On Android, open the Google Play Store, tap your profile picture, then choose Payments & subscriptions → Redeem code. Enter the code, tap Redeem, and check the Google Account shown before tapping Confirm. Redeemed gift-card value is generally tied to that account and cannot be moved later.
First, identify what kind of code you have
A Google Play gift card or gift code usually adds prepaid value to your Google Play balance. A promotional code may instead give you a discount, promotional balance, or an offer limited to an app, item, account, or promotion. Subscription codes may have to be redeemed through the subscription’s own activation or purchase flow; do not assume they work as general Play balance. A specialty gift card bought through Google Play may need to be redeemed with the third-party brand.

Gift-card codes are typically 16 alphanumeric characters, though digital codes can differ. Google’s gift-card guidance describes code formats and redemption. When entering a code, omit spaces and dashes.
Redeem a code on an Android phone or tablet
- Open the Google Play Store app.
- Tap your profile picture in the top-right corner.
- Tap Payments & subscriptions, then Redeem code.
- Enter the code and tap Redeem.
- Review the Google Account shown as the recipient, then tap Confirm if it is the right one.
Follow Google’s current Android redemption steps if the labels differ on your device. The account displayed at confirmation is important: a gift-card balance generally cannot be transferred to another Google Account after redemption.

Redeem a code on a computer
- Go to play.google.com/redeem and sign in to the Google Account that should receive the value.
- Enter the code and select Redeem.
- Check the account displayed, then select Confirm.
Google also documents this process in its gift-card and gift-code redemption instructions. If more than one account is signed in, verify the selected account before confirming.
Apply a code during checkout
- Begin buying eligible Google Play content and continue to the payment-method screen.
- Open the payment-method selector and choose Redeem code.
- Enter the code and follow the on-screen instructions.
This route is useful when the code is a promotion for a particular purchase. Whether it applies depends on that offer’s terms and eligible item.

Check where the value or offer went
To review balance, open the Play Store and tap profile picture → Payments & subscriptions, then review the payment methods or Play balance shown. The exact display can vary by app version and region. Google’s balance help page explains adding to and checking Play balance.

Fix common Google Play code errors

| “Couldn’t redeem this code” or invalid code | Check for mistyped characters, spaces, or dashes; confirm it is a Google Play code rather than a specialty card; check for expiration, country/currency restrictions, or a balance limit. | Re-enter the code manually without spaces or dashes. Google’s gift-card troubleshooting guidance covers invalid, previously redeemed, region-restricted, unreadable, and balance-limit errors. Some Play features may not work normally on workplace or school-managed Google Accounts; if redemption behaves unexpectedly, try the intended personal account.

Usually not. Google Play gift cards are generally restricted to the country and currency where they were purchased. The Play country or region, payment profile, and physical location may also matter. If you are traveling, you may need to return to the eligible country to redeem or use the code. Changing your Play country does not move balance already redeemed in another country. Protect the code and understand transfer and refund limits
- Never share a redemption code or send someone a photo of it in response to a demand for taxes, bail, utility bills, tech support, a job fee, debt collection, or another payment. Google Play cards are for eligible Play purchases, not payment to people or businesses outside Google Play. Google describes these risks in its gift-card and scam guidance.
- Buy cards through Google or authorized retailers. Avoid code marketplaces and “free code” generators, which create fraud and compatibility risks.
- Redeemed gift-card balance is generally nontransferable between accounts. Gift cards and prepaid balance are generally nonrefundable, subject to legal requirements and specific regional policies; check Google’s refund policy for the applicable location.
