The best way to sell a Mac depends on your priority. A private sale through a marketplace such as eBay or Swappa will often produce the highest net return, while Apple Trade In or a buyback service requires less work. Before using any route, identify the exact Mac, compare realistic net proceeds, back up your data, erase the computer, and confirm that it reaches the setup assistant without requesting your Apple Account.
“Mac 2022” can mean a Mac sold during 2022 or a 2022 model-generation Mac, such as the M2 MacBook Air. Those are not the same thing. Your value depends on the precise model, chip, memory, storage, condition, battery health, accessories, warranty, and location.
First, identify the exact Mac
Do not list the computer simply as a “2022 MacBook.” Record its complete configuration before requesting quotes or creating an advertisement.
On a working Mac, open Apple menu → About This Mac. Apple’s Trade In process uses the serial number to produce a more accurate Mac estimate: check Apple’s current Trade In estimator.

- Model name and model year
- Apple-silicon chip or Intel processor
- Memory or unified memory
- Storage capacity
- Screen size, if it is a laptop or iMac
- Serial number
- Battery condition and cycle count for a MacBook
- macOS version
- AppleCare or other warranty status
- Included charger, power cable, box, and accessories
- Cosmetic defects, repairs, and liquid damage
- Whether the Mac belongs to an employer or school
For example, a useful description is: MacBook Air (M2, 2022), 8GB unified memory, 256GB SSD, 13.6-inch display, Midnight. Memory and storage can materially change the price even when two computers share the same model name.
Choose the selling route

Apple Trade In
Apple Trade In is convenient if you are buying another Apple product or prefer not to deal with buyers. You can request an online estimate or have the Mac evaluated at an Apple Store. Consumer offers are generally provided as purchase credit or an Apple Gift Card rather than unrestricted cash. If a device is not eligible for credit, Apple says it can still be recycled for free. The estimate is conditional on the Mac’s actual condition matching your description. Apple says an online trade-in device generally must be received within 14 days of receiving the new device to preserve the estimated value. Apple also currently describes online processing as generally taking two to three weeks, with credit processing potentially taking another three to five business days. These are estimates, not guarantees, and current terms should be checked at the time of sale.

eBay
eBay can provide a large audience and is useful for unusual configurations or sellers trying to maximize the gross price. Its selling tools include Buy It Now, auctions, Best Offer, shipping labels, and pricing recommendations based on similar recent sales: see eBay’s selling page.
As of August 18, 2026, eBay’s seller page states that it generally charges 10% to 15% of the final value after an item sells. It also states that the first 250 listings per month are free, after which a $0.35 insertion fee applies per listing. Fees vary by category, seller status, promotions, and policy changes, so use eBay’s live fee information or calculator before listing.

Do not compare an eBay selling price directly with Apple credit. Subtract marketplace fees, shipping, insurance, packing materials, expected dispute risk, and the value of your time.
Swappa
Swappa is an alternative marketplace aimed at technology buyers. It may suit a seller who wants a technology-focused audience without using eBay. Check Swappa’s current seller fees, eligibility rules, payment process, and Mac-category availability before listing, because those details can change. A locked, institutionally managed, badly damaged, or unverified Mac may not qualify.

Local sale
Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, OfferUp, and local community groups can avoid shipping and allow an immediate handover. Meet in a public location with cameras, bring only the Mac and agreed accessories, and do not release the computer until payment is independently verified. Never treat a screenshot or email as proof of payment.
Keep the serial number and a dated record of the transaction. Do not give the buyer your Apple Account password, and hand over the Mac only after it has been erased and is showing the setup assistant.
Specialist buyback services
A buyback service such as Gazelle may be easier than a private sale. Gazelle’s selling destination currently redirects to buy.gazelle.com. Obtain a live quote for the exact configuration and condition, then check whether the payout is cash or store credit, who pays shipping, what happens if inspection changes the offer, and whether Macs are currently accepted.

Price the Mac using net proceeds
- Identify the exact configuration. Record the chip, memory, storage, screen size, year, and serial number.
- Get an Apple Trade In estimate. Treat it as a convenience baseline, not necessarily the highest available value.
- Review completed sales. Search sold or completed listings for the same configuration. Active listings show asking prices, not what buyers actually paid.
- Adjust for condition. Account for battery health, dents, screen marks, missing keys, dead ports, liquid damage, repairs, and missing accessories.
- Calculate net proceeds. Subtract fees, postage, insurance, packing costs, and a reasonable value for your time.
- Set a negotiating range. If accepting offers, list somewhat above your minimum acceptable net amount while remaining competitive with recent sales.
Apple says its estimate depends on the device, model, manufacturer, and condition, and that the final amount can change if the received condition differs from the description. Apple silicon can be attractive in the used market, but it is not a universal guarantee of a higher price than every Intel Mac. More memory and storage often matter substantially.

Recheck comparable sales immediately before listing. Used-electronics prices can change as newer Mac models appear.
Back up your data before selling
Do this before erasing anything:
- Create a verified Time Machine or other trusted backup.
- Open important files from the backup or otherwise confirm that they transferred correctly.
- Move files to your replacement Mac if needed.
- Export files that are not synchronized through iCloud or another service.
- Save license information for software that requires deauthorization.
- Review browser passwords, downloads, desktop files, and local email archives.
- Photograph the Mac’s condition and serial number for your records.
- Confirm that the Mac is not managed by an employer or school.
Apple warns that the reset process erases the Mac’s data and recommends backing up first. Its current instructions are at Apple Support.
Erase the Mac and remove Activation Lock
This is the most important part of the sale. The buyer should receive a Mac that starts at the setup assistant and does not ask for your Apple Account. Never solve an ownership prompt by giving the buyer your password.
Supported Macs: Erase All Content and Settings
Apple supports Erase All Content and Settings on Macs with Apple silicon and Intel Macs with the T2 Security Chip when they run macOS Monterey 12 or later. Apple’s official page is the controlling source if your menu labels differ.

- macOS Ventura 13 or later: Apple menu → System Settings → General → Transfer or Reset → Erase All Content and Settings.
- macOS Monterey 12: Apple menu → System Preferences → Erase All Content and Settings.
Follow the prompts, allow the Mac to restart, and stop at the setup assistant. Do not continue through setup with your own account. This supported reset path is designed to remove personal data and settings while handling the account relationship as part of the reset.
Older Macs without that option
If the option is unavailable, follow Apple’s older-Mac procedure:
- If the Mac runs macOS Mojave 10.14 or earlier and has iTunes, open iTunes → Account → Authorizations → Deauthorize This Computer.
- Sign out of iCloud or your Apple Account.
- Sign out of iMessage through Messages → Settings or Preferences → iMessage → Sign Out.
- Start macOS Recovery.
- Use Disk Utility to erase the startup disk.
- Reinstall macOS.
- When the setup assistant appears, press Command-Q to shut down.
- On an Intel Mac, reset NVRAM if appropriate.
Use Apple’s current Mac preparation and reset instructions for the exact Recovery procedure for your Mac.
If the Mac will not boot
Do not advertise it as fully working. Check the charger, power, display, and—where appropriate—external-monitor behavior. Describe it as for parts or repair only if that is accurate.
If the computer contains personal data and cannot boot, do not casually sell it with the drive intact. Use a secure data-erasure, authorized repair, or electronics-recycling route. A swollen, damaged, or defective battery should not be shipped or pressed into place; use an authorized repair or recycling option instead.

Check for organizational management
A Mac enrolled in an employer’s or school’s device-management system may remain unusable to a private buyer even after an ordinary reset. The organization must remove its management profile and any ownership or Activation Lock association. Contact the organization’s IT department before listing and do not promise that the buyer can use the Mac until removal is confirmed.
Create an accurate listing
A strong listing reduces negotiations and disputes. Include:
- Exact model and year
- Chip or processor
- Memory and storage
- Screen size and color
- Battery health or cycle count for MacBooks
- macOS version
- Included charger and accessories
- AppleCare or warranty status
- Repair history and replacement parts
- Every dent, scratch, screen mark, keyboard issue, dead port, or other defect
- A statement that it has been erased and is at the setup screen

Keep sensitive information out of public photographs; if you photograph the serial-number area, obscure the serial number in the listing while retaining a private record. eBay recommends specific titles, multiple clear photographs, honest blemish disclosure, and pricing based on similar recent sales.
Ship or hand over the Mac safely
Shipping
- Use a rigid outer box, not just the retail packaging.
- Protect the screen and corners.
- Prevent the Mac from moving inside the package.
- Photograph the packed parcel before sealing it.
- Use tracking and appropriate insurance.
- Keep the drop-off receipt.
- Do not ship a Mac with a swollen, damaged, or defective battery.
Apple’s current packaging guidance says battery-containing electronics should be shipped with less than 30% battery charge, surrounded by at least 2.5 inches of suitable filler, with only one device per box. Follow the carrier’s current lithium-battery rules as well as Apple’s guidance: Apple Trade In shipping information.
Local handover
- Meet in a public place with cameras, ideally during daylight.
- Verify payment independently through your bank or payment service.
- Do not accept screenshots, pending notices, or emailed “payment confirmations.”
- Give the buyer the erased Mac at the setup assistant.
- Provide only the charger and accessories included in the agreement.
- Keep a dated receipt identifying the model and serial number.
After the sale
Retain the listing, messages, tracking number, payment record, photos, and serial-number record until the transaction is complete and any dispute period has passed. Watch for payment reversals or marketplace disputes.
If you forgot to erase the Mac, contact the buyer and marketplace immediately. Change passwords for accounts used on the computer, revoke active sessions, review Find My, and contact Apple or the platform if the Mac remains linked to your account. If you receive a revised trade-in offer, review the condition explanation. Apple says you can accept or reject a revised value; if you reject it, Apple says it will cancel the trade-in and return the old device subject to the program’s terms.
Finally, transfer or cancel AppleCare where applicable and remove the Mac from personal records only after the handover and payment are complete. Tax treatment can depend on your circumstances, including whether the Mac was personal or business property and whether you sold it for a gain, so obtain individualized tax advice if that question applies to you.
