How to Create an Online Store: A Practical Step-by-Step Guide

Some links on this page are affiliate links: if you buy through them we may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you.

To create an online store, choose a product and customer, validate that people will pay for it, select a platform that fits your skills and budget, then configure products, payments, taxes, shipping, policies and support. Before you announce the store, place a test order and confirm that the entire path—from checkout to delivery and refund—works. The website is only one part of the business: pricing, fulfillment costs, legal obligations and customer service determine whether a launch is ready to take real orders.

1. Decide what to sell and who will buy it

Start with a specific offer, not a theme or a long product list. Define the likely buyer, what problem the product solves, what alternatives they use now and why they would trust your business. A store aimed at “everyone” is harder to price, explain and promote than one built for a clearly defined use case.

Product type changes the work involved. Physical goods require inventory or supplier coordination, shipping and returns. Digital products need reliable delivery and access management. Services may need appointment scheduling; subscriptions need recurring billing and cancellation workflows. Personalized, regulated, age-restricted, hazardous or perishable products may also require specific payment, labeling, shipping or legal checks. Confirm the platform and payment provider support your product before committing to them.

Test demand before investing heavily

Look at competing listings, prices, delivery promises and customer reviews. Recurring complaints can reveal an unmet need, but a gap in the market is not proof that buyers will pay. Talk with likely customers, test a landing page or preorder, sell a small batch manually, or try a limited marketplace listing. Treat clicks, likes and search interest as signs of attention—not sales evidence. Paid orders and repeat requests provide stronger evidence of demand.

Check whether the economics work

Estimate contribution margin for each order, not just the difference between product cost and selling price:

Selling price − product cost − packaging − payment fees − platform fees − shipping subsidy − fulfillment cost − expected returns or refunds − advertising cost = contribution margin

Use actual package dimensions and representative delivery destinations when estimating shipping. If the margin is thin before advertising, returns or fees, reconsider the price, product, packaging or fulfillment method before scaling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Choose how you will make and fulfill orders

Model Potential advantages Trade-offs to plan for
Hold inventory More control over quality, packaging and fulfillment; stock can be shipped promptly. Requires upfront capital, storage and forecasts; unsold stock ties up money.
Dropshipping Less money tied up in inventory; suppliers handle some fulfillment. Less control over quality and delivery; supplier stock can be out of date. You remain responsible for customer complaints and returns.
Print-on-demand Useful for designs and personalized merchandise without holding finished stock. Per-item cost may be high, quality varies, and delivery can be slower. Set clear expectations for personalized-item returns.
Digital products No physical stock; delivery can be automated and immediate. Plan for unauthorized sharing, access problems, refunds and keeping the product useful or current.
Third-party fulfillment A provider stores and ships goods, which can support higher order volume. Storage, pick-and-pack and integration costs add up; packaging and exception handling may be less under your control.

For each model, decide who handles stock counts, packaging, delivery updates, damaged parcels, lost shipments and returns. With suppliers or fulfillment partners, establish how quickly stock and order status update; a storefront cannot reliably sell inventory it does not know is unavailable.

3. Pick an ecommerce platform that fits the business

For a first store, a hosted platform is often the simpler route: hosting, SSL, checkout and core administration are bundled, though subscriptions, transaction charges and add-ons still affect cost. Shopify says its online store requires Basic or higher and its plans include hosting, SSL and a custom-domain connection (Shopify online-store documentation; Shopify pricing). WooCommerce is an open-source option built on WordPress; it offers more control over hosting and extensions but leaves more maintenance decisions to the merchant (WooCommerce documentation).

Option Good fit Cost and operational considerations
Shopify Beginners who want a managed store, integrated administration and room to add channels or apps. The official page lists US Basic at $29/month billed yearly or $39 month to month, Grow at $79/month billed yearly, Advanced at $299/month billed yearly and Plus from $2,300/month. Listed online card rates start at 2.9% + 30¢ USD on Basic; third-party transaction fees, when applicable, vary by plan. Prices, rates and eligibility vary by country and can change. Verify the current terms for your business at Shopify pricing.
WooCommerce WordPress users, content-heavy sites and merchants needing customization or control over providers. Core software may not have a license fee, but hosting, domain, security, backups, updates, themes, extensions, payment processing and technical help can cost money. Setup documentation covers store details, products, payments, shipping and taxes (setup wizard; build an online store).
Wix Small or straightforward catalogs, service businesses adding products, and owners who want site design and commerce together. Plan pricing depends on location; Wix says the final price appears before purchase. Do not treat a localized displayed price, including one shown with GST, as a universal US price. Check Wix plans. Its setup guide covers products, shipping, tax, payments and checkout (Wix Stores setup).
BigCommerce Merchants with growing catalogs, more built-in commerce needs or B2B requirements to evaluate. The official page lists Core at $39/month or $29/month billed annually, Growth at $105/month or $79 annually, Scale at $399/month or $299 annually, and Performance from $1,499/month billed annually. Sales-volume thresholds can trigger plan changes, and fees may apply for some open payment providers. Check current terms at BigCommerce pricing.
Amazon marketplace Sellers testing demand or seeking marketplace discovery for products suited to Amazon. Amazon lists its Professional selling plan at $39.99/month plus selling fees; eligible Professional sellers can create a Brand Store at no additional charge. This is a marketplace model, not a standalone-store subscription. See Amazon Brand Stores.

Choose by required workflow, not popularity or the appearance of a demo theme. Consider product type, catalog size, technical support, payment availability, integrations, shipping complexity, content needs, sales channels and the difficulty of moving later. Check what you can export—products, orders, customer records, content, URLs, reviews and subscription data—before building deeply around one platform.

Hosted versus self-hosted

  • Hosted: faster setup and less server maintenance, in exchange for recurring fees, platform limits and possible app or transaction costs.
  • Self-hosted: more control over hosting and customization, in exchange for responsibility for updates, security, backups, performance and plugin compatibility.

Do not choose WooCommerce solely because its core software can be free. Do not assume a hosted plan’s monthly price is the full cost of selling. Compare the total cost of the setup you actually need.

Decide whether to start on a marketplace

A marketplace can help test a product or reach shoppers already browsing there, but brings platform fees, competition and rules you do not control. It does not provide the same branded experience or control over the customer relationship as your own storefront. A marketplace and a branded store can work together if stock, orders, prices and policies stay synchronized; otherwise, overselling and mismatched customer expectations become likely.

4. Budget for startup and ongoing costs

There is no universal cost to start a store. Make a budget using the costs that apply to your product and sales plan rather than relying on a “free store” claim.

Cost category Examples How to budget
Fixed or recurring Platform subscription, domain, hosting if self-hosted, theme, apps or plugins, email marketing, accounting, tax or inventory software. Separate required tools from optional ones; record billing frequency and renewal terms.
Per order Product, packaging, payment processing, platform or marketplace fees, fulfillment and shipping. Estimate against realistic order values, package sizes and delivery zones.
Risk and growth Returns, refunds, chargebacks, advertising, professional services, duties or reshipments. Allow for these before treating projected revenue as money available to spend.

WooCommerce’s pricing page is a reminder to distinguish core software from the expenses of running a working store. Amazon’s stated $39.99 monthly Professional plan is likewise only one part of marketplace selling cost; selling fees also apply (Amazon Brand Stores). Do not compare those models as though each monthly figure buys the same thing.

5. Choose a business name and domain

Choose a name that is easy to say, spell and remember. Check whether a suitable domain and, where practical, matching social handles are available. Avoid names that are easily confused with existing businesses. Search relevant trademark records before investing in packaging or advertising; an available domain is not evidence that a name is legally clear. For a commercially important name, get professional advice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the public-facing store name distinct in your records from the legal entity name if they differ. Enter accurate legal business and contact details in the platform and payment account. Shopify says a merchant can connect an existing domain or move it to Shopify; hosting is included with its plans (Shopify pricing).

  • 【Widely Use Range】The JRHC Handheld USB barcode scanner can be used in supermarkets, convenience stores, warehouse, library, bookstore, drugstore, retail shop for file management, inventory tracking and POS(point of sale), etc.

6. Build the catalog and store pages

Make product pages answer the buyer’s questions

For each product, provide a clear title, main benefit, plain-language description, specifications, price, stock status, variants, dimensions or weight where relevant, materials or ingredients, delivery estimate, return eligibility, and care or use instructions. Add a SKU or another consistent internal identifier to support inventory and fulfillment.

Use photos to show scale, several angles, details, the product in use and packaging if it affects the purchase. Show meaningful differences in color or size and disclose limitations or imperfections a reasonable buyer would want to know. Add descriptive alt text for images. A customer who cannot tell what is included, whether an item fits or when it may arrive is more likely to abandon the purchase or return it.

Use variants for meaningful options such as size or color; make a separate product for a materially different model when that makes comparison clearer. Bundles, add-ons and subscriptions should be represented in a way that keeps price and stock accurate. Confusing structures can produce incorrect inventory, prices or fulfillment instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make the store easy to navigate

Most stores need a home page, shop or category pages, product pages, About, Contact, shipping and delivery, returns and refunds, privacy, terms, and a way to get order help. An FAQ can answer recurring questions. Provide account or order-status features if the platform supports them and the business needs them.

Navigation should help a visitor identify what you sell, who it is for, the price, delivery expectations, what happens if they change their mind and how to contact you. Do not assume buyers arrive through the home page: search results, social posts and emails often lead directly to a category or product page. Use a fast, legible, mobile-friendly theme; elaborate animation is not a substitute for useful product information.

7. Configure payments, taxes and delivery

Payments and checkout

Before accepting orders, connect a processor available to your business and product category. Compare supported countries and currencies, card and wallet options, payout timing, refunds, recurring billing, dispute processes, fraud tools, fees and possible reserves or account holds. Providers and payment methods vary by platform and geography. WooCommerce documentation names Stripe, Square, PayPal and Amazon Pay among possible providers, subject to availability and eligibility (WooCommerce build-an-online-store guide).

Keep checkout as straightforward as the platform permits, but test rather than assume a particular feature works for your buyers. Confirm guest checkout, address entry, shipping and tax calculations, coupon codes, wallet payments, failed payments, confirmation emails, inventory changes, cancellations and refunds.

Sales tax and other tax obligations

For US sellers, sales-tax responsibilities depend on facts such as business location, inventory locations, destinations, economic nexus, product taxability, buyer exemptions and marketplace sales. Shopify identifies origin, destination, registration status, product taxability and buyer exemptions as factors in US tax calculations (Shopify US taxes; US tax regulations).

Tax calculation is not the same as registering, filing or remitting. Do not assume the platform handles every obligation automatically; determine which jurisdictions require registration and who is responsible for filings and payments. Rules differ by state and product. International sales can raise separate VAT, GST, customs and duty questions. Use official tax authorities or a qualified tax professional for your circumstances. WooCommerce also cautions that its tax material is not tax, legal or accounting advice (WooCommerce build-an-online-store guide).

Shipping, pickup and fulfillment

Define shipping zones, methods and rates, handling time, delivery estimates, package dimensions, local pickup or delivery, international exclusions, and procedures for lost or damaged parcels. Decide how to handle PO boxes, remote locations, address corrections, split shipments, backorders and preorders. Wix’s setup guide includes shipping, local delivery and pickup; Shopify’s checklist also covers shipping, pickup, local delivery, taxes and payments (Wix store setup; Shopify store checklist).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a pricing approach deliberately:

  • Flat rate: simple for buyers, but can overcharge some orders or leave you subsidizing others.
  • Carrier-calculated or weight-based rates: can better reflect delivery costs, but require accurate product and package data.
  • Free shipping: the merchant still pays; account for it in price or margin rather than treating it as costless.
  • Local pickup or delivery: useful where operationally practical, but specify areas, timing and handoff instructions.

Test a typical address from each major delivery zone and compare the checkout result with what the business will actually pay. A shipping promise is part of the product offer, not a detail to improvise after checkout.

8. Publish policies and prepare customer support

Write policies that match what the business can actually do. Cover the return window, refund method, exchanges, final-sale exclusions, damaged items, lost packages, cancellation rules, warranties and delivery estimates. Provide a support contact and a realistic response-time expectation. Explain privacy and data use in the applicable policy pages.

Requirements depend on location, business structure, product and sales activity; a generic template cannot settle every legal issue. Product labeling, health claims, privacy, accessibility, consumer protections, copyright and trademark use may need specific review. Consult a qualified professional for consequential or regulated matters. Business-license requirements also vary; Shopify notes they depend on location and what is being sold (Shopify guide to starting an online store).

9. Test the complete order before launch

Do not stop at previewing the home page. Run through the actual customer and merchant workflow on a phone and computer. Shopify’s checklist includes testing before opening the store (Shopify store checklist).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open product pages on mobile and desktop. Check images, descriptions, variants, prices, availability, delivery details and buttons.
  2. Place a test order using guest checkout if offered. Try different variants, a coupon, a wallet if enabled, and addresses in relevant shipping zones.
  3. Check totals, shipping and tax for destinations that reflect your configuration. Investigate unexpected amounts rather than assuming the platform is correct.
  4. Test a failed or declined payment if the platform permits it. Verify that no duplicate order is created and that the buyer receives a clear message.
  5. Confirm that a successful order produces the expected confirmation email, reduces the right inventory and appears correctly in the merchant’s order system.
  6. Process a cancellation and refund. Confirm what the customer sees and how the payment and stock records change.
  7. Fulfill an order using the actual packing, label, pickup or digital-delivery process. Check tracking or access instructions from the customer’s perspective.
  8. Verify that support contact details work, analytics receive the events you need and the live domain uses SSL.

Before opening publicly, remove test products and orders, placeholder copy and test discounts; check that the store is not password-protected and that the domain points to the live site. For a low-volume launch, place a genuine low-value order if appropriate and monitor it from payment through fulfillment.

10. Launch with a focused customer-acquisition plan

Choose a primary way to reach likely buyers rather than launching on every channel at once. Depending on the product and audience, that could mean an existing customer list, useful search content, organic social posts, paid search or social tests, creators, affiliate partners, a marketplace listing, local sales or partnerships. A small, measured campaign makes it easier to identify what is working and whether each order can be fulfilled profitably.

Make sure product pages and support are ready for the traffic source. A compelling post may bring visitors, but unclear specifications, unexpected shipping charges, weak trust signals or a broken mobile checkout can still prevent a sale. Do not treat a traffic increase as proof that the store is healthy.

11. Measure results and improve the bottleneck

Track sessions, product views, add-to-cart rate, checkout starts and completions, conversion rate, average order value, contribution margin, customer acquisition cost, refunds, repeat purchases, email signups, revenue by channel, fulfillment time and support contacts per order. Define where each figure comes from and review it consistently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the pattern in the funnel to choose the next change. If relevant visitors are scarce, investigate discovery and marketing. If product views do not lead to carts, review the offer, price, photos and information. If carts fail at checkout, inspect shipping surprises, payment options, errors and mobile usability. If orders sell but contribute little, revisit acquisition cost, shipping subsidy, returns, fees and pricing before spending more to grow.

Add apps or plugins only to solve a defined problem the platform cannot handle natively. Each can introduce subscription costs, slower pages, conflicting scripts, checkout issues, data concerns and future maintenance. Before installing one, understand its expected benefit, test it safely, and know how to export its data and remove it.
