Yes, T-Mobile’s free student hotspot program is real—but it is not available to every student. Project 10Million is designed primarily for eligible K–12 student households. Approved families can receive one T-Mobile hotspot and an annual data allowance for up to five years.
There is an important current-data discrepancy: T-Mobile’s main program page says 100GB per year, while its direct-to-parent support page says 200GB per year. Check the allowance shown in your application, approval message, and account rather than relying on an old article or social-media post.
What T-Mobile Project 10Million provides
Project 10Million is T-Mobile’s official program to help close the homework gap. It is generally intended for households with eligible K–12 students, rather than being a universal student discount or a free benefit for all college students.

Who qualifies?
The current direct-to-parent support page identifies qualifying participation in programs including:
- Community Eligibility Provision (CEP)
- Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR)
- Medicaid
- National School Lunch Program (NSLP)
- Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP/EBT)
The main Project 10Million page also references other qualifying government or student-support circumstances, including TANF and Head Start. Because T-Mobile’s public pages do not present identical eligibility lists, use the live application and current eligibility page as the final authority.
Documentation generally must show participation within the previous year. A student ID or proof of school enrollment alone should not be assumed to qualify; the household’s participation in an accepted assistance or meal program is central to the application.

Important eligibility exceptions
- College students: A college or graduate student is not automatically eligible for Project 10Million. T-Mobile has a separate college-student discount page, but that is a paid wireless-plan offer, not proof of a free hotspot for every college student.
- Multiple children: The support page describes one data line per household, not one hotspot per child.
- Current T-Mobile customers: Existing T-Mobile, Metro by T-Mobile, and Assurance Wireless customers may qualify if they meet the program requirements.
- Non-T-Mobile customers: A current T-Mobile phone plan is not required.
- Location: The support page lists the United States and Puerto Rico but excludes Alaska, American Samoa, Guam, and the Northern Mariana Islands. Availability may also vary by state or program year.
What documents should you prepare?
Prepare a clear, current document that matches the program selected in your application. Depending on your circumstances, this could include:
- An NSLP or free- or reduced-price-meal approval notice
- SNAP/EBT eligibility documentation
- Medicaid eligibility documentation
- A school or district document showing CEP participation
- FDPIR documentation
- Another document specifically accepted by the live application form
Check that the document is dated within the required period, readable, properly signed or dated when applicable, and consistent with the names and student information on the application. Expired, incomplete, blurry, or mismatched records can delay or prevent approval.

- Open the Project 10Million application page.
- Apply as the parent or guardian of an eligible student, following the form’s current instructions.
- Select the qualifying program used to verify eligibility.
- Submit the requested information and upload acceptable proof.
- Check that names, dates, and student details match your documentation.
- Wait for T-Mobile’s eligibility decision and device-order confirmation.
- If approved, track the hotspot shipment. T-Mobile’s main FAQ estimates delivery at approximately three to five business days after approval or ordering, but this is not a guarantee.
Apply only through T-Mobile’s official pages. A website asking you to pay a fee or provide banking details to unlock a supposedly free T-Mobile hotspot is a warning sign.
How much data is included? T-Mobile’s pages conflict
As of August 18, 2026, T-Mobile’s public pages give different answers:

Both descriptions refer to an annual allowance. “100GB” does not mean 100GB every month, and “200GB” does not mean 200GB every month. The support page says the allowance replenishes on the anniversary of hotspot activation.
Because T-Mobile’s pages conflict, verify the amount assigned to your specific line in your approval confirmation, account, and current program terms. If one source says 100GB and another says 200GB, save screenshots and ask T-Mobile to confirm the allowance before buying extra data.
What happens after approval?
The hotspot should arrive with a quick-start guide. To set it up:

- Turn it on and wait for it to connect to T-Mobile’s network.
- Find the Wi-Fi name and password on the device, label, or included guide.
- Connect one laptop, tablet, or phone first to confirm service.
- Connect additional devices only as needed.
- Create or link a T-Mobile ID so you can manage the line and monitor usage.
Place the hotspot near a window or in a location with stronger T-Mobile reception. If your device supports it, change the default Wi-Fi password. Keep in mind that operating-system updates, cloud backups, app updates, game downloads, and video streaming can consume the allowance quickly.

How to check the remaining data
T-Mobile’s current instructions direct users to http://t-mo.co/P10MWelcome:
- Open the link.
- Sign in with your T-Mobile ID.
- Complete account verification if prompted.
- Review usage and account messages.
T-Mobile can change account URLs and menu labels. If the link no longer works, use the welcome email or the current Project 10Million support page rather than a copied instruction from an older article.
What if the free data runs out?
The current support page lists an additional 10GB pass for $10. However, older FAQ material lists a different option—4GB for $15 for 30 days. The available offer may depend on the account or program version, so check the pass displayed inside your account before purchasing.
Before buying extra data, reduce consumption where possible:
- Set video services to standard or low definition.
- Turn off video autoplay.
- Disable automatic app and operating-system downloads over cellular data.
- Pause cloud photo and file backups while using the hotspot.
- Download school videos and large files over fixed Wi-Fi when available.
- Connect only the devices needed for schoolwork.
- Review usage weekly instead of waiting until the allowance is exhausted.
What the hotspot can—and cannot—replace
Project 10Million can provide important schoolwork connectivity, but it is not necessarily an unlimited home-internet replacement. T-Mobile says Project 10Million customers may receive lower speeds during congestion because of data prioritization, and video typically streams at DVD quality, or 480p.
Actual performance depends on T-Mobile coverage at your address, indoor signal strength, congestion, the number of connected devices, and what those devices are doing. The annual allowance can disappear quickly through HD or 4K video, gaming downloads and patches, cloud synchronization, frequent video conferencing, or use by several people at once.

Do not assume the program includes a particular hotspot model, 5G speeds, unlimited simultaneous connections, or service suitable for gaming and 4K streaming. A school, library, campus, or district hotspot may be a useful supplement when large downloads or heavier use would exceed the annual allowance.

College students: what applies?
If “student” means a K–12 child in a qualifying household, Project 10Million may be relevant. If it means a college or graduate student, do not assume the free program applies solely because of enrollment.
T-Mobile separately advertises savings for college and graduate students at t-mobile.com/cell-phone-plans/student-discounts. Those offers involve paid wireless plans and should not be confused with Project 10Million. A college student should check the current student-plan terms, ask the school about district or campus connectivity assistance, and use the Project 10Million application only if the household independently meets its eligibility requirements.
Troubleshooting common problems
Application rejected or delayed
- Confirm that the student and household meet the current K–12 and qualifying-program requirements.
- Check whether the proof is within the required date range.
- Submit a clearer or newer document if the original is incomplete or unreadable.
- Make sure the applicant’s name matches the eligibility record.
- Check whether service is currently available in your state or area.
- Contact T-Mobile through the official Project 10Million support route. Do not submit contradictory duplicate applications unless T-Mobile tells you to.
- Ask the school district whether it distributes Project 10Million hotspots directly; district-based availability can differ from direct-to-parent enrollment.
Hotspot will not activate
- Charge the device and restart it.
- Move it to a location with better reception.
- Confirm that airplane mode is off.
- Check the Wi-Fi name and password carefully.
- Test with a second device.
- Review the account for activation, suspension, or eligibility messages.
- For Project 10Million care, T-Mobile’s FAQ lists 1-877-PRJ-10MN.
Data amount does not match the website
Save screenshots of the account and approval email, note the date, and ask T-Mobile to confirm the allowance and reset date attached to your specific line. Do not purchase an extra pass until you understand which allowance applies.
Bottom line
T-Mobile’s Project 10Million is a legitimate way for qualifying K–12 households to receive a free hotspot and annual mobile data for up to five years. It is not a universal college-student benefit, not unlimited home broadband, and not necessarily one hotspot per child.
