The practical distinction is that YouTube generally will not share its ad revenue or unlock YPP fan-funding features for you, but you can use videos to attract customers, sponsors, affiliate sales, members, or buyers for your own products. In other words, YouTube can be the route to your income without being the one that pays it.
Here, “partner” means a YPP member—not a brand, affiliate, or third-party business partner. You do not need YPP to promote a permitted affiliate offer, sell your own service, collect leads, or negotiate a sponsorship. You do still need to follow YouTube’s broader rules and the advertising, privacy, and consumer-protection requirements that apply to you.
What you can—and cannot—do without YPP
YPP is YouTube’s program for eligible creators to access YouTube-native monetization. Its requirements and features can vary by country, channel, and feature. External revenue is different: a buyer may find you through a YouTube video and pay you, a sponsor, or another platform.
| Can earn externally without YPP | Generally requires YPP or feature eligibility |
|---|---|
| Affiliate commissions; sponsorships; sales of your services, digital products, or physical goods; external memberships; leads and bookings; licensing original content. | YouTube ad-revenue sharing and YouTube Premium revenue share; YouTube channel memberships; Super Chat, Super Stickers, and Super Thanks; certain native YouTube Shopping and creator-support features. |
YouTube says its fan-funding features require YPP participation, creator age of at least 18, and availability in the creator’s location. Check YouTube’s fan-funding eligibility guidance for current details. Do not describe an external checkout or affiliate link as “turning on YouTube monetization”: it earns business revenue around your channel, not a share of YouTube’s ad inventory.

YouTube’s monetization policy requirements apply to channels in or seeking YPP, while broader obligations—including Community Guidelines, Terms of Service, and copyright rules—also matter to creators generally. See YouTube’s channel monetization policies. An external revenue model is not a workaround for copied content or other policy violations.
Eight ways to earn from a YouTube audience without ad revenue
1. Affiliate marketing
An affiliate program gives you a tracked link or code. If a viewer makes an eligible purchase through it, you may receive a commission under that program’s terms. This can suit reviews, comparisons, tutorials, setup guides, troubleshooting, and buying guides—but views alone do not guarantee sales. A small video reaching people ready to choose a specific product can be more valuable than a much larger video with little buying intent.
- Choose a product that genuinely fits a problem your audience has.
- Read the program’s commission, attribution window, refund, payout, geographic, and promotion rules.
- Use the program’s tracked link or code in a clear, relevant place in the description; add a pinned comment only when it helps viewers.
- Explain what the product does and any meaningful limitations, then disclose your financial connection plainly near the recommendation and link.
- Track clicks, eligible conversions, reversals or refunds, and net commission—not just views.
High commissions are not a sound reason to recommend a product you would not stand behind. Returns, canceled subscriptions, attribution limits, and ad blockers can all reduce earnings. Do not imply personal use or testing if that is not true. For example, Gumroad allows creators to work with affiliates and set commissions, with tracking details that vary by arrangement; see its affiliate guidance and affiliate FAQ.
2. Sponsorships and brand deals
A sponsor may pay for a short mention, product integration, demonstration, dedicated video, description link, coupon code, or a series. A smaller channel can still be relevant if it reaches a clearly defined audience—such as local homeowners, a particular profession, or people comparing a specialized tool. Subscriber count is only one part of the pitch; audience fit, expertise, typical views, and the content’s usefulness to the sponsor matter too.
Prepare a one-page media kit with your niche, audience, representative performance information, and contact details. Approach relevant companies with a specific proposed integration rather than a vague request to collaborate. Before agreeing, put the deliverables, timeline, fee and payment schedule, revision limits, cancellation terms, exclusivity, and any rights for the brand to reuse your footage in writing. Usage rights and exclusivity can have real value; do not grant broad, perpetual rights by default. Be especially cautious if a sponsor asks you to make unsupported health, financial, safety, or performance claims.
Disclose the paid relationship in the video in a way viewers can readily notice and understand; a description-only disclosure may be easy to miss. The FTC’s disclosure guidance for social media influencers explains the importance of clear disclosures for paid relationships and other material connections.

3. Sell a service or expertise
For a small channel, one well-matched client can produce more revenue than a large number of low-intent views. A video can demonstrate expertise and lead to consulting, coaching, tutoring, editing, design, photography, repairs, software implementation, or another service. This is often the most direct model for professionals and specialists.
Make videos that solve a specific problem, then offer a reasonable next step: a booking page, quote request, audit, consultation, or application. A simple landing page can explain who the service is for, what the buyer receives, and how to get started. Qualify leads before scheduling calls. Services can earn with a modest audience, but revenue depends on your available time and fulfillment; it is not passive income.
4. Sell a digital product
Templates, spreadsheets, checklists, lesson plans, presets, design assets, guides, scripts, mini-courses, and software can all complement a useful channel. A product is more likely to be worth building when the same audience problem appears repeatedly and buyers would pay to save time, reduce uncertainty, or get implementation help beyond what a free video provides.
Validate the idea before building a large course or complex product. Look for recurring questions, invite viewers to join an interest list, or test a small product with a clear promise and defined buyer. Keep the checkout simple, state what the customer gets, explain support and refund terms, and account for taxes, privacy, accessibility, and any rules relevant to the product. Avoid exaggerated income or outcome claims.
Third-party services can handle parts of sales, but their fees and terms change. Patreon supports memberships and one-time purchases; its current pricing says applicable creator pages published after August 4, 2025 use a standard 10% platform fee, before processing, payout, currency-conversion fees, and taxes. Check Patreon’s pricing and fee overview before choosing it. Gumroad can suit simpler digital-product sales and affiliate arrangements. Kit may suit creators building email capture, newsletters, products, or paid subscriptions; review its current pricing and terms before committing.
5. Offer external memberships or fan support
Viewers may pay for a specific recurring benefit: a monthly Q&A, project files, extended versions, behind-the-scenes access, early releases, or a focused community. “Support my channel” is less concrete than explaining exactly what members receive and how often.

Start with one or two benefits you can reliably deliver. Too many perks can turn a membership into an unpaid second job, and a missed promise can damage trust. External membership platforms are independent of YouTube’s native fan-funding tools; they do not make you a YPP member.
6. Sell physical products or merchandise
Creators may sell books, prints, apparel, handmade goods, kits, or products connected to the channel’s subject through an external store. This can make sense when viewers already ask for something tangible or the product is a natural extension of the content. Include the costs of inventory, shipping, returns, customer support, and payment processing when judging whether the margin works.
Do not assume YouTube Shopping is a general non-YPP workaround. Shopify’s documentation for its YouTube Shopping integration lists monetization approval, at least 1,000 subscribers, a supported YPP country, and other conditions. See Shopify’s current eligibility information; an external store linked from a video is a different approach.
7. Generate leads and build an email list
An email list gives you a way to reach interested people beyond any one video platform. Offer a useful resource—such as a checklist, sample, or guide—in exchange for an opt-in, then send relevant follow-up and offers. A simple sequence might welcome subscribers, ask what problem they are solving, and point them to a suitable service, product, event, or recommendation.

8. License original content
Original footage, wildlife or event clips, music, animation, interviews, demonstrations, and other material may have licensing value if a buyer wants permission to use it. You must own or control the rights you are offering. Uploading a video to YouTube does not give you the right to license every element in it: third-party clips, music, people’s likenesses, and some locations or trademarks may require separate permission.

Choose a model that matches your channel
| Channel or audience | Good first model to test |
|---|---|
| Product reviews or how-to tutorials | Relevant affiliate links; consider selective sponsorships as audience fit becomes clear. |
| Professional expertise | Services, consulting, audits, or coaching. |
| Education or teaching | Tutoring, a small digital product, or a course validated by audience interest. |
| Strong community | External membership with one dependable benefit. |
| Local audience | Bookings, quote requests, leads, or a local sponsor. |
| Creative work | Commissions, licensing, digital assets, or merchandise. |
| Entertainment | Sponsorships, memberships, merchandise, or licensing, depending on audience fit. |
| Very small but narrowly targeted audience | A service or a high-value, genuinely relevant affiliate offer. |
| Large reach but weak purchase intent | Improve the match between audience need and offer before adding more links. |
Compare options by the likely value of a conversion, time needed to fulfill the offer, startup cost, trust risk, refunds or chargebacks, regulatory exposure, scalability, and dependence on third-party platforms. There is no universal subscriber threshold for external sales, but there is also no guarantee that any particular audience will buy.
A practical setup plan
- Pick one viewer problem. Choose a question your videos already attract, not an unrelated product you would like to sell.
- Select one revenue route. Start with an affiliate recommendation, service, small product, sponsor pitch, or membership—not every option at once.
- Make the next step concrete. Set up a relevant tracked link, booking page, product page, or opt-in page. Check it on mobile and confirm checkout or booking works.
- Connect it to the right videos. Add a concise call to action where a viewer with that problem would find it useful. Avoid pasting the same unrelated pitch everywhere.
- Disclose and explain. State when you may earn a commission, received a product, or were paid. Do not rely on viewers to infer the relationship.
- Measure the business result. Track clicks, leads, purchases, refunds, fulfillment time, and net revenue. Views and subscribers alone do not show whether an offer is working.
- Improve before expanding. If people click but do not buy, review the offer, page, price, and audience fit. If fulfillment is overwhelming, simplify it before adding another platform.
Disclosure, rights, and other safeguards
For U.S.-facing content, the FTC expects clear disclosure of material connections, including payment, free products, discounts, employment, or personal relationships with a brand. Put the disclosure where viewers can notice it and understand it; for video, that commonly means saying it in the video as well as placing it near the relevant description link. The FTC notes that “affiliate link” by itself may not tell viewers that you can earn a commission. A clearer example is: “Some links are affiliate links, which means I may earn a commission if you buy through them, at no extra cost to you.” If you received a free product and may earn affiliate commission, disclose both connections. See the FTC’s endorsement guidance and affiliate disclosure examples. Rules can differ by country; creators reaching U.S. consumers from elsewhere may still need to consider U.S. requirements.
A sponsorship label should be clear rather than vague. “Paid partnership” or “#ad” may help in suitable contexts, but placement, prominence, format, and audience all matter. A label buried among hashtags or only in a description may not be enough. YouTube also provides paid-promotion disclosures and policies; comply with the platform’s applicable requirements as well as local law.
Keep records of sponsorship terms, affiliate earnings, expenses, refunds, and customer payments. Tax treatment and reporting depend on where you live and the structure of your business, so do not assume platform payouts are tax-free. For minors, payment providers, contracts, and tax reporting may require a parent or guardian. Channels marked Made for Kids may face feature and audience-targeting restrictions.
External monetization does not cure copyright infringement. Get permission or use material you have rights to use, and avoid unsupported claims in sensitive areas such as health, finance, law, or safety. If you use AI tools, the tool itself is not the whole question: YouTube’s policy emphasizes original, authentic, substantive material and says repetitive or mass-produced content may be ineligible for YPP. AI assistance alone does not establish that a channel is ineligible, nor does it guarantee eligibility.
Common mistakes that cost creators money or trust
- Waiting for a large subscriber count: A relevant service or offer can work with a smaller, targeted audience, though results are never assured.
- Adding irrelevant affiliate links: Poor fit lowers the chance of a sale and can undermine future recommendations.
- Hiding the commercial relationship: A vague or hard-to-find disclosure can mislead viewers and create compliance risk.
- Accepting unclear sponsorship terms: Unspecified revisions, reuse rights, exclusivity, or payment timing can leave you doing more work for less than expected.
- Building a large product before validating demand: Test whether viewers want the solution before spending months creating it.
- Overloading a membership with promises: Benefits should be sustainable, not a second full-time content schedule.
- Assuming ads on a video mean you are earning: Do not count on ad revenue unless your YPP status and eligibility are confirmed by YouTube.
- Relying on copied or low-effort mass-produced content: External revenue is not protection from platform, copyright, or audience-trust consequences.
Frequently asked questions
Can I earn affiliate commissions without YPP?
Yes. YPP is not a universal prerequisite for external affiliate programs. You still need to meet the program’s rules, follow YouTube’s general policies, and disclose your financial connection clearly.

Can I get a sponsor with fewer than 1,000 subscribers?
Potentially. Some brands may value a small, specific audience, but no subscriber count guarantees a deal. Show why your viewers match the sponsor’s customer and define the deliverables and terms.
Can I sell a course from YouTube without being a partner?
You can direct viewers to an external course or checkout without YPP, subject to applicable laws and platform rules. Validate demand, describe the course accurately, and make support and refund terms clear.
Can I use Patreon instead of YPP?
You can use Patreon for external memberships or one-time purchases if it suits your audience. It does not replace YPP or provide YouTube ad-revenue sharing or native fan-funding features.
Can I use YouTube Shopping without YPP?
Do not assume so. Shopify’s documentation for its integration lists YPP approval and other eligibility requirements. An external store link is a separate option.
Recommended Free Tools
Do I have to disclose a free product?
A free product can be a material connection, particularly when it is provided by a brand whose product you discuss. Make the relationship clear to viewers; disclose any affiliate commission as well if applicable.
What is the best option for a small channel?
It depends on the audience’s problem and your skills. A service can suit expertise-led channels; relevant affiliate offers can fit buyer-intent reviews; a small digital product can fit recurring educational needs. Start with one and measure results.
Should I join YPP later?
If your channel becomes eligible and YouTube-native revenue fits your goals, you can consider applying. External revenue and YPP are not mutually exclusive, but each has separate eligibility, policy, and operating requirements.
