If PayPal asks you to confirm a debit or credit card, its four-digit code is usually in the description of a small PayPal verification charge on that card’s statement—not in a text or email. Find the digits in the transaction details, then enter them beside that card in PayPal. Menu labels vary by country and interface.
First, identify which code PayPal is asking for
PayPal uses different codes for different tasks. If the screen says to confirm a card, look for the four-digit code on the card statement. If you are signing in and PayPal sends a message, it may be a separate security code. The CVV or CVC printed on your physical card is different from both.

PayPal’s cited US guidance says security-check codes may expire after about five to ten minutes. That timing concerns those identity-verification flows; it should not be assumed to describe the four-digit card-statement code. See PayPal’s security-check guidance and SMS troubleshooting.
Find the four digits on your card statement
When you start card confirmation, PayPal places a small verification charge on the linked card. Check the card issuer’s app or website, open the transaction list, and select the PayPal charge to see its full details. The description may look like PayPal*1234 CODE or PP*1234 CODE; the four digits are the code to enter. Your issuer may abbreviate or format the description differently.

Some issuers show the full description while the charge is pending, sometimes within minutes. Others show only a shortened merchant name until the charge posts. PayPal says the code may appear on the online statement after two to three business days. If online details are unavailable, check the paper statement.
PayPal cannot provide this card-confirmation code by email or phone. If the charge is unfamiliar, make sure it relates to a card-confirmation request you initiated and to the card you intend to confirm.

Enter the code in PayPal
- Open PayPal by typing its address into your browser or using the official app. Do not use an unexpected message link.
- Open Wallet. Depending on your region or interface, the section may instead be called Banks and Cards.
- Select the card that needs confirmation. Check that it is the same card whose statement you reviewed.
- Choose Confirm Card or the equivalent confirmation option.
- Enter the four digits from the PayPal transaction description, then select Confirm or Submit.
- Check the card’s status in PayPal to make sure it is confirmed.
The wording and exact path can vary by country and interface; PayPal’s card-confirmation instructions and code-location instructions show examples of these variations.

- Wait for the pending transaction’s details to update. Open the charge itself rather than relying on the abbreviated account-feed description.
- If the full code is still missing, check again when the transaction posts. PayPal’s guidance allows two to three business days for it to appear on the online statement.
- Check the paper statement if the issuer does not show full online transaction details.
- If PayPal offers the option, request a replacement code. PayPal says a new code may be requested up to three times.
If you requested a code more than once, use the latest one. Match the newest request to the newest PayPal verification entry, the correct card, and—if the issuer displays it—the card’s final four digits. Do not use an older code just because it is easier to see.

If PayPal rejects the code
Before trying again, check that you selected the right card and copied the digits from the latest verification charge. Make sure you did not enter the CVV/CVC, a bank reference number, or digits from an older PayPal charge. If the issuer shortened the description, do not guess at the missing digits; wait for the full details or contact PayPal through its official Help or Contact page.
Do not keep trying random codes. PayPal says five incorrect entries can disable the card in its system. Recovery may require contacting PayPal; its guidance says you may need to remove and re-add the card before requesting another code. See PayPal’s guidance for failed card-confirmation attempts.

What happens after confirmation?
PayPal says it initiates a refund of the verification charge immediately after successful confirmation. That does not mean the amount will disappear from your pending transactions or be credited to your available balance straight away: your card issuer controls its posting time, which may take up to 30 days. PayPal also notes that a refund may need to be handled by customer service if the card is removed or the account is closed before it is processed.

The card may already be confirmed automatically, so no code entry is needed. It might also be shown in a different account section or may not be eligible for this confirmation process. Check the card’s status and make sure you are signed in to the PayPal account associated with the verification charge. If you cannot resolve it, contact PayPal through its official Help or Contact page.

Keep the code private
Enter the code only on PayPal’s official website or app when you have intentionally started card confirmation. Never give it to a caller, buyer, seller, or anyone claiming they need it to release funds; do not send a statement screenshot. Navigate to PayPal independently instead of following an unexpected link. If you did not initiate the verification charge, do not enter or share the code—review your PayPal activity and contact PayPal and your card issuer through official channels.
