Short answer: The original PS5 was reported to cost Sony approximately $450 per unit to manufacture before its 2020 launch. That figure came from a Bloomberg report citing unnamed sources; Sony never officially confirmed it.
There is no verified public figure for the cost of making a current PS5 Slim, standard PS5, Digital Edition, or PS5 Pro in 2026. The $450 estimate should therefore be treated as historical launch-era context—not as Sony’s current cost or profit per console.
What “cost to make” a PS5 means
“Cost to make” can describe several different layers of expense. Confusing them is why online estimates often appear more precise than the available evidence allows.
| Cost layer | What it includes | Publicly known? |
|---|---|---|
| Bill of materials (BOM) | Chips, memory, SSD, motherboard, case, power supply, disc drive, controller and other physical parts | Not fully disclosed |
| Manufacturing cost | BOM plus assembly, testing, packaging, factory labor, overhead and potential production losses | Only an approximate pre-launch estimate is public |
| Total commercial cost | Manufacturing, shipping, warehousing, warranty, marketing, research, software, support and corporate overhead | Not disclosed per console |
| Retail price | The price paid by the consumer, before applicable taxes and regional differences | Public |
The widely cited $450 figure should be described as a reported pre-launch manufacturing estimate. It is not necessarily a narrow component-only BOM, and it is not a complete measure of Sony’s total cost of selling a console.

Where the $450 PS5 estimate came from
On February 13, 2020, Bloomberg reported that Sony’s manufacturing cost for the upcoming PS5 was around $450 per unit. The report relied on people familiar with Sony’s operations and was published before the console launched.
The same report said Sony was facing cost pressure involving components including DRAM and NAND flash. It also compared the estimate with a historical estimate of approximately $381 for manufacturing the PS4, attributed to IHS Markit. That comparison provides context, but it is not a fully audited, apples-to-apples accounting comparison.
Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki also discussed the importance of controlling the PS5’s BOM and deciding on an appropriate initial production volume. As Ars Technica reported, those comments support the existence of component-cost pressure, but they did not confirm the $450 number.
In other words, the estimate has a credible published source, but it remains an estimate based on unnamed sources—not a figure Sony published in a financial statement.
Which PS5 components drive the cost?
The PS5 was expensive to build because it combined high-performance computing, fast memory and a custom storage system in a mass-market console.

- Custom AMD system-on-chip: The CPU and GPU are integrated into a custom processor designed for the PS5.
- GDDR6 memory: High-speed graphics memory was an important cost-sensitive component around launch.
- Internal SSD and storage controller: The PS5’s fast solid-state storage and custom storage architecture cost more than the hard drive used in older consoles.
- Cooling system: The 2020 Bloomberg report specifically identified the PS5’s cooling solution as unusually expensive for a console component.
- Optical disc drive: The standard model includes a drive that the Digital Edition omits.
- Motherboard and power-management hardware: These support the console’s processor, storage, networking and power requirements.
- Chassis, power supply, cables and packaging: These are part of the physical product even though they are less visible than the main processor.
- DualSense controller: The controller included in the box also contributes to the hardware package’s cost.
A teardown can identify the parts inside a console, but it cannot reveal Sony’s actual supplier prices. Sony buys at large volumes and negotiates contracts that are different from the retail or spot-market prices consumers might find for individual components.
For component identification, iFixit’s PS5 teardown guide is useful evidence about what is inside the hardware—but not an audited cost breakdown.

How much does a PS5 cost in the United States?
Sony’s latest cited U.S. price change took effect on April 2, 2026. The recommended retail prices are:
| Model | U.S. MSRP |
|---|---|
| PS5 with disc drive | $649.99 |
| PS5 Digital Edition | $599.99 |
| PS5 Pro | $899.99 |
These prices come from Sony Interactive Entertainment’s price announcement. They are U.S. MSRPs, not universal worldwide prices. Taxes, currency movements, import costs, tariffs and local distribution can make the consumer price different elsewhere.
PlayStation Direct’s U.S. store currently displays dollar prices without cents in some listings, including approximately $649 for the standard PS5, $599 for the Digital Edition and $899 for the PS5 Pro. Store inventory, bundles and displayed prices can change, so the official announcement’s dated MSRP is the clearer reference point.

Does the $450 estimate mean Sony made $200 on each PS5?
No. Subtracting $450 from today’s $649.99 MSRP would produce a nominal difference of $199.99, but that is not Sony’s profit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsEven the original launch comparison—$499.99 MSRP minus the reported $450 estimate—would leave only about $49.99 before other costs. That calculation is illustrative, not a profit statement.
The money paid by a customer may be divided among several parties and expenses:
- Sony or its manufacturing partners buy the components and assemble, test and package the console.
- Freight, warehousing and regional distribution add costs.
- Distributors and retailers may retain part of the selling price.
- Sony must account for warranty service, customer support and returns.
- Product design, engineering, software development, certification, marketing and corporate operations require funding.
- Taxes and regional fees affect the final transaction price.
A more realistic simplified model is:
Retail price
− retailer and distributor margins
− taxes and regional fees
− shipping and warehousing
− warranty and support
− marketing, R&D and corporate costs
− manufacturing cost
= remaining hardware contribution
Sony’s public disclosures do not provide enough information to determine whether every PS5 model is profitable on a fully allocated basis. “Selling below the BOM,” “selling below full manufacturing cost” and “selling with a low hardware margin” are different claims.
Does the PS5 Digital Edition cost less to make?
The Digital Edition should have a lower hardware cost because it omits the optical disc drive. Sony does not publicly disclose the exact saving.

Removing the drive eliminates the mechanism, disc-reading electronics and related mounting, shielding, assembly and testing requirements. But the saving is not necessarily equal to the $50 difference between the current U.S. MSRPs.
That price difference may also reflect Sony’s pricing strategy, expected production volumes, digital-store economics, promotions and the value of encouraging digital game purchases. Therefore, it is accurate to say the Digital Edition is expected to cost less to manufacture—not that Sony saves a publicly verified dollar amount on every unit.

It may, but no authoritative public source establishes a current PS5 Slim BOM or manufacturing cost.
A slimmer redesign can reduce chassis material, board size, cooling-system requirements, power-supply size, shipping volume and manufacturing complexity. Higher production volumes and supplier renegotiations can also reduce unit costs over time.
However, the opposite pressures are possible too. Memory and storage prices, energy, labor, currency movements, tariffs, trade costs and warranty expenses can change the economics. Sony’s FY2025 Form 20-F discusses global procurement and the effects that component availability, raw materials, energy and trade-related costs can have on production expenses, but it does not give a PS5-specific cost history.

What about the PS5 Pro?
The PS5 Pro should be analyzed as a separate product. It is not reasonable to take the original PS5 estimate and simply add the difference between the standard console’s price and the Pro’s price.
Sony’s PS5 Pro architecture and teardown overview describes a more advanced graphics system, additional memory architecture—including DDR5 memory alongside GDDR6—and a 2TB SSD. Those differences can materially affect the component mix and manufacturing economics.

That retail price does not establish a $899.99 production cost, a particular profit margin or a simple $450-plus-premium formula. Sony has not published the Pro’s BOM or per-unit manufacturing cost.
Why console makers may accept relatively low hardware margins
A console can be part of a larger business model rather than an isolated product. Once a household owns the hardware, it may buy games, downloadable content, accessories, subscriptions and digital downloads through the platform over several years.
Large installed bases can also improve production efficiency through scale. Sony Interactive Entertainment reports more than 95 million PS5 hardware units sold worldwide on a sell-in basis as of June 30, 2026, according to its business data. That figure is useful context for scale, but it does not reveal the current cost or profit on each console.
The economics vary by model, bundle, market and production date. A disc console, Digital Edition, Slim revision, Pro model and certified refurbished unit should not be assumed to have identical costs or margins.
What can—and cannot—be concluded
- Supported: The best-known public estimate for the original PS5 before launch was approximately $450 per unit.
- Supported: The estimate was reported by Bloomberg in February 2020 and was not officially confirmed by Sony.
- Supported: Memory, NAND storage, the custom AMD processor and cooling system were among the cost-sensitive areas identified in launch-era reporting.
- Reasonable but unquantified: The Digital Edition should cost less to build because it lacks an optical drive.
- Possible but unverified: Slim revisions may reduce manufacturing and logistics costs through smaller, more efficient hardware.
- Unknown: The current manufacturing cost of the standard PS5, Slim, Digital Edition or PS5 Pro.
- Unsupported: Saying Sony makes $200 on every current PS5, or loses money on every PS5.
Bottom line
If you mean the original PS5 at launch, the best public estimate is roughly $450 to manufacture. If you mean a current PS5 model in 2026, the exact figure is unknown. It is likely different because the hardware, component prices, production scale and market conditions have changed, but Sony has not published enough information to calculate it responsibly.
