Verdict: The HP ZBook Ultra G1a is one of the most capable thin 14-inch Windows workstations available, thanks to AMD’s Ryzen AI Max PRO platform and its unusually large unified-memory pool. It can handle serious professional work, local-AI experiments and sensible 1080p/1200p gaming—but it is not a replacement for a high-end gaming laptop or a full-size workstation with a discrete NVIDIA GPU.
The buying decision depends heavily on configuration. The Ryzen AI Max PRO 390 with Radeon 8050S is already powerful; the Ryzen AI Max+ PRO 395 with Radeon 8060S and 128GB of memory is the specialist option for large datasets, demanding graphics and local AI.
Which ZBook Ultra G1a is this?
“ZBook Ultra G1a” describes a product family, not one fixed laptop. Reviews have tested substantially different machines:

HP’s product page lists configurations reaching 16 CPU cores, 128GB of unified LPDDR5x memory, up to 4TB of storage and as much as 96GB of memory assignable to graphics workloads. See the official ZBook Ultra specifications and configurator.
Why AMD’s unified memory matters
The ZBook Ultra does not use a conventional discrete GPU with its own separate VRAM. Ryzen AI Max PRO combines Zen 5 CPU cores, Radeon graphics and an NPU in one processor package, with the components sharing fast LPDDR5x memory.
This design has two important advantages. First, the Radeon GPU can be unusually powerful for an integrated solution. Second, a 128GB system can make a large amount of memory available to graphics or AI workloads. HP says up to 96GB can be allocated to the GPU, but that is unified system memory, not dedicated VRAM.
Recommended Free Tools
Shared memory does not automatically equal the performance of a discrete GPU. Bandwidth, drivers, power limits, software support and cooling still matter. The advantage is capacity and flexibility: large local models, 3D scenes or creative projects may fit when they would exceed the memory of a smaller discrete GPU.
Memory is soldered in the configurations documented by TechRadar, so capacity must be chosen at purchase. Do not buy 32GB or 64GB assuming a later RAM upgrade will solve the problem.

Workstation performance
HP positions the ZBook Ultra as an ISV-certified mobile workstation for architects, engineers, software developers, product designers and creative professionals. Certification can be valuable for supported application versions, drivers and business support, but it does not guarantee that every professional application will perform like it does on a larger workstation with a discrete NVIDIA professional GPU. Verify certification for your exact software, plug-ins and operating system.
In PCWorld’s testing, the Ryzen AI Max PRO 390 model performed strongly in Cinebench, HandBrake and PCMark, scoring 6,083 in PCMark. Laptop Mag’s faster Ryzen AI Max+ PRO 395 model recorded the following results:

Those figures belong to Laptop Mag’s 128GB/2TB/OLED review unit, not every ZBook Ultra. They show why this machine is attractive for compiling code, encoding video and handling demanding multitasking, but they do not establish performance in every CAD, simulation, rendering or editing application.
Graphics and gaming: surprisingly capable, with limits
The Radeon graphics are the ZBook Ultra’s defining feature. PCWorld’s Radeon 8050S model had 32 compute units and scored 4,343 in 3DMark Time Spy. It averaged 59 frames per second in Rise of the Tomb Raider. PCWorld described its graphics performance as roughly comparable to a laptop RTX 4060 in its testing context; that is not a universal equivalence because GPU wattage, drivers, resolution and game settings change the comparison.
Laptop Mag’s higher-end Radeon 8060S model produced stronger results:

For demanding games, use 1920×1200 or 1920×1080 rather than the OLED panel’s native 2880×1800 resolution. Performance also depends on power mode, drivers, memory allocation and thermal conditions. Ray tracing is not the machine’s target use case, and competitive players will generally prefer a higher-refresh gaming laptop with a discrete GPU.
The accurate description is therefore “a workstation that can game,” not “a gaming laptop with business styling.” It should not be compared casually with machines carrying RTX 4070-, RTX 4080- or RTX 5090-class discrete graphics.
Display choices: practical IPS or impressive OLED
Base-style configurations can use a 14-inch 1920×1200 anti-glare IPS-grade display rated at 400 nits and 100% sRGB. This is the sensible choice for office work, long documents, bright environments and better battery discipline. PCWorld found its panel sharp and color-capable, though less vivid than OLED alternatives.
Higher configurations can use a 2880×1800 OLED touchscreen. Laptop Mag measured its review unit at 368 nits, with 197.6% sRGB coverage and 139.9% DCI-P3 coverage in its testing methodology. OLED offers superior contrast and more striking color, but it can be glossy and may consume more power. Those measurements apply to that review unit, not every ZBook Ultra display.
Design, keyboard and ports
The ZBook Ultra has a restrained business design rather than gaming styling. PCWorld measured its unit at approximately 12.29×8.45×0.71 inches and 3.31 pounds; Laptop Mag listed its review unit at 3.4 pounds. That is portable for a workstation with this level of CPU and GPU capability.

- Processor Type: Ryzen AI Max+ PRO
- Processor Model: 395
- Processor Core: Hexadeca-core (16 Core)
The keyboard has a full-size feel and business-oriented layout. Connectivity documented by Laptop Mag includes two 40Gbps USB-C ports, another 10Gbps USB-C port, USB-A, HDMI 2.1, a headset jack and a security-lock slot. Exact port specifications can vary by configuration, so check the listing before ordering.
The reviewed configuration lacked a built-in SD-card reader. Photographers and video editors should budget for a USB-C reader or dock. That is a manageable omission, but it weakens the laptop’s appeal as a standalone media workstation.
Battery life, heat and sustained workloads
Battery results vary too much to quote one universal number. PCWorld’s 74.5Wh unit lasted just over 14 hours in a light 4K video-loop test, while Laptop Mag’s Ryzen AI Max+ PRO 395/OLED unit lasted 6 hours 46 minutes in its web-browsing test.
Those results are not directly comparable: the processors, displays and methodologies differ. The practical expectation is good light-use endurance from lower-power IPS configurations, but mediocre endurance during sustained CPU/GPU work—especially with the high-end processor and OLED screen. Gaming, rendering and model inference will also produce more heat and fan noise than office applications.
Local AI: capacity is the attraction
HP markets the ZBook Ultra for running local large language models and says its memory design can support models such as Llama 3.1 70B-Q8 Instruct locally and offline. That is a manufacturer use-case claim, not a promise of a particular tokens-per-second result.

- Processor Core: Hexa-core (6 Core)
The key benefit is memory capacity. Whether a model runs acceptably depends on quantization, context size, runtime, memory allocation, drivers and thermal limits. NPU TOPS figures alone do not predict LLM performance. HP advertises up to 50 NPU TOPS, while TechRadar reported a 55-TOPS figure for its reviewed processor; these figures should not be mixed as though they were identical measurements. GPU software support through frameworks such as ROCm or DirectML may matter more for a particular workload.

Review prices were configuration-specific and are historical rather than a universal September 2026 price:
| Source and configuration | Observed price |
|---|---|
| PCWorld: Ryzen AI Max PRO 390, 64GB, 1TB, IPS | $2,229; top configuration reported at $3,699 |
| Laptop Mag: Ryzen AI Max+ PRO 395, 128GB, 2TB, OLED | $4,049; $2,599 starting price reported |
| TechRadar: regional configurations | Approximately $1,890 entry price and $3,079 for a 64GB/2TB OLED model |
HP’s configurator pricing changes by country, promotion, channel and stock. Compare the exact CPU, Radeon model, memory, SSD and display—not just the product-family name. Build-to-order memory and storage upgrades can be expensive, although memory is the component least suited to postponing because it is not user-upgradable.
Which configuration should you buy?
Best value for professional work
Choose a lower Ryzen AI Max PRO configuration with 32GB or 64GB, a 1TB SSD and the IPS display if your work is primarily coding, office productivity, moderate CAD, editing or occasional gaming. This is the most defensible configuration for buyers who want workstation support without paying for capacity they will not use.
Best balanced configuration
The Ryzen AI Max PRO 390 with Radeon 8050S, 64GB and 1TB or 2TB is the sensible middle ground. Add OLED only if contrast, color and touch matter more than glare and endurance. This version offers strong CPU performance and credible gaming without the price of the 128GB specialist model.
Best specialist configuration
Choose the Ryzen AI Max+ PRO 395, Radeon 8060S and 128GB if you run large local models, very large 3D scenes, heavy compositing projects or memory-intensive technical workloads. The premium is difficult to justify for ordinary office use or casual gaming.
Alternatives
- 14-inch MacBook Pro: Consider it for battery life, display quality and optimized creative software. Laptop Mag reported 18 hours 32 minutes in its battery test for its M4 review model. It is less suitable if you require Windows-only applications, HP’s workstation support ecosystem or Windows ISV certification. See the MacBook Pro 14 review.
- Asus ProArt PX13: A creator-focused alternative with a different value proposition and form factor. Check certification, support, ports and the exact regional configuration before choosing it over the ZBook. See Laptop Mag’s ProArt PX13 review.
- Asus ROG Flow Z13: Better suited to buyers whose priority is gaming-first portability rather than corporate deployment, business styling and workstation certification.
- Dell Precision, Lenovo ThinkPad P-series or larger ZBooks: Prefer these classes of machine when you need a discrete professional GPU, CUDA support, more cooling headroom, field-serviceable components or multiple internal drives.
- Desktop or mini PC: Usually the better value for maximum sustained performance when portability is not essential.

Final recommendation
The HP ZBook Ultra G1a is a compelling niche machine: a portable, supportable Windows workstation with unusually capable integrated graphics and enough unified memory to make local AI and large creative workloads practical. Its gaming ability is a valuable bonus, not its core identity.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor most professionals, the Ryzen AI Max PRO 390-class configuration with 64GB and 1TB or 2TB is the best balance. Reserve the Ryzen AI Max+ PRO 395, Radeon 8060S and 128GB for workloads that genuinely use the extra graphics and memory capacity. If you need CUDA, maximum sustained rendering performance, easy upgrades or high-end gaming, spend the money on a different class of machine.
