In the U.S., a MacBook screen repair can cost a few hundred dollars or more without coverage. With active AppleCare+, a qualifying screen-only accident generally has a $99 service fee on most Mac models, or $49 on MacBook Neo. Independent repair is often estimated at roughly $300–$800, while DIY display assemblies can cost about $165–$500 or more before tools and labor. Apple does not publish one price for every MacBook: the exact model and damage determine the quote.
Prices below are U.S. figures checked August 16, 2026. Confirm current fees and get a model-specific estimate before authorizing a repair.
MacBook screen replacement costs at a glance
| Repair route | Typical U.S. price signal | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| AppleCare+ accidental-damage service | $99 for screen-only or enclosure-only damage on most Macs; $49 on MacBook Neo | These are per-service fees, not the cost of the AppleCare+ plan. Additional damage may move the repair into a higher fee tier. |
| Apple out-of-warranty repair | Often several hundred dollars | Apple gives model-specific estimates and may need to inspect the Mac before confirming a price. |
| Independent repair shop | Broadly, about $300–$800 | A market estimate, not a national price. Model, part type, labor, and warranty all matter. |
| DIY display assembly | About $165–$500 or more for parts in listed MacBook Air examples | Tools, shipping, taxes, time, and the risk of damaging the computer are extra. |
These figures are not directly comparable: AppleCare+ is a service fee for eligible covered incidents, while shop and DIY figures refer to repair work or parts. A repair may also involve more than the display.
What AppleCare+ charges for screen damage
For most Mac models in the U.S., AppleCare+ lists a $99 service fee for accidental damage limited to the screen or external enclosure. Other accidental damage generally has a $299 fee. MacBook Neo has a separate schedule: $49 for screen or enclosure damage and $149 for other accidental damage. Applicable taxes may be additional. See Apple’s current service-fee schedule and AppleCare+ terms.

The lower screen fee is not guaranteed just because the glass is cracked. Apple’s terms limit it to screen-only or enclosure-only damage; additional damage that affects the repair can qualify for the higher tier. A cracked display accompanied by a bent lid, liquid exposure, or other damage may therefore cost more. The AppleCare+ repair fee is also separate from the price of buying the plan.
Apple repair without AppleCare+
There is no universal Apple price for replacing a MacBook screen. Apple’s Mac repair page directs customers to a model-specific estimate and notes that inspection may be needed. The final amount can depend on the damage, parts availability, location, taxes, shipping, and service provider. Apple Authorized Service Providers may set their own out-of-warranty fees.
- Identify the Mac precisely. Note Air or Pro, screen size, approximate year, chip generation, and model identifier. The serial number can help identify the exact configuration.
- Start Apple’s repair process. Select the Mac and describe the issue to see the available service route and estimate.
- Wait for diagnosis if required. A blank or flickering display may not be a failed screen, and an inspection can change the estimate.
- Confirm the full amount. Ask whether shipping, taxes, diagnostic charges, or additional damage are included before approving the work.
Apple says repair or replacement service is guaranteed for 90 days or the remainder of the applicable warranty or AppleCare plan, whichever is longer. Check the current terms and the estimate for your specific service.

Independent repair shops: compare more than the headline price
Independent shops may quote roughly $300–$800 for a display repair, but that broad range is only a market signal, not an official average or a promise for your model. Older machines may be cheaper; newer Retina, larger, and higher-spec displays can cost considerably more. A quote may also exclude labor, diagnosis, shipping, or tax.
Before approving a repair, ask the shop to put these details in writing:
- Is the display genuine Apple, refurbished, pulled from another Mac, or aftermarket?
- Does the price include labor, diagnosis, and all required parts?
- What warranty covers the part and workmanship, and for how long?
- Will the shop test brightness, camera, sleep and wake, and other display-related functions?
- Is there a diagnostic fee if you decline the repair?
- What happens if testing shows the screen is not the cause?
Apple says independent providers may have access to genuine parts and resources, but an independent repair is not an Apple-authorized repair. Apple also says damage caused by a non-authorized provider is not covered by Apple’s limited warranty or AppleCare. That is not a blanket judgment about every independent shop; it is a reason to check the provider’s experience, parts, and written warranty. See Apple’s repair-provider information.

DIY: parts cost is not the whole cost
Display assemblies listed for MacBook Air models illustrate the range: examples include about $164.99 for a 2012 13-inch Air, $319.99 for 2013–2017 models, around $399.99 for the M1 Air, and about $495–$500 for some 2022–2024 Air assemblies. These are parts prices, not installed repair prices; listings can change and exclude tools, shipping, and taxes. Browse the iFixit MacBook Air screen catalog for current model-specific listings.

Many MacBooks use an integrated display assembly rather than a simple removable glass layer. Replacing the assembly can involve delicate cables, connectors, and small fasteners, and an error can damage the camera, hinge, display connection, or logic board. Model-specific repair guides identify the required tools and steps; for example, see iFixit’s M1 MacBook Air guide. A specialist may offer glass- or LCD-only work on some models, but it is not a routine consumer repair and should come with a clear warranty.
DIY is most plausible for an experienced repairer with an older Mac and an affordable compatible assembly. It is a poor bet if you have no repair experience, the Mac is valuable or still covered, or you cannot risk downtime or a failed repair. Parts alone do not make DIY automatically cheaper.

A black or flickering display may not need a screen replacement
A cracked panel is strong evidence of physical display damage, but a black, blank, flickering, or discolored screen does not identify the failed component by itself. Possible causes include a software problem, display cable or hinge damage, a failed display assembly, power or battery trouble, liquid corrosion, or a logic-board fault. Do not order a display solely from symptoms; ask for a diagnosis first.
If the Mac itself still works, an external monitor may be a temporary way to access it while you compare repair options. You may need the right USB-C, Thunderbolt, or other adapter, and behavior depends on the Mac and operating system. It will not fix a dead Mac or logic-board fault, and a damaged internal screen can make login or display arrangement awkward. Back up important files as soon as you can. Avoid pressing on a cracked panel or closing a lid with pressure on it: damage can spread, sharp glass can injure you, and a damaged hinge can strain cables.

Repair or replace the MacBook?
Compare the written repair quote with the cost of a comparable replacement Mac, including a used or refurbished option if that suits your needs. A useful budgeting heuristic—not an Apple rule—is to look closely at replacement when a repair approaches roughly 40–50% of the cost of an equivalent replacement. The right choice also depends on condition, configuration, and how long you expect to use the computer.

| Situation | Practical next step |
|---|---|
| Recent Mac with active AppleCare+ and screen-only damage | Ask Apple or an authorized provider to confirm eligibility and the applicable service fee. |
| Recent Mac without coverage | Compare Apple’s model-specific quote with two or three written independent-shop quotes. |
| Older Mac with a low-value configuration or several existing faults | Compare repair cost with a suitable replacement before approving work. |
| Liquid exposure, bent lid, or possible battery swelling | Seek professional diagnosis; a screen-only estimate may miss the larger problem. |
| Mac works with an external monitor | Use it as a temporary workaround while weighing repair against replacement. |
| Inexpensive assembly and substantial repair experience | DIY may be reasonable if you accept the risk and confirm exact part compatibility. |
Repair is easier to justify when the Mac is relatively new, otherwise in good condition, and the quote is modest relative to a comparable replacement. Replacement may make more sense if the Mac already needs a battery, keyboard, or logic-board repair, has limited operating-system support, or the display quote is close to the value of a comparable used or refurbished computer. Apple’s terms allow it to repair or exchange a covered product at its discretion; do not assume every damaged Mac will be replaced as a whole.
Before you hand over your Mac
- Back up with Time Machine or another method. A display repair should not inherently require erasing data, but no repairer can promise data will always be preserved.
- Record the serial number and photograph the Mac’s condition before service.
- Ask whether the provider needs access to the Mac and how it will protect your data. Do not give out your usual password unnecessarily; where practical, ask whether a temporary account will work.
- Follow the provider’s instructions about signing out of your Apple Account or disabling Find My Mac; requirements can vary by service route.
- Remove accessories, memory cards, and anything else the provider does not need.
- Get the estimate, part description, diagnostic fee, and warranty in writing before authorizing the repair.
The exact model matters more than a generic online price. For most owners without AppleCare+, expect a several-hundred-dollar decision, verify the diagnosis, and compare a complete quote—not just the replacement panel—with the value of the Mac.
