SHI is offering enterprise customers ways to manage rising memory and storage costs: buy earlier, reserve and warehouse equipment, explore financing, and consider other configurations or infrastructure options. These services can help with timing, supply allocation and cash flow; they are not a guarantee that prices will stay fixed or that every needed component will be available.
What SHI is offering
SHI describes a mix of procurement and supply-chain services rather than a new memory product or a blanket price cap. Its Memory and Storage Price Updates material outlines these options:
- Pre-buy and warehouse: Purchase equipment ahead of a planned deployment and hold it for later drawdown.
- Plan and source strategically: Forecast requirements, place orders earlier, and consider supply across manufacturers and product families.
- Manage quotes and allocation: SHI says it is pulling quotes forward to seek pricing and allocation before OEM changes. Quote validity varies by case; an earlier quote is not automatically a lasting price lock.
- Consider alternatives: Evaluate complementary products, refurbished equipment or cloud-based infrastructure where they meet workload requirements.
- Use account support: SHI says account teams can monitor quote status, orders and availability.
CRN reports that SHI is also using financing, pre-buys and warehouse capacity, and has coordinated shipment schedules and price-locking with Dell for some large opportunities. Those are customer-specific arrangements, not published standard terms. SHI’s Dell partner page describes its broader work with Dell on servers, storage and AI solutions, but does not promise protected pricing for every configuration.
Why enterprise memory and storage costs are under pressure
“Memory” covers products with different markets and technical requirements. DRAM is working memory in servers and PCs; HBM is high-bandwidth memory used with AI accelerators; NAND flash is used in SSDs. DDR4, DDR5 and LPDDR are different DRAM types, while enterprise SSDs and client SSDs differ in areas such as endurance, firmware and qualification.

AI infrastructure demand is a major pressure: manufacturers have been allocating more capacity to HBM and server applications, leaving other memory categories more exposed to supply constraints and price changes. TrendForce reported continued supplier reallocation toward HBM and server products in 2026, with pressure across multiple memory categories in its 2Q26 market update. That does not mean every type or model is equally scarce. Availability can vary by capacity, generation, OEM qualification, geography, contract terms and whether a part is a standard module or a proprietary spare.
How large are the reported price increases?
SHI executive Kapil Bansal told CRN that memory prices were rising by about 20%–25% per quarter. This is his estimate of market conditions, not a universal rate for every memory type, supplier or customer contract, and it should not be treated as a promise that the same increase will recur each quarter. SHI’s customer material separately says manufacturers have announced price increases and longer delivery times across categories including laptops, servers, RAM, SSDs and networking equipment.
SHI’s April 2026 Solutions Magazine cites a report claiming DRAM prices had risen 171% year over year and DDR5 spot prices had quadrupled since an earlier comparison point. Those are attributed figures from that report, not a single price measure that applies to all buyers or products. TrendForce’s 1Q26 forecast is also a dated forecast, not a live quote for today.
When buying early can make sense
Buying ahead may reduce exposure to future price changes, allocation constraints and project delays if the equipment is already approved and demand is predictable. It is most defensible for standardized deployments with a clear schedule, secure storage and a product that will remain supported through installation.

For scale, a hypothetical $1 million order that became 20% more expensive would cost $200,000 more before other costs. That illustration is not a forecast or a claim that a particular SHI quote will rise by 20%. The net value of buying early depends on whether the price increase actually occurs and whether it exceeds financing, storage, insurance, handling, deployment-delay and obsolescence costs.
Buying ahead is less attractive if requirements may change, the system is evolving quickly, or a project depends on rapidly changing AI hardware. A pre-buy can leave a buyer with the wrong generation or configuration. Warranty coverage may also begin at shipment rather than installation, so its start date matters.
What warehousing and financing change
Warehousing can shift the physical burden of holding equipment from the customer to SHI, but it does not make inventory risk-free. SHI’s public material describes buying and holding equipment for later deployment; it does not publish universal storage fees, financing rates, drawdown periods or cancellation terms. Obtain those details in the specific quote.

Why OEM qualification matters
A memory module that looks equivalent on paper may not work as a substitute in an enterprise system. Server support can depend on OEM qualification, firmware, error-correction capability, DIMM population and capacity-balancing rules, as well as warranty and service conditions. The same issue applies to storage: interface, endurance, firmware and support requirements matter alongside capacity and price.
CRN reports that SHI has worked with Dell on shipment schedules and price locking for some large opportunities. That may matter when memory is procured as part of an OEM-qualified server or storage system, but buyers should not assume a price lock covers every component or future expansion order.

Large organizations with predictable, multi-quarter demand, standardized fleets and the capacity to manage inventory may be better placed to use pre-buys or negotiated drawdowns. Smaller buyers and organizations with uncertain requirements should not assume they will receive the same allocation, financing or storage terms. SHI’s public materials do not establish universal eligibility or terms.

A procurement checklist before committing
- Map exposure: List open quotes, accepted quotes awaiting shipment, unfulfilled purchase orders and projects planned over the next 6–18 months. Include required memory capacities, SSD and HDD needs, OEM part numbers, critical spares, and dependencies such as GPUs or AI accelerators.
- Separate fixed from flexible requirements: Identify whether capacity, DIMM population, SSD endurance tier, interface, server model, deployment timing, on-premises versus cloud delivery, or new versus refurbished equipment can change.
- Request written commercial terms: Confirm quote expiration, price-lock duration, allocation by part number and quantity, delivery window, substitution rights, cancellation terms, partial-shipment treatment, and whether freight, taxes, installation and support are included.
- Clarify custody and lifecycle terms: Ask who owns inventory before deployment, when payment is due, when warranty begins, whether storage, insurance, handling or logistics charges apply, and how long drawdown is allowed.
- Test what happens when plans change: Establish whether models or capacities can be substituted, what happens if a part becomes end-of-life or the project is canceled, and whether an alternate retains OEM support. Ask how serial numbers are assigned and whether inventory records can be audited.
- Compare three scenarios: Model buying now and holding; buying later at uncertain prices; and deferring, redesigning or shifting part of the workload to cloud or managed infrastructure. Include cost of capital, inventory costs, deployment timing and obsolescence risk—not only component prices.
- Verify actual availability: Do not treat a catalog listing as proof of immediate supply. SHI marketplace pages include stock-status signals, and public listings can be backordered or require stock verification. Check the specific part, quantity and delivery region with the supplier before relying on it.
What SHI’s approach can and cannot do
SHI can offer procurement mechanisms to manage the timing of purchases, potential allocation, configuration choices and cash flow. It cannot remove a market shortage, make every component interchangeable or guarantee that a quoted configuration will remain available. The decision to pre-buy should rest on written terms and a comparison of expected price exposure against the full cost and risk of holding inventory.
