On iPhone, add a card in Wallet > Add Card and follow the issuer’s verification steps. To remove one, open Wallet, select the card, then tap More > Card Details > Remove Card. Cards are set up separately on each Apple device, so removing one from an iPhone does not automatically remove it from an Apple Watch, iPad, or Mac.

What adding or removing a card means

Apple Pay is Apple’s payment service; Apple Wallet is where you manage payment cards and other Wallet items. A card’s Wallet setup is specific to a device. Removing it from one device does not remove it from your other devices, and it does not close the bank account or cancel the physical card.

For Apple Pay transactions, Apple says the device uses a Device Account Number and a transaction-specific security code instead of sending the actual card number to the merchant. That is a description of Apple’s transaction system, not a guarantee against every kind of fraud. Apple’s security and privacy overview explains the details.

Before adding a card

You need a compatible Apple device and supported software, an Apple Account signed in on the device, and a device passcode or supported biometric authentication. Your bank or card issuer must also support Apple Pay for that card and device, and Apple Pay must be available in your country or region. Not every card from a participating network or bank is eligible; check with the issuer if you are unsure. See Apple’s setup requirements and its country and region availability page, published August 4, 2026. Availability and participating issuers can change.

Add a card to Apple Pay on iPhone

  1. Open Wallet and tap the Add Card button.
  2. Choose Cards Found For You for a card you have used before, or Debit or Credit Card to set up another card. A card listed as found is not necessarily active on this iPhone; select it and complete the setup flow.
  3. Tap Continue. Hold the card near the iPhone, scan it if prompted, or choose Enter Card Details Manually.
  4. Follow the issuer’s instructions to verify the card. The issuer may ask for more information, a verification code, security questions, or its own app. The issuer—not Apple—decides whether to approve the card.

Some banks let you start setup with an Add to Apple Wallet button in their app. That option is issuer-dependent; use it if your bank offers it. Apple documents setup, including issuer-app and verification requirements, in its Apple Pay setup guide.

Add a card to Apple Watch

An iPhone card is not automatically provisioned for Apple Pay on its paired watch. Add and verify it on the watch as well.

Using the paired iPhone

  1. Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone and tap My Watch > Wallet & Apple Pay.
  2. Tap Add Card, choose Debit or Credit Card or Cards Found For You, then tap Continue.
  3. Scan, hold near the iPhone, or enter the card details manually, then complete any issuer verification.

On the watch

On supported Apple Watch models, open Wallet, tap the More Options button, then tap Add Card. Choose a supported card type and follow the prompts, including any verification from the issuer. See the Apple Watch setup instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Add a card on iPad, Mac, or Apple Vision Pro

iPad or Apple Vision Pro

  1. Open Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay.
  2. Tap Add Card and follow the on-screen instructions.
  3. Complete any verification requested by the issuer.

Mac with Touch ID

  1. Open System Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay. On older macOS versions, open System Preferences instead.
  2. Click Add Card, follow the prompts, and complete issuer verification if requested.

A Mac without built-in Touch ID may use a compatible iPhone or Apple Watch to authorize purchases rather than setting up local Touch ID card use. On the iPhone, check Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay > Allow Payments on Mac. Capabilities depend on the Mac and its software; see Apple’s device-specific setup guidance.

Remove a card from every device

For ordinary removal, check each device separately. Review your iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad, Mac, and Vision Pro, and remove the card wherever you no longer want it available for Apple Pay. Removing it from an iPhone does not remove it from other devices, as Apple explains in its Wallet removal and device guidance.

If you sign out of your Apple Account on an iPhone, Apple says the credit and debit cards used with Apple Pay are removed from that iPhone; they can be added again after you sign back in. Signing out affects other iCloud services, so it is not the right shortcut for removing just one card.

If a device is lost or stolen

Act on the device, not just the physical card: use Find My if it was enabled, and contact the issuer if the physical card is also missing or you suspect fraud.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mark it as lost

Use Find My to put the device in Lost Mode. Apple says this suspends Apple Pay payments on that device; it does not necessarily cancel the physical card. If the device is recovered, Apple Pay can be reenabled. See Apple’s lost-device and security guidance.

Remove Wallet items remotely

From another iPhone or iPad, open Settings, tap your name, select the lost device, then tap Remove Items under Wallet & Apple Pay. From a browser, sign in to your Apple Account, open Devices, select the device, and choose Remove Items in its Wallet & Apple Pay section. See Apple’s remote removal instructions.

Erase the device or contact the issuer

Remote erasure also removes that device’s ability to make Apple Pay payments; cards can be added again if it is recovered. Contact the bank or card issuer to suspend Apple Pay use or freeze or replace a physical card that is missing or compromised. Apple notes that remote suspension of transit cards has limitations: transit cards cannot be removed or suspended remotely while the device is offline. See Apple’s security guidance.

If setup or payment is not working

The card will not add or is still pending

  1. Check that Apple Pay is supported in your region and that your issuer supports this specific card.
  2. Confirm your device and software are compatible, you are signed in to your Apple Account, and a passcode or supported authentication is enabled.
  3. If scanning fails, try manual entry.
  4. Complete any issuer verification request, including opening the issuer’s app if asked.
  5. If the issuer rejects the card or setup remains pending, contact the issuer. It controls card approval.

Disabling the device passcode is not a workaround: Apple says removing it removes payment and certain other Wallet cards from that device. The issuer and device requirements are described in Apple’s setup guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An Apple Pay payment was declined

A successfully added card can still have a transaction declined. Apple says the issuer approves or declines Apple Pay transactions, so contact the bank about the reason. Check whether the physical card is locked, expired, over its limit, or flagged for fraud, and whether the problem happens only with Apple Pay or also with the physical card. A merchant-terminal problem is different from a Wallet setup problem. Apple’s guidance is at If a payment card used with Apple Pay is declined.

Change the default instead of removing a card

If you want to keep a card but stop it being selected first, change the default on the relevant device.

  • iPhone: In Wallet, touch and hold the preferred card and drag it in front of the others.
  • Apple Watch: In the iPhone’s Apple Watch app, tap My Watch > Wallet & Apple Pay > Transaction Defaults > Default Card, then choose a card.
  • iPad or Vision Pro: Open Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay and choose a card under Transaction Defaults.
  • Mac with Touch ID: Open System Settings or System Preferences > Wallet & Apple Pay and select a default card.

Apple says the first payment card added to Wallet on a device becomes its default unless you change it. See Apple’s instructions for changing defaults.

Payment cards, transit cards, and passes are not the same

Credit and debit cards use the card-removal steps above. A pass is removed with Remove Pass; transit cards can have separate Express Mode behavior. Express Mode can let eligible transit or payment cards work without the usual unlocking or authentication flow, so consider that setting when reviewing access on a device. Apple explains it in Use Express Mode with transit cards, passes, and keys. Apple Cash is also a separate service, not an ordinary bank-issued debit card.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Removing a Wallet card does not cancel the physical card or close its underlying bank account. If the physical card is lost or compromised, contact the issuer to freeze or replace it. If you simply removed an eligible card from Wallet and want to use it again, you can try adding it again; the issuer may require verification.
