To stop a PayPal subscription, cancel it in two places: first with the merchant, then in PayPal under Settings → Payments → Subscriptions and saved businesses or Automatic Payments. Select the merchant, choose Cancel, confirm, and save the evidence. PayPal cancellation normally stops future payments under that specific agreement; it does not automatically cancel the merchant contract or refund a payment that has already completed.
These instructions are for U.S. personal PayPal accounts reviewed August 18, 2026. Labels can differ by region, account, app version, or interface experiment.
Identify what you are actually cancelling
“A PayPal subscription” can describe several different things:
- PayPal automatic payment: PayPal’s authorization for a merchant to charge automatically. PayPal may also call this a billing agreement, recurring payment, reference transaction, preauthorized transfer, or preapproved payment.
- Merchant subscription: The membership, software plan, streaming service, delivery plan, or free trial you agreed to with the seller.
- Completed transaction: A payment that has already been processed. Cancelling autopay does not reverse it.
- Pending transaction: A payment already initiated but not yet completed. It may still finish.
- Unauthorized transaction: A payment you did not authorize, which follows a dispute and account-security process.
- Merchant-direct billing: A subscription managed by the merchant, Apple, Google, or another platform even though PayPal was used as a funding source.

Cancel a PayPal subscription on the website
- Sign in by typing PayPal.com yourself. Do not use a link or phone number in a suspicious renewal message.
- Open Settings.
- Select Payments.
- Open Subscriptions and saved businesses or Automatic Payments. PayPal currently uses both labels.
- Select the merchant.
- Choose Cancel or Cancel automatic payment, then confirm.
- Save the confirmation page or email, including the merchant name and cancellation date.
Use PayPal’s help page for automatic payments and unauthorized transactions if the control is missing.
Cancel in the PayPal app
App navigation is less consistent. Open Menu or Accounts and look for Subscriptions, Subscriptions and saved businesses, Automatic Payments, or Linked Businesses. Open the merchant and select Cancel, Cancel this autopay, or Remove/Unlink PayPal as your payment method.
If you cannot find the entry, use the website procedure. A missing item in one app menu does not prove that no billing relationship exists.

Cancel with the merchant as well
PayPal cancellation stops its authorization; it may not terminate your service contract. Sign in to the merchant’s website or app, use its cancellation page, or contact official support. Send this message:

I am cancelling my subscription effective immediately and revoking authorization for future recurring charges. Please confirm the cancellation date, that no further payments will be taken, and whether any final balance is due.
Keep a copy of the message, the merchant’s reply, screenshots, support-ticket numbers, and any cancellation confirmation. The CFPB likewise recommends written follow-up and retaining records.
What happens to charges already made?
Authorized but unwanted renewal
Contact the seller immediately for a refund; PayPal generally directs users to the seller for refunds of completed payments. Include the transaction date, cancellation time, and proof. If billing continued after a valid cancellation or violated the stated terms, ask your card issuer or bank about a dispute. The FTC recommends keeping cancellation records and disputing continued charges.

Open the transaction details. If PayPal shows Cancel, use it promptly. If no such option appears, contact the seller and PayPal. A subscription cancellation does not necessarily stop a payment already initiated; PayPal’s agreement says some sellers can take up to 30 days to complete a transaction.

Truly unauthorized payment
First check whether a family member used the account, the merchant name differs from the brand, a trial ended, or another PayPal account was used. If you still did not authorize it:
- Open PayPal’s Resolution Center.
- Select Report a problem and choose the payment.
- Select I want to report unauthorized activity and follow the instructions.
PayPal says it will email an investigation update within 10 days after a report. Change your password, enable two-factor authentication where available, review activity and automatic payments, and remove unfamiliar payment methods. Use only PayPal’s official Help Center contact details.
If PayPal keeps charging you
- Cancel the merchant subscription and PayPal automatic payment again, saving proof.
- Contact the merchant through its known official website and request written confirmation.
- Contact PayPal through the Help Center or Resolution Center, providing transaction IDs and evidence.
- If a bank account or card is charged again, notify the bank or issuer promptly and ask about dispute and stop-payment procedures.
- For deceptive trial or renewal practices, consider reporting the conduct to the FTC or your state attorney general.
For bank-account debits, the CFPB advises telling both the company and your bank that authorization is revoked, following up in writing, and asking about stop-payment orders. Fees may apply, and stopping payment does not erase an underlying contract or debt.
Why removing a card is not enough
Removing a card, changing PayPal’s general preferred method, emptying your balance, or closing your account is not a reliable substitute for cancelling the agreement. An automatic-payment agreement can have its own preferred method and a backup method. Unlinking a payment method may not affect an already authorized transaction, dispute, claim, or pending activity. A declined payment may also be retried or redirected to another funding source.

The three-business-day timing rule
PayPal’s U.S. User Agreement says a personal-account user may cancel a recurring automatic payment at least three business days before the next scheduled payment through account settings, the Help Center, or PayPal customer service. This is a U.S.-specific agreement provision, not a universal rule or automatic refund guarantee. Weekends and applicable holidays are excluded, and acting earlier is safer. The rule concerns stopping the automatic payment, not cancelling the merchant contract or refunding a previous charge. See the PayPal U.S. User Agreement.
If the subscription is not listed
Search PayPal transaction history for the exact merchant name and open the transaction details. Then search every email inbox for the original receipt, inspect the merchant’s billing page, and check Apple App Store or Google Play subscriptions if you signed up in a mobile app. The charge may belong to another PayPal account, a linked business, a different billing agreement, or a merchant-direct arrangement. Contact the merchant and PayPal, and continue monitoring your statements.
Prevention checklist
- Read trial, renewal, price, and cancellation terms before signing up.
- Record the trial end and first full-price billing dates in a calendar.
- Review PayPal automatic payments and bank/card statements monthly.
- Save cancellation instructions and confirmations.
- Consider a dedicated payment method for recurring services.
- Never call a number or click a link in a suspicious renewal notice; use the company’s known official website.
- Keep transaction IDs, screenshots, emails, and later statements until the matter is resolved.

Does removing my card stop recurring payments?
No. Backup methods, existing authorizations, and merchant-direct billing can still matter.
What if I do not recognize the charge?
Check automatic payments, merchant naming, family purchases, and expired trials. If it remains unauthorized, report it through PayPal’s Resolution Center and secure your account.
Can I cancel a pending PayPal payment?
Only if PayPal displays a cancellation option. Otherwise contact the seller and PayPal immediately.
The Bottom Line
Cancel both the merchant service and the specific PayPal automatic-payment agreement, save proof, and monitor every funding source. Treat completed, pending, and unauthorized payments as different problems with different remedies.
