Keep the fee token required by the network where a transaction will execute—or use a wallet or service that explicitly sponsors or converts the fee. Assets and balances do not automatically move between chains: ETH on Ethereum, for example, is not ETH available for gas on Base or Arbitrum. In 2026, some wallets let eligible users pay without holding the native token, but those options depend on the chain, wallet, asset, transaction and service rules.
What gas you need before you send
Gas is the fee for processing a transaction on a blockchain. Ordinarily, the network charges it in that network’s gas asset. A token with the same ticker—or a wrapped version of an asset—does not necessarily qualify. Check the destination network and the asset accepted for fees before you bridge, swap, send or interact with a dapp.
- Check the network, not just the token name. ETH held on Ethereum does not establish an ETH balance on Base, Arbitrum or Optimism. You need the fee asset on the chain where the transaction runs, unless the transaction qualifies for an alternative payment method.
- Distinguish the fee asset from the asset being moved. A bridge may move a token without leaving you enough of the destination chain’s gas asset for a later transaction.
- Do not assume a wrapped asset pays gas. GOAT Network, for example, accepts BTC bridged from Bitcoin Layer 1 as gas; BTCB does not pay gas there. See GOAT Network’s setup and gas documentation.
- Check the final fee and route before signing. Bridge fees, source-chain fees and destination-chain gas are separate considerations, and a displayed quote may change before execution.
The rule is not simply “you always need the native token.” Stablecoin gas payment, sponsored transactions and refuel features exist, but none is a universal conversion of any token into gas on any chain.
Choose a way to cover fees

Pay network fees with a stablecoin in an OpenSea email-login wallet
OpenSea’s documentation dated March 10, 2026 says stablecoin gas payment is enabled by default for its email-login wallets. It does not support WalletConnect or MetaMask wallets. OpenSea lists Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum One, Arbitrum Nova, Optimism and Polygon among supported chains, but does not say that every stablecoin works on every listed chain. Check the available fee choices for the specific transaction. Details: OpenSea’s gas-fee guidance.
For an NFT purchase
- Open the NFT and select Buy now.
- At checkout, open Pay network fees with.
- Select a supported stablecoin and choose Confirm.
- Enter the authentication code if prompted.
The same feature can cover fees for supported token swaps and sends, but the stablecoins available depend on the chain. The first eligible bundled transaction on each supported chain automatically performs a one-time wallet delegation; OpenSea says it is included in that first bundled transaction at no additional cost. Fee quotes are estimates and can change before execution.

To disable the feature
Go to Profile settings → Embedded Wallet → Smart Account and uncheck Enable User Operations.
Check MetaMask sponsorship eligibility first
MetaMask currently lists Monad, SEI and Solana for gas sponsorship. Sponsorship is conditional, not a general promise to cover every transaction on those networks. MetaMask says availability can change and is not guaranteed indefinitely. Its current eligibility and failure rules are in MetaMask’s gas sponsorship documentation.

MetaMask sponsorship uses smart accounts based on EIP-7702. If an account has not been upgraded, MetaMask automatically converts it when the user submits the first eligible transaction on a supported network. MetaMask says sponsorship cannot currently be opted out of; manually disabling smart accounts causes them to be re-enabled when an eligible sponsored transaction is submitted.
Why sponsorship may not appear
- The transaction is not on Monad, SEI or Solana, or its type is not eligible.
- A network-specific condition, such as Monad’s remaining-balance requirement, is not met.
- The transaction exceeds 5,000,000 gas units.
- The account is a hardware-wallet account, such as Ledger or Trezor.
- The transaction crosses between networks where cross-chain activity is excluded.
If an option is unavailable, do not assume the transaction is free; arrange the ordinary gas asset or reconsider the transaction.

Use OneKey sponsorship for its documented scenarios
OneKey introduced Gas Sponsorship in OneKey App 6.5.0. Its documented scenarios are token transfers on Ethereum mainnet and Arbitrum, swaps through centralized channels, and USDC deposits on Arbitrum for perps. This is a narrower set of supported activity, not a universal wallet-wide gas balance. See OneKey’s Gas Sponsorship instructions.
- Update OneKey App to version 6.5.0 or later.
- Start a supported transaction.
- Choose Gas Sponsorship in the network-fee options.
- Confirm the transaction and sign.
OneKey documents a limit of 10 sponsored transactions per user per day, resetting automatically the next day. Sponsorship may be unavailable if the quota is used, the network or scenario is unsupported, the service is unavailable, or fair-use checks apply. If a transaction exceeds the subsidy, OneKey prompts the user to pay the standard fee. In some cases, OneKey first sends a small amount of gas to the wallet and then executes the transaction, so the explorer can show two records. Any amount left after the actual fee is consumed remains in the wallet.
Bridge or refuel when the destination lacks gas
If you need assets on another network, a bridge moves them; it does not necessarily solve the destination-gas problem. Polygon Portal offers a Refuel feature using the 0x API for select tokens, intended to avoid acquiring destination native tokens separately. It is not universal gas conversion. For a supported route, Polygon Portal’s current connection and bridge steps are documented at Polygon Portal.
Connect and bridge in Polygon Portal
- Open Polygon Portal and select Connect Wallet.
- Choose MetaMask, Coinbase, OKX or a WalletConnect-compatible wallet, then approve the connection.
- Select Bridge your Asset on the main page, or choose Bridge from the sidebar.
- Choose source and destination chains, then select a token from the list.
- Enter an amount or choose a percentage of the balance.
- Review and confirm in the wallet.
- Follow progress under Transactions in the sidebar.
For a Polygon-to-Ethereum claim, the documented buttons are Initiate Claim and then Claim Tokens. Polygon zkEVM-to-Ethereum ETH and custom-token transfers are generally claimable within 30–45 minutes according to Polygon’s documentation; this is not a guarantee for every route or transfer.

Add a custom token in Polygon Portal
- Select Manage Tokens at the bottom-right of the dashboard and search by token name.
- If the token appears, select Add.
- If it does not, select the + at the bottom-right of the Manage tokens window, enter the token contract address and select the add-token option shown after validation.
Adding a token to the interface does not turn it into a gas asset; verify the chain’s fee requirements separately.

Use the exact values in GOAT Network’s quick start if adding the network manually. GOAT Bridge documents routes involving Bitcoin, BNB Chain, Ethereum and Metis, with assets including BTC, BTCB, DOGE, BANG and GOATED. The receiving network’s native gas requirement remains separate from which other assets a bridge route supports.

Bridge native BTC to GOAT
- In GOAT Bridge, use the default Bridge view and select the source network and asset.
- Connect the sending and receiving wallets and enter the amount.
- Check the source and destination chains, amount, gas fee, bridge fee and target address.
- Select Transfer and approve the wallet transaction.
- Track the transfer under Transaction History or through linked Telegram notifications.
The Receive tab accepts BTC from Bitcoin mainnet only. Select From an Exchange or From a Wallet as appropriate. The documented minimum is 0.0002 BTC to avoid treatment as dust. For an exchange withdrawal, choose BTC on Bitcoin mainnet and account for the withdrawal fee so the amount received stays above the bridge minimum; BTCB or another wrapped variant is not the documented receive route.
GOAT documents a 0.1% service fee on BTC bridging plus the Bitcoin Layer 1 network fee. Minimums depend on route and asset, fees are dynamic, and BTC transfers cannot contain more than 200 UTXOs or exceed the UI maximum.
GOAT fee settings
GOAT documents this EIP-1559 fee formula: Total Fee = Gas Used × (Base Fee + Priority Fee). Its suggested values are Max Base Fee: 0.000130007 Gwei, Base Fee: 0.000000007 Gwei, and Priority Fee: 0.00013 Gwei. These are documented suggestions, not a guaranteed final fee; live network conditions affect the actual amount.

- On the wallet confirmation screen, locate the network-fee field and choose its edit option.
- In MetaMask, switch to the Advanced tab and enter the documented values if using GOAT’s suggested settings.
- If available, enable the wallet option to save them as GOAT Network defaults.
- Save, then inspect the final transaction summary before signing.
Recover from common GOAT bridge problems
- No BTC for gas: bridge a small amount of native BTC from Bitcoin mainnet.
- Slow transfer: allow source-chain confirmations and check transaction history before doing anything again.
- High fee estimate: review advanced gas settings and the final wallet quote.
- Wrong network or asset selected: cancel before signing, reopen the selector and choose the correct route.
- Bitcoin transaction unconfirmed: if appropriate, increase the fee rate in the sending wallet.
- Possible duplicate submission: do not resubmit while the bridge is processing; duplicate submissions can create recovery issues.
For app builders: sponsor users through a policy
Gas sponsorship for a dapp is a developer-managed payment arrangement. In Alchemy’s documented flow, a Gas Manager policy determines which user operations the service may sponsor; it does not make every user transaction free. See Alchemy’s basic Gas Sponsorship guide.
- Create a policy in the Gas Manager dashboard and configure spending rules, custom rules, allowlists, blocklists or a sponsorship expiry.
- Request sponsorship data using
alchemy_requestGasAndPaymasterAndData. - Place the returned
paymasterandpaymasterDatafields in the user operation. - Submit the operation with
eth_sendUserOperation.
For custom eligibility, Alchemy sends a POST request containing userOperation, policyId, chainId and webhookData. The endpoint must return HTTP 200 with JSON such as {"approved": true} or {"approved": false}. Other responses are treated as errors; sponsorship on failure occurs only if the policy’s failure-sponsorship option is enabled.

- What asset does that network accept for gas, and is your balance on that same network?
- If using a stablecoin fee, sponsorship or refuel feature, does this exact wallet, token, network and transaction qualify?
- What are the source-chain fee, bridge fee and destination fee, and can the quote change?
- Does the transaction leave enough gas for the next action, rather than only completing this one?
- Have you checked the recipient address, route, amount and final wallet summary before signing?
