The main U.S. online route is Walmart Trade-In, operated through CExchange. You identify an eligible device, answer questions about its model and condition, receive an estimated offer, print a prepaid shipping label, and send the device by FedEx or UPS Ground. After CExchange evaluates it, Walmart says you receive a Walmart eGift Card. For an in-person option, Walmart also points shoppers to ecoATM kiosks at many stores.
This is convenient store credit—not cash—and the final amount depends on the exact device and whether its condition matches your description.

What tech can you trade in?
The current CExchange catalog lists categories including:
- Cell phones
- Tablets
- Video game consoles
- Voice speakers
- MP3 players
- Wearables
- Laptops
That does not mean every device in a category qualifies. Eligibility and value can depend on the manufacturer, exact model, storage capacity, carrier or unlocked status, working condition, damage, and included accessories. TVs, cameras, printers, e-readers, accessories, and broken parts should not be assumed eligible unless the live catalog displays them.

How Walmart’s online trade-in works
- Open Walmart Trade-In. Start at walmart.cexchange.com.
- Find the exact device. Select the correct category, brand, model, generation, storage size, and carrier version. Do not substitute a similar model.
- Answer the appraisal questions. The flow may ask whether the device powers on, whether the screen is damaged, whether it is carrier-locked, and whether a charger or other accessory is included.
- Review the estimated offer. Save or photograph the quote before accepting. It is based on the information you provided, not necessarily a guaranteed final payment.
- Accept and print the label. The surfaced CExchange process provides a prepaid label and identifies FedEx or UPS Ground for shipping.
- Prepare and pack the device. Back up your data, remove account locks, factory-reset the device, remove personal cards, and follow the offer’s packing instructions.
- Ship and retain proof. Keep the quote confirmation, shipping receipt, tracking number, and photographs of the device and package.
- Wait for evaluation. CExchange evaluates the product after it arrives. The “instant” Walmart eGift Card wording should not be read as payment at the moment you accept the online quote or hand over the package.
Prepare the device before shipping
1. Back up everything
Copy photos, contacts, messages, files, authenticator data, and other important information to your new device, cloud storage, or a computer. Confirm that the backup works before erasing the old device.
2. Remove accounts and security locks
Sign out of accounts and disable services that can keep the device remotely locked:
- Apple ID and Find My
- Google account and Android device protection
- Samsung account
- Microsoft account, where relevant
- Console accounts and device activation
- Enterprise, school, or other device-management profiles
An activation-locked, organization-managed, or otherwise restricted device may be rejected or valued differently. For a financed phone, confirm that you own it outright and that its carrier status meets the quote requirements; paying it off does not automatically guarantee acceptance.

3. Factory-reset the device
Use the built-in erase or factory-reset function only after completing your backup and removing the relevant accounts. Manually deleting photos or apps is not enough. After the reset, check that the device no longer shows your account, passcode, personal content, or organization profile.

4. Remove personal cards and inspect the hardware
Remove SIM cards, microSD cards, memory cards, and unrelated accessories. Charge the device and check the screen, touchscreen, camera, microphone, buttons, ports, battery, water damage, and missing parts. Be accurate about cracks, dead pixels, battery faults, and cosmetic damage. Walmart’s preparation guidance emphasizes backing up data, removing locks, resetting the device, and selecting the correct model and condition.
Do not mail a visibly swollen, leaking, or dangerously damaged battery. Contact the program for safe instructions or use an approved electronics-recycling channel instead.
Do you need the original box or charger?
Do not assume that a missing box or charger automatically disqualifies the device. The appraisal may ask whether a charger or other accessory is included, and the answer can affect the offer. Send only the accessories required by the specific instructions; do not add unrelated items.
What if CExchange lowers or rejects the offer?
A quote is an estimate based on your answers. The final result can change if evaluation finds:

- The wrong model, storage capacity, generation, or carrier was selected
- Undisclosed screen or cosmetic damage
- A device that does not power on or has a hardware fault
- A missing required accessory
- An activation lock, account lock, or management profile
- Water damage, battery damage, or missing components
- A working condition that does not match the device
Before shipping, save the offer and document the device’s condition with clear photographs. If the evaluated amount differs or the item is rejected, use the current CExchange terms and support process for the applicable downgrade, dispute, or return rules. Do not assume a rejected or downgraded device will automatically be returned.
If the shipment is lost, keep the tracking receipt and package photographs. Any reimbursement or liability depends on the current program terms; do not assume the prepaid label guarantees a particular recovery.
How to use the Walmart eGift Card
Walmart’s gift-card terms generally allow Walmart gift cards to be used at eligible U.S. Walmart and Sam’s Club locations, in the Walmart app, and online at Walmart.com, subject to the card’s terms and purchase restrictions. The card is not equivalent to cash and is most useful if you already shop at Walmart or Sam’s Club.

Walmart’s payment guidance says you can use up to five Walmart gift cards on an online order and combine a gift card with another payment method. Gift cards generally cannot be used to buy another gift card, and other exclusions can apply to financial products, services, and particular transactions. Check the gift-card terms before relying on the balance for a specific purchase.
If you receive a physical card without a PIN, Walmart says it can be used in a store but cannot be used online or checked online or by phone. Walmart says it can be exchanged for one with a PIN at a Walmart or Sam’s Club location in the United States.
This program also is not the same as Walmart Cash, which is promotional currency. A CExchange trade-in produces a Walmart eGift Card after evaluation.

The online CExchange route is a mail-in process: you get an offer, ship the device, and wait for evaluation. It can be a good fit when you want Walmart credit and do not need an immediate transaction.

ecoATM is a separate kiosk-based option for in-person technology trade-ins. Walmart’s FY2025 ESG report described ecoATM availability in more than 3,200 Walmart U.S. stores, but availability, eligible devices, identification requirements, and payment rules can change. Check the current kiosk locator and requirements before visiting. Do not assume an ecoATM transaction produces the same payment type or amount as CExchange.
Is Walmart trade-in worth it?
Choose CExchange when:
- You already shop at Walmart or Sam’s Club.
- You prefer store credit over negotiating with a buyer.
- Your exact device appears in the live catalog.
- The estimate is close enough to competing offers.
- You value a prepaid mail-in process more than maximum resale value.
Compare other options first when:
- You need cash rather than Walmart credit.
- The device is high-value, rare, collectible, or lightly used.
- You have valuable accessories or original packaging.
- The phone has damage, a swollen battery, an activation lock, or missing parts.
- You are outside the U.S. or cannot use Walmart’s U.S. gift-card ecosystem.
- You cannot tolerate a possible condition revaluation after shipping.
Compare the exact device—not a general category—using these criteria:

| Who pays shipping? | Confirm whether the label is prepaid and which carrier is specified. |
| How is data handled? | Account removal and a factory reset remain your responsibility. |
| What protection do you have? | Review tracking, disputes, fraud protection, and lost-shipment terms. |
Alternatives to compare
- Best Buy Trade-In: compare if Best Buy credit suits your planned purchase.
- Apple Trade In: relevant for Apple devices, especially when buying Apple hardware, but it does not provide Walmart credit.
- Amazon Trade-In: useful if Amazon credit is more valuable to you than Walmart credit.
- Private sale: Facebook Marketplace, eBay, Swappa, or a local buyer may produce more, but require listing work, negotiation, fraud screening, shipping or meetups, and possible fees.
- Manufacturer or carrier programs: these may offer value tied to a new purchase, activation, financing agreement, or promotional period.
Do not rely on a generic “best payout” claim. Generate current, like-for-like quotes and compare the payment type, timing, conditions, and risks.
