Apple Numbers can serve as a free, manually maintained net-worth spreadsheet on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Numbers for iCloud. You enter current account and asset values, record debts, and let formulas calculate total assets, total liabilities, and net worth. The file can be stored in iCloud Drive, updated across your Apple devices, charted over time, and exported to Excel, CSV, or PDF. It does not automatically fetch bank balances or guarantee live investment valuations, so accuracy depends on your update routine.
Numbers can be used without a dedicated spreadsheet subscription. An Apple Account is required to download it on iPhone or iPad, and iCloud storage limits are separate from the app. See Apple’s [Numbers support](https://support.apple.com/numbers) and [App Store listing](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/numbers-make-spreadsheets/id361304891) for current device and service details.
What a net-worth spreadsheet measures
Net worth is a point-in-time balance-sheet measure:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Net worth = total assets − total liabilities
Assets are things you own or are entitled to receive. Liabilities are amounts you owe. Income, spending, and transfers are not themselves assets or liabilities; they change the balances that belong in your snapshot.
#1 Best Overall
Assets to list
- Checking, savings, and other cash accounts
- Brokerage, retirement, and health savings accounts
- Cryptocurrency, if applicable
- Real estate
- Vehicles
- Business ownership
- Valuable personal property you deliberately choose to track
- Receivables that are sufficiently certain to collect
Liabilities to list
- Credit-card balances
- Mortgage principal
- Auto, student, personal, and business loans
- Medical debt
- Buy-now-pay-later balances
- Tax debt
Use the outstanding principal or current balance, not a loan’s original amount.
Is Numbers really free?
Numbers is an Apple spreadsheet app for iPhone, iPad, Mac, and browser access through iCloud.com. “Free” means there is no separate Numbers spreadsheet subscription; it does not mean that an Apple device, optional iCloud+ storage, or another service has no cost. Apple’s iPad documentation also states that an Apple Account is needed to download the app. Check the [iPad guide](https://support.apple.com/en-ca/guide/numbers-ipad/tan398cb0564/ipados) and [Numbers support hub](https://support.apple.com/numbers) for current requirements.
Choose a template—or start clean
Fast route: adapt Personal Finance
Numbers’ template chooser includes a Personal Finance category on iPhone and iPad, and templates are available on Mac. It is a useful starting point if you want formatting, example tables, and styles already in place.

Better route for a durable tracker: blank spreadsheet
A blank workbook avoids inheriting budget categories and formulas that do not match your balance sheet. Use the four-sheet design below if you want a simple structure that can grow with your finances. Apple documents templates and formulas in its [iPhone guide](https://support.apple.com/en-mide/guide/numbers-iphone/tan398cb0564/ios), [iPad guide](https://help.apple.com/numbers/ipad/5.2/), and [Mac guide](https://help.apple.com/numbers/mac/).
Build the workbook
1. Dashboard
Create a small summary table with these fields. The formula references are conceptual; after typing =, select the table column or cells so Numbers inserts the exact syntax for your workbook.
| Field | Example value or formula |
|---|---|
| As-of date | Manual date |
| Total assets | =SUM(Assets::Current Value) |
| Total liabilities | =SUM(Liabilities::Current Balance) |
| Net worth | =Total Assets - Total Liabilities |
| Change since last update | =Current Net Worth - Previous Net Worth |
2. Assets table
Name the table Assets and use one numeric value column so the total remains simple.

| Category | Account or item | Institution | Current value | As-of date | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cash | Emergency savings | Bank | 12,000 | 2026-08-16 | |
| Retirement | 401(k) | Provider | 85,000 | 2026-08-16 | Balance |
| Investments | Brokerage | Provider | 34,500 | 2026-08-16 | Market value |
| Property | Home | 400,000 | 2026-08-16 | Estimated value |
3. Liabilities table
Name this table Liabilities. Enter positive balances and subtract the total once on the dashboard.
| Category | Account or debt | Institution | Current balance | Interest rate | As-of date |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Credit card | Card account | Issuer | 1,200 | 24.99% | 2026-08-16 |
| Mortgage | Home loan | Lender | 285,000 | 6.5% | 2026-08-16 |
| Student loan | Federal loan | Servicer | 18,000 | 5.5% | 2026-08-16 |
4. Net-worth history
Add one row for each measurement date and use a line chart to show the trend.
| Date | Total assets | Total liabilities | Net worth |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026-01-01 | |||
| 2026-02-01 | |||
| 2026-03-01 |
Select the Date and Net Worth columns, then insert a line chart. Numbers supports charts, tables, forms, and formulas; its capabilities are summarized in [Apple’s Numbers documentation](https://support.apple.com/numbers) and the [App Store listing](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/numbers-make-spreadsheets/id361304891).
Enter the formulas
In a destination cell, type =, choose SUM, and select the relevant column or range. For example, the Assets total sums every value in Current Value; the Liabilities total sums every value in Current Balance; Net Worth subtracts the second result from the first. Table and column names vary, so selecting cells is safer than pasting a reference copied from another workbook.
Optional measures can be useful when their definitions are explicit:
Recommended Free Tools
- Liquid net worth: cash and investments minus liabilities. Whether retirement accounts or other assets count is your choice.
- Debt-to-asset ratio: total liabilities divided by total assets.
- Change: current net worth minus previous net worth.
- Percentage change: change divided by previous net worth; handle a zero or negative prior value carefully.
Set it up on each device
iPhone
- Open Numbers and tap Choose a Template or the create-spreadsheet button.
- Choose Personal Finance or a blank spreadsheet.
- Rename the file and add or rename Assets, Liabilities, Summary, and History tables.
- Enter balances and formulas by tapping cells and selecting ranges after typing
=. - Save the document in iCloud Drive if it must appear on other devices.
- Optionally create a form for faster mobile entry.
Apple’s [iPhone Numbers guide](https://support.apple.com/en-mide/guide/numbers-iphone/tan398cb0564/ios) covers templates, formulas, saving, sharing, and exporting.

iPad
- Open Numbers and tap Choose a Template.
- Select Personal Finance or Blank.
- Build the tables, formulas, chart, and history.
- Store the workbook in iCloud Drive for cross-device access.
The larger screen is particularly helpful for formatting tables and charts. See Apple’s [iPad Numbers guide](https://help.apple.com/numbers/ipad/5.2/) and [iPad instructions](https://support.apple.com/en-ca/guide/numbers-ipad/tan398cb0564/ipados).
Mac
- Open Numbers, select New Document, and choose Personal Finance or Blank.
- Create Assets, Liabilities, Summary, and History tables.
- Enter formulas by selecting the destination cell and ranges.
- Add a chart and save the file in iCloud Drive.
- If you will reuse the design, choose File > Save as Template.
With iCloud Drive enabled and the same Apple Account in use, a custom template can be available across your Apple devices. Apple documents this in its [custom-template guide](https://support.apple.com/en-ie/guide/numbers/tan57e4f9f9c/mac) and [Mac Numbers guide](https://help.apple.com/numbers/mac/).
Browser access
Numbers for iCloud lets you create and edit spreadsheets in a browser, including from a non-Apple computer. Feature availability and interface details are not necessarily identical to the Mac, iPad, or iPhone apps.
Keep the numbers accurate
- Choose a consistent date, such as the first or last day of each month.
- View or download current account balances.
- Enter each balance as of that date.
- Value investments using the same date and convention each month.
- Update debt balances.
- Add a row to the history table.
- Investigate unusually large changes.
- Periodically export or back up a copy.
- A checking-account transfer is not new wealth.
- A mortgage payment reduces net worth by its principal portion; interest is an expense.
- Do not count a credit-card purchase and its payment as two separate losses of net worth.
- If you include a home, include its mortgage.
- Value a vehicle using a reasonable current estimate, not its purchase price.
- Apply the same conventions each month so the trend is comparable.
Handle common edge cases
Joint finances
Add an Ownership column such as Individual, Joint, Spouse or partner, Business, or Trust/custodial. Decide whether the dashboard represents the whole household or only your share.
Homes and mortgages
You can list market value as an asset and the remaining mortgage as a liability, or track estimated home equity as one net figure. The first approach is more transparent; the second is simpler.
Retirement accounts
Record the current account balance and label it as a gross value. Taxes and withdrawal penalties mean it may not equal spendable cash.
Rank #4
Credit cards
Record the outstanding balance on the snapshot date, even if you normally pay the statement in full.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Investments and cryptocurrency
Use a consistent valuation date and currency. A market-value estimate is not guaranteed cash, and Numbers does not promise live or complete investment data.
Foreign currency
Convert everything into one reporting currency, or keep currencies in separate sections. Never add dollar, euro, and pound amounts without conversion.
Negative net worth
A negative result is mathematically valid. The trend can improve while the total remains below zero.

Cross-device access requires the same Apple Account, iCloud Drive enabled, Numbers permission to use iCloud, an internet connection, and a file stored in iCloud Drive rather than only locally. Allow synchronization to finish before editing another copy. Apple’s custom-template guidance explains the same-account and iCloud Drive requirement: [read it here](https://support.apple.com/en-ie/guide/numbers/tan57e4f9f9c/mac).

Troubleshoot the workbook
The file is missing on another device
- Confirm the same Apple Account is signed in.
- Enable iCloud Drive and Numbers’ iCloud permission.
- Verify that the file is in iCloud Drive.
- Check the internet connection and wait for synchronization.
- Avoid editing conflicting copies until syncing completes.
The total is wrong
- Check whether numbers were stored as text.
- Look for hidden or blank rows, duplicates, and omitted new rows.
- Make sure liabilities are positive and subtracted only once.
- Check that a home has its mortgage and transferred balances are not counted twice.
- Use consistent currency and number formatting.
A renamed table or column breaks a formula
Rebuild it: select the destination cell, type =, and select the table or range again. Whole-column references are generally less fragile than manually typed long ranges.
You cannot find a “net worth” template
Apple’s category is Personal Finance, not necessarily a template named Net Worth. Adapt it or choose a blank workbook.
Shared edits conflict
Assign one monthly updater, agree on a valuation date, and archive prior versions. Avoid simultaneous edits to the same balance cells unless intentional collaboration is part of your process.
When Numbers is—and is not—the right tool
Numbers is a strong fit when you want no dedicated finance-app subscription, control over categories and formulas, Apple-device and browser access, charts and forms, and less reliance on services that connect directly to financial accounts. It is especially flexible for multiple properties, private investments, or unusual liabilities.
Choose a dedicated finance app if automatic bank synchronization, transaction categorization, automatic investment updates, or proactive budgeting matters more than spreadsheet control. Automation also brings subscriptions, account-linking decisions, and feature availability that vary by country and plan. Numbers does not provide personalized tax, investment, debt, or financial advice.
