Yes, you can create a Litecoin-derived cryptocurrency from the open-source Litecoin Core v0.15 codebase—but compiling it and changing its name is not enough. An independent coin needs its own genesis block, network identifiers, ports, address formats, peer-discovery infrastructure, consensus rules, wallet behavior, and operating nodes.
This is a technical guide for an experienced developer building a private regtest chain, public testnet, or educational fork. Litecoin v0.15 is a historical release, not a sensible default for a production mainnet in 2026. The official Litecoin release page lists substantially newer releases, including v0.21.5.6, with later security and validation fixes.
What you are actually building
A coin is a native asset secured by its own blockchain. A token is issued on another blockchain. A forked codebase is modified software copied from Litecoin; it becomes an independent blockchain only when its chain identity and rules are changed and nodes run that network.

This guide targets a new Litecoin-derived UTXO blockchain. It does not create an LTC token, and it does not create a separate cryptocurrency merely by renaming the wallet or changing its logo.

Should you use Litecoin v0.15?
Use v0.15 for historical study, classroom work, local experiments, and controlled private networks. Its older architecture can be easier to inspect and demonstrates the classic Bitcoin/Litecoin chain-parameter model.
Do not treat it as production-ready software. It predates later security fixes and consensus changes, may be difficult to build on modern distributions, has obsolete wallet and database assumptions, and lacks later Litecoin hardening and features. A public chain holding meaningful funds should start from a maintained upstream release and undergo a serious consensus and security review.
As a practical rule:
- Regtest: safest place to learn and automate development.
- Public testnet: appropriate for testing peers, miners, wallets, and explorers.
- Mainnet: a separate engineering, operational, legal, and security project.
Legal and branding considerations
The v0.15 repository includes an MIT-style license. Review and preserve the notices in the COPYING file, and check the licenses of bundled dependencies separately. Open-source licensing permits code reuse under its terms; it does not grant permission to use Litecoin trademarks, logos, branding, or a confusingly similar name.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA code license also does not eliminate securities, money-transmission, sanctions, tax, privacy, consumer-protection, or advertising obligations. A public coin sale or exchange listing should be reviewed by counsel familiar with every relevant jurisdiction. This is not legal advice.
Step 1: Pin the historical source
Use a clean 64-bit Linux virtual machine or dedicated development machine. Obtain the historical source rather than building the current repository branch:
git clone https://github.com/litecoin-project/litecoin.git
cd litecoin
git checkout 0.15
git rev-parse HEAD
git status
Record the commit hash in your project documentation and build metadata. Do not substitute the current master branch for the v0.15 checkout. Preserve the upstream license and attribution files.
Step 2: Install dependencies and establish a baseline
The v0.15 Unix build documentation lists a C++ toolchain and tools such as Git, Autoconf, Automake, Libtool, and pkg-config, along with Boost, OpenSSL, and libevent. Qt dependencies are needed for the graphical wallet. ZMQ and miniupnpc are optional features.
Wallet-enabled builds generally require Berkeley DB. The v0.15 build guide warns that Berkeley DB 5.1 or later can break binary wallet compatibility with executables built against Berkeley DB 4.8. For wallet portability, build or obtain Berkeley DB 4.8 in an isolated, reproducible environment. If portability is not required, the documented incompatible-BDB option may be used deliberately:
./autogen.sh
./configure
make
make check
For a headless node:
./autogen.sh
./configure --without-gui
make
make check
For a walletless build:
./configure --disable-wallet
A walletless node cannot provide the normal built-in wallet, although mining through getblocktemplate remains possible. A successful build should produce binaries including:

src/litecoin-tx
src/litecoin-qt
The last binary appears only when GUI support is enabled. Before modifying anything, run the unmodified client in regtest and confirm that compilation, dependencies, RPC, wallet behavior, and block generation work independently of your fork.
Step 3: Test the unmodified client in regtest
Run these commands against the v0.15 binary, checking the output if an RPC name or wallet behavior differs in your exact checkout:
./src/litecoind -regtest -daemon
./src/litecoin-cli -regtest getblockchaininfo
./src/litecoin-cli -regtest createwallet "devwallet"
./src/litecoin-cli -regtest getnewaddress
./src/litecoin-cli -regtest generatetoaddress 101 <ADDRESS>
Use a fresh data directory for every chain experiment. Never point the fork at an existing Litecoin data directory.
Step 4: Design the coin before editing code
Consensus parameters should be written down, reviewed, and frozen before launch. This example is illustrative, not a recommended economic design:
| Parameter | Example | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Coin name | ExampleCoin | Branding, UI, documentation |
| Ticker | EXC | Units and integrations |
| P2P magic | Four new bytes | Prevents accidental cross-network traffic |
| P2P port | 19399 | Peer connectivity |
| RPC port | 19400 | Private administration |
| Address prefixes | Project-specific values | Reduces address confusion |
| Block interval | Chosen target | Confirmation speed and difficulty behavior |
| Initial subsidy | Chosen amount | Inflation and miner incentives |
| Halving interval | Chosen block count | Monetary schedule |
| Proof of work | Scrypt or reviewed alternative | Mining and security model |
| Genesis message | Project-specific text | Genesis identity and reproducibility |
| DNS seeds | Project-owned hosts | Peer discovery |
Also decide the maximum supply, difficulty-adjustment algorithm, relay and minimum-fee policy, block limits, coinbase maturity, any premine, reward recipients, and how future consensus changes will be activated. Changing these later can split the chain or alter the economic expectations of users and miners.
Step 5: Change chain parameters
The principal file is src/chainparams.cpp. It defines separate mainnet, testnet, and regtest parameter classes. Related base network settings are in src/chainparamsbase.cpp; consensus structures are in src/consensus/params.h; validation behavior is distributed through files such as src/kernel.cpp, src/main.cpp, and the validation files present in the exact v0.15 checkout.

Litecoin v0.15 mainnet uses the message-start bytes fb c0 b6 db. These identify P2P messages. Choose a different, documented four-byte value for every new network. Random selection reduces accidental collisions but is not a security boundary.
Ports
Litecoin v0.15 mainnet uses P2P port 9333; its testnet and regtest configurations use other ports, including 19335 and 19444. Choose unused P2P and RPC ports for your network. Keep them separate, firewall the RPC port, and document both in the node-operator guide. Never expose unauthenticated RPC directly to the public Internet.
Addresses and keys
The v0.15 mainnet uses Base58 prefixes including public-key address 48, script address 5, an additional script prefix 50, and private-key prefix 176. Extended public and private key prefixes are also defined in chainparams.cpp. Change every relevant prefix and test generated addresses in both the command line and GUI.

Remove Litecoin DNS seeds, fixed seed addresses, checkpoint hashes, chain transaction statistics, assume-valid data, minimum-chain-work settings, and other Litecoin-specific bootstrap assumptions. For a private network, use explicit addnode= or connect= entries. A public network needs multiple project-owned seed nodes, ideally under independent administration, plus a documented recovery plan.
Branding
Change the application name, About dialog, user-agent string, wallet and data-directory labels, icons, desktop metadata, unit display, documentation, and configuration examples. Inspect src/clientversion.cpp, src/qt/, unit files such as src/qt/bitcoinunits.cpp or their v0.15 equivalents, and packaging directories. Retain upstream attribution and do not imply official Litecoin endorsement.
Step 6: Define monetary policy and proof of work
Litecoin v0.15 sets its mainnet subsidy-halving interval to 840000 blocks. That is a Litecoin value, not a safe default. Your chosen interval, block time, initial reward, and difficulty rules determine issuance, miner incentives, chain security, and wallet calculations. Publish a supply formula such as:
total issuance = sum of every block subsidy + permitted fees
subsidy(height) = initial subsidy / 2^(floor(height / halving interval))
Apply the exact integer-rounding and terminal-subsidy behavior implemented by your code; do not rely only on a spreadsheet.
Litecoin uses Scrypt proof of work. Litecoin’s proof-of-work documentation describes parameters N=1024, r=1, and p=1, with implementation material in src/crypto/scrypt.cpp.
- Retaining Scrypt minimizes code changes and may simplify miner adaptation, but your chain competes for existing Scrypt hash power and may face specialized hardware and volatile difficulty.
- Changing the algorithm can differentiate the network or target different hardware, but requires cryptographic review, new mining software, pool support, and careful consensus testing.
Do not modify cryptographic primitives without specialist review. A low-difficulty public chain is easy to test but easy to reorganize.
Step 7: Generate a new genesis block
This is essential. A new independent blockchain must not reuse Litecoin’s genesis block. The genesis block commits to its timestamp, version, nonce, difficulty target, reward, coinbase message, Merkle root, and block hash.
For comparison, v0.15 constructs Litecoin’s mainnet genesis block from timestamp 1317972665, nonce 2084524493, bits 0x1e0ffff0, version 1, and reward 50 * COIN, asserting hash 12a765e31ffd4059bada1e25190f6e98c99d9714d334efa41a195a7e7e04bfe2. Do not copy those values into a new chain.

- Choose a timestamp and project-specific coinbase message.
- Choose the initial reward, version, and proof-of-work target.
- Build or adapt a deterministic genesis-generation utility.
- Search for a nonce satisfying the target.
- Record the hash, Merkle root, timestamp, nonce, bits, version, and reward.
- Insert them into the new chain’s parameters.
- Add assertions for the expected genesis hash and Merkle root.
- Rebuild from the pinned source commit.
- Start a clean node and confirm the first block is accepted.
- Build or run a second independent node and confirm it derives the same genesis result.
Changing only a name, timestamp, or nonce without updating and validating the entire deterministic configuration is not a complete genesis procedure.
Step 8: Rebuild and test wallets and transactions
Run unit tests after every consensus change:
make check
Then test address generation, private-key import and export, encrypted-wallet unlock, transaction signing, wallet backup and restore, rescan, reindex, coinbase maturity, fee calculation, and balance display. Do not promise Litecoin-wallet compatibility merely because the code was forked from Litecoin.
v0.15 release notes document chainstate-format changes and warn that downgrading can require -reindex-chainstate. Always back up wallet files before upgrades and document whether your project supports legacy Berkeley DB wallets.
Step 9: Launch two independent nodes
A single node can look healthy while the network is misconfigured. Create separate data directories and run two nodes built from the same pinned source and parameters. Connect them explicitly, then check:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
./src/litecoin-cli -datadir=/path/node-a getnetworkinfo
./src/litecoin-cli -datadir=/path/node-a getpeerinfo
./src/litecoin-cli -datadir=/path/node-a getblockchaininfo
./src/litecoin-cli -datadir=/path/node-a getmempoolinfo
./src/litecoin-cli -datadir=/path/node-a getblock <HASH>
Mine a block, verify that both nodes report the same best-block hash, send a transaction, mine it, and confirm the transaction and balance on both nodes. Test restart, reindex, a competing block, and a small reorganization.
Success means the nodes share the same chain name and genesis hash, establish a peer connection, relay transactions, agree on blocks, and show no checkpoint mismatch or unexpected Litecoin peers.
Step 10: Use a configuration file safely
server=1
daemon=1
listen=1
discover=1
rpcuser=CHANGE_THIS
rpcpassword=USE_A_LONG_RANDOM_SECRET
port=19399
rpcport=19400
maxconnections=32
dbcache=450
This is only a pattern. Replace the credentials with a long random secret, verify every option against the compiled v0.15 binary, and restrict RPC with firewall rules. Open the P2P port only where incoming node connections are intended. Keep the new network in a new data directory.
Step 11: Test mining and security
- Mine blocks only on regtest while developing.
- Use a private testnet with deliberately low difficulty.
- Connect an external miner through
getblocktemplate. - Test retargeting with accelerated development parameters.
- Simulate miners joining and leaving.
- Measure pool diversity, reorganization behavior, and timestamp handling.
- Publish the chain’s security assumptions before any public launch.
A new proof-of-work chain begins with little accumulated work. Hash-rate volatility, rented hash power, majority attacks, block withholding, selfish mining, empty blocks, and pool centralization are practical concerns. Mining activity proves that blocks can be produced; it does not prove that the network is economically secure or decentralized.
Recommended Free Tools
Step 12: Create a public testnet before considering mainnet
A testnet should exercise multi-machine connectivity, DNS seeds, firewall rules, wallet distribution, mining pools, explorer synchronization, upgrades, monitoring, and incident response. Operate multiple seed nodes under independent administration and provide explicit fallback peers.

For hosting, a VPS can supply compute and persistent storage, but it does not supply consensus security. Avoid putting every seed node with one provider. Use backups, snapshots, infrastructure-as-code, firewall controls, and a migration plan. A web CDN is not a substitute for P2P transport, and shared hosting is unsuitable for full nodes.
What remains before a mainnet
- Independent consensus review and security audit.
- Clean-room or reproducible builds and signed release artifacts.
- Checksums, release keys, key-rotation procedures, and compromise recovery.
- Multiple independently operated nodes and seed infrastructure.
- Mining strategy, pool software, and published security assumptions.
- Wallet backup, restore, upgrade, and rollback procedures.
- Explorer, documentation, support, and incident-response processes.
- Frozen genesis and monetary-policy parameters.
- A governance and upgrade process that cannot silently alter users’ balances.
- Jurisdiction-specific legal and tax review.
Troubleshooting
The binary builds, but the chain is still Litecoin
Check the genesis hash, magic bytes, ports, seeds, fixed peers, checkpoints, address prefixes, user-agent, and data directory. A renamed executable is not a new blockchain.
Nodes disagree on the best block
Likely causes include different source commits, consensus parameters, genesis values, or stale chainstate. Stop both nodes, verify the build commit, remove only the new chain’s data directory, and resynchronize from the same genesis.

Berkeley DB causes build or wallet errors
Use the expected Berkeley DB 4.8 environment for wallet compatibility, build with --disable-wallet for a walletless node, or deliberately use --with-incompatible-bdb while documenting that wallet portability may be lost.
Mining works on regtest but not testnet
Regtest has special development behavior. Confirm the target network, RPC endpoint, algorithm, target, coinbase address, peer connectivity, and getblocktemplate output using the actual forked binary.
The node connects to Litecoin
Inspect magic bytes, seeds, fixed peers, ports, and getpeerinfo. Remove copied Litecoin bootstrap data and start with a clean data directory.
Bottom line
Forking Litecoin v0.15 can teach you how a UTXO cryptocurrency works, and it can produce a controlled development network. The minimum credible workflow is: pin the historical source, build and test the unmodified client, define consensus rules, change every network identity field, generate a reproducible genesis block, run two clean nodes, test wallets and mining, and operate a public testnet before discussing mainnet.
