HP’s $4 million settlement over alleged misleading pricing and scarcity claims on HP.com received final approval on August 27, 2025. The case involved discounted HP computers, keyboards, and mice sold in the United States. HP did not admit wrongdoing, and the court did not find after a trial that HP’s advertising violated the law.
The ordinary deadline to submit a claim was June 9, 2025. As of 2026, consumers should not assume that standard claims remain open; the official settlement website is the authoritative source for any administrator updates.
What the HP settlement was about
The lawsuit, Carvalho et al. v. HP Inc., No. 5:21-cv-08015-PCP, was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. Plaintiffs alleged that HP.com used inflated reference prices and urgency messages that made discounts appear better or more temporary than they really were.

The complaint focused on practices including:
- Strike-through or “original” prices that plaintiffs said did not reflect a meaningful recent selling price.
- Discount labels suggesting an immediate saving based on an allegedly inflated comparison price.
- “Only 1 Left!” and similar scarcity messages that allegedly overstated how soon a product would become unavailable.
- “Weekly Deal” or limited-time language applied to products that allegedly remained on sale for extended periods.
These points came from the plaintiffs’ allegations. They were not findings that HP committed false advertising.

The example cited in the complaint
One example involved an HP All-in-One 24-dp1056qe purchased in September 2021. According to the complaint, HP.com displayed a $899.99 sale price, a $999.99 strike-through price, and language describing an instant $100 saving. Plaintiffs alleged that the computer had already been selling for approximately $899.99 since April 2021 and had rarely, if ever, been sold at the higher reference price.
The complaint also alleged that an “Only 1 Left!” message appeared for a computer that continued to be offered for weeks or months afterward. Again, these are allegations in the case record, not a court verdict following trial. The court’s preliminary approval order describes the claims and the proposed compromise.
What the $4 million settlement covered
HP agreed to fund a gross settlement of $4 million. That money was not a direct $4 million payout to consumers. The fund was also used for settlement administration, notice, court-approved attorneys’ fees and litigation costs, and service awards for the named plaintiffs.

Eligible claimants were projected to receive between $10 and $100 per qualifying product. Those figures were estimates, not guaranteed payments. The actual amount could be reduced through a pro-rata adjustment if valid claims exceeded the available balance. Any remaining funds were to be distributed according to the settlement terms to eligible claimants who submitted valid claims and cashed their payments.

Who was included in the settlement class?
A claimant generally needed to satisfy all of the following conditions:
- Be an individual located in the United States.
- Purchase a covered HP desktop, laptop, mouse, or keyboard.
- Buy the product at a discount directly from HP.com.
- Make the purchase between June 5, 2021, and October 28, 2024.
- Purchase a product that was offered on sale more than 75% of the time it was offered for sale during the class period.
- Submit a valid claim by June 9, 2025.
The 75% condition did not mean the product was discounted by 75%. It referred to the proportion of the product’s offering period during which it was advertised as being on sale.
Exact product eligibility depended on the official product-number list. Owning an HP product from a covered family was not necessarily enough.

Examples in the settlement FAQ included product numbers such as 1Q881AV, an HP Spectre x360 14 Convertible, and 1K4F1AV, an HP Envy Desktop TE012250xt. The examples were not an exhaustive product list. Consumers needed to check the official product-list and settlement documents for the exact model or product number.
Who was excluded?
The settlement materials excluded, among others:
- People who bought more than two units of the same settlement product in one order.
- HP employees and members of their immediate families.
- The presiding judge, court staff, and their immediate families.
- Counsel of record and their law firms.
- People who properly opted out of the settlement.
Purchases from Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, or another retailer were not covered by this settlement. Neither were HP printers, purchases made outside the United States, or purchases that did not meet the settlement’s discount and product requirements.
Current status: final approval, deadline closed
Status: The court granted final approval on August 27, 2025. The ordinary claim deadline was June 9, 2025.

The final-approval hearing was held on August 21, 2025, but that date should not be confused with the final disposition. The later final approval order and final judgment confirmed approval of the settlement.

Consumers who missed the deadline should check hpsettlement.com for any official payment notice, administrator update, or specifically authorized late-claim procedure. They should be cautious about third-party services promising to file a claim after the deadline.

A class-action settlement resolves disputed claims without requiring the court to decide liability after a trial. HP agreed to the settlement without admitting wrongdoing or liability. The payment was not a government fine or regulatory penalty.
Class members who remained in the settlement generally released covered claims resolved by the agreement. People who opted out preserved the ability to pursue their own claims, subject to applicable law and the settlement terms.
The distinction matters. It is accurate to say that HP finalized a settlement over allegations of misleading advertising. It is not accurate to say that a court ruled HP’s prices were deceptive or found HP guilty of false advertising.

What shoppers can learn about “sale” prices
The case highlights a broader consumer-finance issue: a percentage discount is only as meaningful as the reference price behind it. A strike-through price, “was” price, or “limited-time” label can influence a purchase even when the current price has been common for much of the product’s selling history.
For expensive electronics, shoppers can reduce uncertainty by:
- Comparing the exact model or SKU rather than relying on a product-family name.
- Checking independent historical pricing when available.
- Looking for recurring sale prices instead of assuming a “deal” is unusual.
- Treating “Only 1 Left!” as an advertising claim, not conclusive proof that inventory will immediately disappear.
- Saving order confirmations, product pages, and screenshots when making a significant purchase.
The settlement does not establish that every HP discount was misleading, nor does it mean every “limited-time” offer by any retailer is unlawful. It does show why the comparison price and the length of a promotion can matter as much as the advertised percentage off.
