On an eligible order from a VAT-marketplace such as Amazon.co.uk, start at Your Orders: open the dispatched order, select Invoice or View invoice, then print or download the document. If it was sold by a Marketplace seller and no invoice appears, request one from that seller. Amazon’s labels and tax documents vary by marketplace, seller and order type; an Amazon.com purchase will usually involve a sales-tax document rather than a UK/EU-style VAT invoice.
Download an invoice from Your Orders
These steps describe the Amazon.co.uk-style process; other Amazon marketplaces may use different labels or options.
- Sign in to the same Amazon account and marketplace used for the purchase.
- Open Account & Lists or Your Account, then choose Your Orders.
- Find the order. If it is not in the current list, adjust the order-history filter.
- Open Invoice or View invoice. For eligible orders, the invoice is generally available after dispatch.
- Choose Print Invoice or Download Invoice, if offered. If it opens as a web page, use your browser’s print command and select “Save as PDF.”
- Save the file with a useful name and check the seller and tax details before submitting it for bookkeeping or reimbursement.
Amazon’s UK invoice instructions describe the Your Orders route and the distinction between an invoice and an order summary. An order summary or payment confirmation can be evidence of a purchase, but it is not automatically a VAT invoice.
Using the Amazon app
In the app, open Your Orders, choose the order and look for Invoice, View invoice, Order details or a download option. The app’s available controls vary. If you cannot find the document, try Amazon in a mobile or desktop browser and follow the steps above. Amazon specifically says its UK Prime-receipt download route is available on a computer, not in the mobile app.

Check who sold the item
The seller shown on the order determines where to look for the invoice. Being shipped by Amazon does not by itself mean Amazon sold the item or issued its VAT invoice.

For Marketplace orders, Amazon’s UK guidance says an invoice may be available when Amazon issued it or the seller uses the relevant Amazon tax-calculation arrangement. Otherwise, request it from the seller. Amazon describes a two-business-day response in its stated UK request workflow; treat that as marketplace-specific guidance, not a universal deadline. Request a VAT invoice from a Marketplace seller
Open the order and select Request Invoice if available. If it is not, use the seller-contact or order-support option associated with that order. You can adapt this message:

Please include the invoice number and date, seller’s legal details, item description, net amount, VAT rate and amount, and total. Thank you.
Provide only the information reasonably needed to prepare the invoice; do not send payment-card details. A VAT number supplied after the purchase does not automatically change the tax treatment of that completed transaction. If a third-party seller is the invoicing party, Amazon customer service may be able to help with the order or escalation, but do not assume Amazon can create the seller’s tax document.

If the invoice option is missing
- The order has not dispatched: Wait until dispatch and check again. Amazon says eligible invoices generally become available after dispatch.
- It is a Marketplace order: Use Request Invoice or contact the seller through Amazon. If the seller does not respond, follow up through the order and then contact Amazon support about the seller’s response; support may not be able to issue the invoice on the seller’s behalf.
- You see only an order summary: It may prove payment or purchase, but check whether it contains the details required for a VAT invoice. Ask the seller for the proper document if necessary.
- It was a gift order: Amazon’s UK help guidance directs buyers who need a VAT invoice for a gift order to contact Amazon.
- It is an old order: Amazon’s UK instructions note special handling for orders dispatched before 1 July 2013. That date is specific to the UK help guidance, not a general cutoff for all marketplaces.
- You may be in the wrong account or marketplace: Check the account and country site used to place the order, especially for cross-border purchases.
- The document names the wrong business: Ask the issuing seller whether it can correct the invoice. Updating account details after purchase may not change who legally bought the item, and you should not edit the document yourself.
Amazon Business and bulk invoices
For businesses that buy regularly, Amazon Business can make invoice discovery and purchasing controls easier. On supported marketplaces, offers may display a Downloadable VAT Invoice indicator; Amazon Business also describes VAT-invoice policies and bulk retrieval through Business Analytics. These features do not guarantee an invoice for every offer: some sellers still need to be asked. See Amazon Business’s VAT guidance.
Amazon Business help describes downloading up to 2,000 invoices at a time from Order Reports using Download order documents in the documented flow. Treat that limit and the exact menu path as subject to marketplace and account availability; labels may differ. An Amazon Business account can help manage future purchases, but creating one does not retroactively guarantee a VAT invoice for an earlier personal-account order.

Prime, digital, split and refunded orders
- Prime membership: Amazon UK’s separate desktop route is My Amazon Prime → Update your payment method → View all printable receipts → select the relevant receipt → View Receipt. The account may call it a receipt or invoice; do not assume it shows reclaimable VAT.
- Digital orders or subscriptions: Check the digital order or billing details rather than assuming the physical-goods invoice route applies. Amazon’s EU Business API documentation excludes digital orders from the invoice-document workflow it describes; that is an API-specific limitation, not proof that every user-facing digital purchase lacks a document.
- Split shipments or multiple sellers: Check each order, seller and shipment document. One checkout can involve more than one invoice.
- Refunds or partial refunds: Keep the invoice and any credit note, refund record or adjustment. Confirm that the documents together reflect the final amount charged.
- Cross-border purchase: Check which seller issued the invoice and where tax was charged. Marketplace, ship-from location, destination and customer type can affect tax treatment.
Is the document a VAT invoice?
Requirements differ by jurisdiction and transaction. For a VAT-accounting claim, check the document against the rules where the VAT was charged. Depending on the transaction, relevant details may include:
- Seller’s legal name and address, and VAT registration number where required.
- Invoice number and invoice date.
- Buyer details where required.
- Item or service description, quantity, and transaction date.
- Net amount, applicable VAT rate, VAT amount and gross total.
- Any credit note or adjustment for a return, refund or price change.
A document labelled “Invoice” is not automatically sufficient for VAT recovery. Likewise, a zero VAT amount does not explain itself: there may have been no VAT charged, a particular cross-border or reverse-charge treatment, an exempt transaction, or a document that is not a VAT invoice. Do not infer the reason from the amount alone or change the document yourself.
Can you reclaim the VAT?
Getting a document and being entitled to recover the VAT are separate questions. Recovery can depend on the buyer’s VAT status, the invoice’s legal details, the transaction, and local rules. A VAT number on your Amazon account does not automatically make every purchase VAT-free or recoverable. If the invoice is incomplete, VAT is zero, the buyer name is wrong, or the purchase crossed a border, ask the seller for clarification and check with the relevant tax authority or your accountant before claiming.

A purchase made on Amazon.com will ordinarily involve a U.S. order invoice or sales-tax record, not a UK/EU-style VAT invoice. If a U.S. buyer purchased through Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.de or another VAT marketplace, the applicable document and tax treatment depend on that marketplace and transaction. For imported goods, customs or import-VAT records may also be relevant. Do not assume that a foreign marketplace invoice creates a recoverable VAT claim in the buyer’s home country.
