To send or request money, open Venmo and tap Pay/Request, find the person, enter an amount and note, then choose Pay or Request. Payments usually arrive in the recipient’s Venmo account right away, but some bank-funded payments can remain pending for up to five business days. To move your Venmo money to a bank or eligible card, start a standard or instant transfer; the choice affects both speed and fees.
How to send money on Venmo
- In the app, tap Pay/Request. On the web, choose Pay or Request in the sidebar.
- Search for the recipient by name, Venmo username, phone number, or email. Before using a phone number or email, confirm that it is verified on the recipient’s Venmo account.
- Enter the amount and a note, then tap Pay and review the payment details.
Venmo advises users to confirm a phone number or email with the recipient before sending to it. A mistaken payment can be difficult to recover. Venmo’s sending instructions explain how to locate and pay a recipient.
How to request and receive money
To ask someone to pay you, follow the same recipient-search process, enter the amount and note, and choose Request. When someone pays you, the money appears in your Venmo account. Identity verification is not required just to receive a payment or transfer it to a bank.

When payments arrive
Payments usually reach the recipient’s Venmo account right away. Some payments funded from a bank account can take up to five business days and appear as Pending. The delivery time for the payment to a Venmo account is separate from the time required to transfer a balance out to a bank or card. Venmo’s payment timing guidance describes pending bank-funded payments.
How to transfer Venmo money to a bank or card
Venmo offers standard transfers to verified checking accounts and instant transfers to eligible U.S. bank accounts or participating Visa, Mastercard, or Discover debit cards.

- Choose a transfer destination and start the standard or instant transfer in the app.
- Review the destination, amount, transfer type, and any instant-transfer fee before confirming.
- If you start a standard transfer, Venmo gives you one hour to cancel it or switch to an instant transfer. Venmo’s transfer guidance covers this window.
How to add and verify a bank or card
- In the app, go to Me → Wallet → Banks and Cards → Add a bank or card.
- Choose instant verification through Plaid if your bank is eligible, or enter your routing and account numbers for manual verification.
- For manual verification, Venmo sends two deposits and two withdrawals of less than $1. They generally appear within 1–3 business days; follow Venmo’s prompts to confirm them.
Use accurate bank details. Venmo warns that incorrect credentials can cause a transfer to fail and may result in lost funds. See Venmo’s bank verification instructions.

Choosing a funding method for a Venmo payment
The fee and processing behavior depend on how you fund a payment. The following differences concern paying people or merchants; they do not change the separate fee and eligibility rules for transferring your balance out.
| Funding method | Verification or setup | Fee noted by Venmo | Processing behavior |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bank account | Add and verify it using Plaid, if eligible, or manual verification | No payment fee specified in the cited guidance | Some bank-funded payments can take up to five business days and show as Pending |
| Debit card | Add the card in Banks and Cards | No payment fee specified in the cited guidance | Payment timing can vary; the cited guidance does not give a debit-card processing estimate |
| Credit card | Add the card in Banks and Cards | 3% for credit-card-funded payments to people; authorized-merchant purchases do not incur a Venmo transaction fee even when paid by credit card | The cited guidance does not give a distinct processing estimate |
The 3% credit-card payment fee is the fee Venmo lists in 2026. Venmo’s fee information distinguishes payments to people from authorized-merchant purchases.

What you can do with a Venmo balance
Once identity verification gives you balance access, Venmo says you can use the balance to send payments to people, pay authorized merchants through their apps or mobile websites, pay participating merchants with Venmo QR codes, and spend with the Venmo Mastercard Debit Card in the U.S. wherever Mastercard is accepted.
Venmo does not split a payment between your balance and another preferred funding method. If the balance covers the full payment, Venmo uses it; if it does not, your preferred payment method funds the payment. Venmo’s balance-use guidance describes these options.

Personal payments, purchases, and protection
Use personal payments for appropriate person-to-person transactions, not to pay an ordinary personal profile for goods or services. Venmo says accepting payment for goods and services requires explicit authorization to accept Venmo for purchases. When Venmo offers the option, mark a qualifying payment as a purchase or pay an authorized business profile. Eligible purchase-tagged payments may receive Purchase Protection, and the recipient pays an associated fee. An unmarked payment may be difficult to recover if something goes wrong. Read Venmo’s rules for business and purchase payments before paying for goods or services.
- Check the recipient’s username, or confirm a phone number or email is verified, before sending.
- For a goods-or-services transaction, use an authorized business profile or the purchase option when available.
- Review the amount, note, funding method, and recipient before confirming.
Sending between Venmo and PayPal
Venmo’s help pages state that Visa+ is no longer available for PayPal and Venmo transactions as of February 19, 2026. Venmo says users can send money directly between PayPal and Venmo accounts using a phone number. See Venmo’s current interoperability information.
