Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) appointed Phil Mottram as its Executive Vice President and Chief Sales Officer on September 16, 2025. The appointment became effective November 1, 2025, putting him in charge of worldwide sales for HPE’s Servers and Hybrid Cloud solutions, as well as its channel and partner ecosystem. He succeeded Heiko Meyer, who planned to retire in March 2026 after 38 years with HP and HPE.

HPE’s current leadership biography still lists Mottram in the role, confirming that this was an implemented succession rather than a proposal.

What HPE actually announced

“Global sales chief” is a shorthand description. Mottram’s formal corporate title is Executive Vice President and Chief Sales Officer. HPE said he would lead global sales covering:

The announcement date and the start date are different: HPE announced the change on September 16, 2025, and specified November 1, 2025, as the effective date. The company’s official announcement is the primary source for those details.

The sales role does not make Mottram HPE’s chief executive, president or head of every business operation. Product and business-unit leaders continue to own their respective portfolios; Mottram’s authority is centered on worldwide commercial execution and partner routes to market.

Who is Phil Mottram?

Mottram joined HPE in 2019 and has more than 30 years of experience in technology and telecommunications. His career has included work in Europe, the United States and Asia-Pacific. HPE lists a Bachelor of Arts in Business Information Systems from the University of Lincoln in the United Kingdom.

  1. Senior leadership roles after joining HPE in 2019.
  2. Four years as Executive Vice President and General Manager of HPE Aruba Networking.
  3. Executive Vice President of Growth Markets.
  4. Executive Vice President and Chief Sales Officer, effective November 1, 2025.

HPE identifies his earlier employers as AT&T, Sprint, BT, Telstra, CSL, Vodafone and Zayo. Historical HPE filings provide additional context, including roles described as CEO of Hong Kong CSL, executive director of global sales at Telstra International, Vodafone enterprise-business leadership and chief revenue officer at Zayo. Those records describe previous positions, not his current HPE title.

Why HPE selected an internal successor

HPE CEO Antonio Neri said Mottram’s customer focus, collaborative leadership style, global perspective and record of driving growth made him a strong fit. HPE also pointed to his familiarity with networking and the company’s broader portfolio.

Those are management’s stated reasons, not independent proof that Mottram will increase revenue or improve partner economics. HPE described Mottram’s Aruba tenure as producing record revenue growth and profitability; that claim should be understood as a company assertion unless supported by separately audited or reported metrics.

The internal promotion gives HPE continuity: Mottram already knows its sales organization, networking business and partner relationships. The trade-off is that an internal appointment may bring less outside disruption or fresh perspective than hiring an external sales executive.

What happened to Heiko Meyer?

Meyer led HPE Global Sales before Mottram. HPE said Meyer decided to retire in March 2026 after 38 years with HP and HPE. Neri credited him with leading what HPE called its largest sales transformation and with changing the go-to-market model to connect customers more directly with HPE solutions.

The timetable indicates a planned succession, not a dismissal or an emergency response to poor performance. Meyer’s retirement date also explains why Mottram could take over in November while the outgoing leader remained associated with the business for a transition period.

Why channel partners should pay attention

Because the remit explicitly includes HPE’s channel and partner ecosystem, Mottram is now a central executive for the commercial strategy affecting:

  • Resellers and distributors
  • Managed-service providers and systems integrators
  • Cloud and infrastructure partners
  • Networking partners
  • Organizations selling HPE compute, hybrid-cloud, AI and networking offerings

The appointment alone does not establish changes to rebates, margins, deal registration, incentives, partner tiers, conflict rules or routes to market. Partners should look for those items in later program documents, event announcements and formal HPE communications rather than infer them from the leadership change.

Strategic context: one sales organization for a broad portfolio

HPE is asking one global sales leader to connect a portfolio spanning servers, hybrid cloud, networking and AI. Mottram’s background is especially relevant to networking through his Aruba tenure, while his Growth Markets assignment adds experience in geographic expansion and regional execution.

  • Hard Drive: 4TB (4 x 1TB) SATA III 6Gb/s SSD for Ultra Fast Storage

In public comments after taking the role, Mottram highlighted networking, cloud, AI, customers, partners and pan-HPE innovation. Those comments are directional signals from Mottram and HPE, not a formal promise of a particular product launch, sales reorganization or financial result.

HPE investor material also described Mottram’s earlier work in strategic emerging geographies during a networking transition after the Juniper Networks acquisition. That background can help explain his experience, but the available evidence does not show that the Juniper transaction caused his appointment.

What to watch after the appointment

For partners, buyers and investors, the meaningful evidence will come from operational follow-through:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Partner-program changes: new incentives, tier rules, rebates or deal-registration policies.
  • Sales coverage: changes to regional teams, specialist overlays or account ownership.
  • Portfolio bundling: evidence that networking, compute, AI and hybrid-cloud offers are being sold together more effectively.
  • Regional strategy: specific investments or restructuring in growth markets.
  • Financial results: reported sales performance after Mottram’s effective date, interpreted with the usual effects of demand, currency, acquisitions and market conditions.
  • Partner feedback: commentary at HPE events or in formal partner communications about execution and ease of doing business.

What this means for buyers

Enterprise customers should not treat a leadership appointment as evidence that an HPE product is superior, cheaper or better suited to a particular workload. HPE GreenLake, HPE Compute, HPE Networking and AI infrastructure remain configuration-, contract-, geography- and partner-dependent purchases. Pricing and service terms must be confirmed through current HPE or authorized-partner documentation.

The news is most relevant when an organization is evaluating HPE’s wider platform approach or deciding how closely to work with its partner ecosystem. It is less relevant to a consumer purchase, a purely public-cloud-native requirement or a buyer seeking transparent list pricing.

The Bottom Line

Mottram’s appointment is an internal, planned succession that gives HPE’s global sales organization a leader with networking, telecommunications and growth-market experience. It puts him at the center of HPE’s commercial approach to servers, hybrid cloud, AI, networking and partners—but it does not, by itself, prove a strategic pivot or any change in partner economics. Those conclusions require evidence from subsequent programs, sales coverage and financial results.
