You normally cannot run two active Microsoft 365 consumer subscriptions on one Microsoft account. To reduce your bill, use the existing subscription’s Manage → Cancel subscription flow and select a lower-cost plan if Microsoft offers one. In most cases, your current plan continues until the paid term ends, then the replacement begins.
What “adding a cheaper plan” can mean
Microsoft uses different rules for several actions that can sound like “adding” a plan:
- Downgrading: moving from Family or Premium to Personal, Basic, or an account-specific lower-feature option.
- Adding the same plan: redeeming another term, which normally extends the existing expiration date.
- Changing billing frequency: moving between monthly and annual billing.
- Replacing Microsoft 365: allowing the subscription to expire and buying Office Home 2024 as a one-time license.
These choices affect billing, storage, sharing, applications and renewal differently.

No. Microsoft says a Microsoft account can have only one active Microsoft 365 for home subscription. Buying another consumer subscription does not create a second pool of OneDrive storage, device allowances or Family sharing benefits. See Microsoft’s explanation at Microsoft Support.

If you redeem the same subscription type, the time is usually added to your existing term. For example, six months remaining plus a new annual Family subscription becomes 18 months. Microsoft generally limits accumulated time to five years; exceeding that limit can produce a Redemption Failed error.
How to switch to a cheaper plan
- Open account.microsoft.com/services.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns or redeemed the subscription.
- Find your Microsoft 365 plan and select Manage.
- Check the displayed plan, renewal date and recurring-billing status.
- Select Cancel subscription.
- Read the cancellation page. If Microsoft offers a lower-cost plan or a switch option, review its features, price and start date.
- Select the replacement plan, if suitable, and complete confirmation.
- Return to the Subscriptions page and verify the plan and next renewal date.
Microsoft documents this downgrade process at Switch between Microsoft 365 subscriptions. A lower-feature plan usually begins when the current paid term expires, rather than immediately, and the displayed cancellation page controls the exact timing and charges.
What changes after a downgrade?
Billing and unused time
Do not assume a dollar-for-dollar refund. Any refund or credit depends on the purchase channel, timing and Microsoft’s current terms. The cancellation screen should show whether the existing plan remains active through its renewal date and when the new price will apply.

OneDrive storage
Family can provide up to 6 TB total, generally 1 TB per person, while Personal provides 1 TB for one person. Moving to a smaller allocation can leave an account over its new limit. Download, delete or move files before the change if necessary. Storage limits and account functionality can be affected when a paid plan expires; Microsoft’s current cancellation terms should be checked for the account’s exact situation.
Family members and sharing
Family supports one to six people with separate accounts and allocations. Personal is for one person. Anyone using your Family sharing invitation may lose those shared benefits when the owner changes to Personal or another single-user plan.
Office applications
Switching between most Microsoft 365 home plans does not require reinstalling desktop Office. The installed applications and the license that activates them are separate things. Microsoft notes that moving from Basic to another home subscription may require installing the desktop apps because Basic does not provide the same entitlement.
AI and premium features
Feature availability depends on the plan, country and account. Some subscribers may see a lower-cost or “Classic” option without newer AI benefits in the cancellation flow, but Microsoft does not promise that this offer will appear for every account. Compare the exact benefits and renewal price shown to you.

Redeem a retailer key at microsoft365.com/setup while signed in to the same account. A key for the same plan normally extends time, not storage or device allowances. A Personal key applied to an account using Family can present a choice: remain on Family with less than a full year of benefits, or convert to Personal. Read that screen before accepting.
If the account would exceed five years of subscription time, redemption can fail. Do not redeem a key until you understand whether it extends the term or changes the plan.

If the cheaper option is missing
- Turn off recurring billing: keep the current plan through its paid term, then buy the desired plan after expiration.
- Wait and purchase later: use the same account so the new plan does not land on a different subscription profile.
- Check the billing partner: subscriptions bought through Apple, Google Play or another provider may need to be canceled or changed there. The partner controls payment and often the available switching controls.
- Use a retailer key carefully: redemption may show a conversion choice rather than simply adding a year.
- Contact Microsoft Support: use support if the account switched unexpectedly, the subscription is missing or the expected offer is not displayed.

U.S. prices: annual versus monthly
The following were listed on the U.S. Microsoft Store in August 2026. Prices, taxes, promotions and regional availability can change, so verify the checkout amount.

At those standard annual prices, Personal is $30 less than Family for one account holder. Family can be cheaper per person when genuinely shared: dividing $129.99 equally among six users is about $21.67 each, although Microsoft bills the subscription owner.
Office Home 2024 was listed at $179.99 as a one-time U.S. purchase in August 2026. It is licensed for one PC or Mac, has no recurring Microsoft 365 subscription and does not include automatic entitlement to the next major release. Treat the live checkout price as authoritative.
Other ways to reduce the bill
Workplace Discount Program
Eligible employees may use Microsoft’s Workplace Discount Program. Microsoft says a qualifying purchase can add time to an existing subscription, with the discounted rate beginning at the existing annual renewal date. Eligibility and terms depend on the employer. Stop subscribing altogether
Office Home 2024 may suit someone who uses one computer, does not need subscription cloud storage or continuously updated services, and accepts paying again for a future major version. It is not a like-for-like replacement for Family storage or sharing.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Signing in with the wrong Microsoft account and assuming the subscription disappeared.
- Expecting a second key to create more storage or simultaneous consumer subscriptions.
- Assuming a downgrade starts immediately when the old plan remains active through renewal.
- Redeeming a Personal key on Family without reading the conversion choice.
- Ignoring a reduced storage allowance until the account is over its new limit.
- Forgetting that Family members may lose shared access.
- Applying consumer instructions to a work or school tenant, which uses a different licensing model.
- Assuming every cancellation page includes a Classic or no-AI offer.
The Bottom Line
Use account.microsoft.com/services and the existing plan’s Manage → Cancel subscription flow. Choose Personal for one desktop-app user, Family when multiple people genuinely share it, Basic when storage and online benefits are enough, or Office Home 2024 when you want to end recurring billing. Confirm the effective date, storage allocation, family access, renewal price and final plan status before completing the change.
