys-related reporting placed Huawei second in China for the full year, with roughly 16% share and year-over-year shipment growth of about 37%. IDC-related figures similarly put Huawei’s annual share at approximately 16.6%. The exact percentage varies by research firm and methodology.
Huawei’s annual and quarterly rankings are not the same
Huawei’s position also depends on the period being measured. Full-year estimates generally placed it second in China. Counterpoint reported that Huawei reached approximately 18.1% share in the fourth quarter of 2024, ranking first for that quarter.

These statements are not necessarily contradictory. Research firms can differ in their treatment of distribution channels, shipment definitions, market coverage, reporting dates, and sell-through versus shipments. A precise article should say which firm and period it is describing rather than declaring that Huawei was simply “China’s No. 1 smartphone brand in 2024.”
Which phones supported the comeback?
Huawei’s smartphone recovery followed a high-end product cycle that renewed attention to the brand in China:

These products help explain the smartphone recovery, but they do not prove that phones alone caused the company’s revenue increase. Huawei’s consumer segment includes tablets, wearables, audio products, laptops and other devices as well as smartphones.
Consumer growth mattered, but phones were not the whole business
Huawei’s Consumer business generated CNY339.006 billion in 2024, up 38.3% year over year. That is a substantial improvement and consistent with a strong device recovery. It is not, however, a smartphone revenue figure.

The automotive-solutions percentage is particularly large because it was growing from a much smaller base. Taken together, the figures show why it is misleading to attribute Huawei’s total revenue directly to 45 million phones. The company is a diversified technology group whose products and services span communications infrastructure, cloud services, energy systems, vehicles and consumer electronics.
How sanctions shaped the recovery
U.S. restrictions limited Huawei’s access to certain advanced chips, software and supply-chain partners. The restrictions also made it harder for Huawei to compete globally on the same terms as smartphone manufacturers with broad access to international components and software ecosystems.
Huawei responded by increasing its reliance on its own HarmonyOS ecosystem and domestic technology and manufacturing relationships. Its premium phone recovery shows that the company was able to rebuild meaningful demand in China despite those constraints.
That is not the same as saying sanctions have been overcome. The available evidence demonstrates domestic resilience, not a return to Huawei’s former global smartphone scale. Availability, chip capability, software support and carrier compatibility remain highly market-specific. A phone’s success in mainland China does not automatically translate to the United States, Europe or other international markets.
Why did profit fall while revenue rose?
The revenue increase was accompanied by a substantial decline in reported net profit, from CNY86.950 billion in 2023 to CNY62.574 billion in 2024.

One likely explanation is the cost of investing across several strategic areas at once. Huawei reported CNY179.7 billion in research and development spending, equal to 20.8% of revenue. That investment supports semiconductor capabilities, operating systems, cloud computing, automotive technology and consumer devices, among other activities.
Business mix and margins also matter. Revenue growth does not guarantee that every additional yuan produces the same profit as before. A company can sell more products and services while spending heavily to develop new technology, expand supply chains, enter new markets or support lower-margin businesses.
The result is therefore more complicated than a simple success story: Huawei grew revenue sharply, but the bottom line weakened. For investors, suppliers and competitors, both figures matter.

Huawei’s rebound occurred during a broader smartphone-market recovery. IDC reported that worldwide smartphone shipments rose 6.4% in 2024, while Counterpoint reported global smartphone sell-through growth of 4%. China’s smartphone market also improved after two years of decline.

This context does not erase Huawei’s gains. Its estimated China shipment growth was much stronger than the overall global market. But it does mean that the company’s performance should not be attributed entirely to one product launch or to its response to sanctions. Improving market conditions, replacement demand, premium-device interest and Huawei’s own product cycle all contributed to the environment.

What the 2024 results do—and do not—prove
The evidence supports several conclusions:
- Huawei had a major revenue recovery in 2024.
- Its Consumer business grew faster than the company overall.
- Huawei’s smartphone shipments in mainland China reached approximately 46 million, according to third-party estimates.
- The company regained significant premium-market momentum in China.
- Revenue growth came from a diversified business, not smartphones alone.
- Profit declined despite higher revenue, partly reflecting heavy investment and business-mix pressures.
It does not prove that Huawei sold 45 million phones worldwide, that smartphone revenue equaled Consumer business revenue, or that Huawei fully returned to global smartphone leadership.
What to watch next
The key question is whether Huawei can turn a strong China-market product cycle into durable, profitable growth. That depends on several factors:
- Whether demand for Mate, Pura and foldable devices remains strong after the initial launch cycles.
- Whether Huawei can improve software and application support for users outside China.
- Whether supply-chain constraints limit production or raise costs.
- Whether automotive, digital-power, cloud and ICT businesses can scale alongside smartphones.
- Whether high research and development spending eventually produces stronger margins.
For consumers, geography remains crucial. Huawei phones may differ significantly by country in official availability, warranty coverage, cellular-band compatibility, software support and access to applications such as Google Mobile Services. A device that is compelling in China may not be a practical substitute for an iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel or another Android phone in a market where Huawei’s services and carrier support are limited.

Bottom line
Huawei’s 2024 performance was a significant recovery, but the headline needs correction. The company reported near-record total revenue of CNY862.072 billion, not an all-time record; 2020 was higher. The approximately 45 million to 46 million phone figure refers to estimated shipments in mainland China, not verified worldwide sales. Smartphones helped lift Huawei’s Consumer business, but the broader rebound also came from ICT infrastructure, digital power, cloud computing and automotive solutions. The strongest defensible description is a major China smartphone comeback and a near-record year for Huawei—not record global revenue caused by 45 million phones.
