In the U.S., public cord blood donation generally costs the donor family nothing, if the delivery hospital participates and the family qualifies. Private family banking has fees for collection and processing plus storage. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) published an estimate of $1,350–$2,300 for placement and $100–$175 per year for maintenance in its 2017 policy statement, reaffirmed in April 2026. That is a dated estimate, not a guaranteed current quote from every bank.
Public donation and private banking have different costs and access

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) says public storage is free to the donor family, but only participating hospitals collect for public banks. Check with your obstetric care team before relying on this option.
What a private-bank quote may include
A headline price or monthly payment may leave out costs that change the total. Ask for a written breakdown that covers the full contracted storage period.
- Collection: Any fee charged for collecting the cord blood, including a possible hospital or provider fee.
- Processing and testing: Charges for preparing and testing the sample.
- Kit and shipping: The collection kit and courier or shipping charges, if separate.
- Storage: The number of years covered and whether payment is annual, prepaid, or by installment.
- Other contract charges: Any release or retrieval fees disclosed by the bank.
- Payment conditions: The amount due at enrollment, the number and size of later payments, whether any payment is nonrefundable, and what happens if payments stop.
- Future increases: Whether annual storage rates can rise and how the bank handles those changes.
ACOG advises families who choose private banking to find out the total cost, including collection, processing, and annual storage fees. Compare providers using the same storage horizon and count the enrollment payment plus every scheduled installment; a monthly figure alone is not the total price.

A dated provider example shows how terms affect the total
Americord Registry’s pricing page, accessed September 28, 2026, listed the following Essential-plan examples. These are provider-specific prices, not a market average or a recommendation.

The page stated that its promotion was valid September 1–30, 2026, Eastern Time, and excluded annual plans, the kit, and shipping from the discount. It also labeled the $280 due today as nonrefundable, said provider collection charges may apply, and noted that annual storage rates may rise. Confirm current terms directly with the provider; these figures describe the page on the date accessed and do not establish what another bank charges.

Price should be weighed against the intended use
Private storage is not a guarantee that a child or relative will be able to use the stored cells, or that they will treat a future illness. ACOG says routine private storage as “insurance” against future disease is not recommended. Its clinical guidance describes public banking as the recommended method for medically validated transplantation use. Private banking may be considered when a family member is known to have a potentially treatable malignant or genetic condition; discuss that specific situation with the treating clinician or transplant center.

The AAP advises families to ask banks about accreditation, costs, failure rates or quality information, and backup power and storage safeguards; do not assume every bank has the same accreditation status.

ACOG says the bank generally needs advance notice and the collection kit must be obtained before delivery, usually six weeks or more before the due date. Ask your obstetric care team whether your delivery hospital can collect for the bank you are considering, and clarify any collection charge before signing up.
