The correct way to dispute a Microsoft subscription charge depends on whether you recognize the purchase, who processed the payment, and whether you want to stop future billing, request a refund, or report fraud.
- Recognized Microsoft renewal: use Microsoft Services & subscriptions to cancel and check refund eligibility.
- Unrecognized charge: use Microsoft’s Manage your payments → Investigate tool, then contact your bank if the charge appears unauthorized.
- Apple, Google Play, Amazon, or retailer purchase: request the cancellation or refund from that seller, not Microsoft.
Cancellation is not automatically a refund, and a bank chargeback is different from a merchant refund.
First, identify what kind of charge you have
Before filing a dispute, compare the statement’s date and amount with your Microsoft order history and receipts. Check every Microsoft account used by you or household members, including accounts associated with Microsoft 365, OneDrive, Copilot, Xbox, Clipchamp, Microsoft Store, games, and in-app purchases.
An apparently unfamiliar Microsoft charge may be a recurring renewal, a family member’s purchase, a previously declined transaction processed later, a split order, a preorder, or an in-app purchase. Microsoft lists these possibilities in its billing-investigation guidance.

Also inspect the receipt or statement to determine who actually processed the payment. A Microsoft-branded product may have been purchased through Apple, Google Play, Amazon, Best Buy, or another retailer.
Choose the right remedy

Canceling stops or changes future service. Turning off recurring billing generally prevents another automatic renewal while allowing access through the paid period. A refund request asks the seller to return money. A chargeback is a formal claim handled by your bank, card issuer, or payment provider.
If you recognize the Microsoft subscription
- Go to account.microsoft.com/services.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that made the purchase.
- Find the subscription and select Manage.
- Select Cancel or, for some products, Upgrade or Cancel.
- Follow the prompts and review whether Microsoft offers a refund.
Microsoft uses the cancellation process to assess refund eligibility for subscriptions purchased directly from Microsoft. Not every cancellation results in a refund. The exact buttons can vary by product, country, and purchase channel.

Microsoft refund timing and limits
According to Microsoft’s policy published as of August 18, 2026, a refund may be available in many cases within 30 days of the initial purchase or before the first recurring billing date, whichever comes first. A customer may also qualify for a refund of the most recent recurring charge if the subscription is canceled within 30 days after payment.

That recurring-charge refund provision is limited to one time per Microsoft account, per subscription product. It is not a guarantee for every transaction, country, or product, and applicable consumer law may provide additional rights. Review Microsoft’s current refund policy for the rules that apply to your purchase.
For some Microsoft 365, OneDrive, and Clipchamp subscriptions, Microsoft lists prorated-refund treatment in specific regions, including Canada, Denmark, France, Israel, Korea, and Türkiye, along with certain associated territories. For Copilot Pro and Microsoft 365 Premium, the listed regional rules differ; outside those regions, Microsoft states that cancellation within 14 days of the initial purchase may qualify for a refund. Do not assume these regional provisions apply to your product or location.
What “Turn on recurring billing” means
If the subscription page shows Turn on recurring billing, rather than a control to cancel recurring billing, Microsoft says recurring billing is already off. The page should show an expiration date, and access normally continues until then. You generally do not need to cancel again, although a separate refund request may still be possible if you meet the eligibility rules.

- Open Microsoft’s billing investigation guidance.
- In the Microsoft account dashboard, open Manage your payments and select Investigate.
- Check every Microsoft account used by your household.
- Compare the charge with order history, receipts, subscriptions, and recent account activity.
- If the charge still appears unauthorized, contact your bank, card issuer, or payment provider immediately.
Do not assume an unfamiliar charge is automatically fraud: family purchases, recurring billing, delayed processing, split orders, preorders, and in-app purchases can produce similar results.

If someone may have accessed your Microsoft account, change its password, review recent sign-in activity, inspect saved payment methods, and enable available security protections. If payment details may have been stolen, ask your issuer whether the card should be blocked or replaced. Disputing only one transaction may not prevent additional fraudulent charges.
If Apple, Google Play, Amazon, or a retailer billed you
Microsoft cannot generally cancel, modify, or refund a subscription when the third party received the payment. Use the account associated with the purchase:
- Apple App Store: manage cancellation and request a refund through Apple.
- Google Play: manage cancellation and request a refund through Google Play.
- Amazon, Best Buy, or another retailer: contact that retailer and follow its return or refund policy.
Prepaid retail subscription codes are also subject to the retailer’s return policy rather than Microsoft’s standard direct-purchase refund rules. Keep the original receipt and order number.
If you canceled but were still charged
Check the subscription page for its expiration date and investigate the transaction in Microsoft’s payment dashboard. Common explanations include:

- Close to protect screen and conserve battery, or fold back completely for a tablet.
- The cancellation occurred too close to the billing date. Microsoft says cancellation generally must occur more than two days before the billing date to avoid a charge.
- You canceled a different Microsoft account.
- Recurring billing was not actually turned off.
- The subscription is controlled by Apple, Google Play, Amazon, or another seller.
- The charge was a delayed transaction or a previously declined payment that was later processed.
- The charge belongs to another Microsoft product or a household member.
- An overdue balance is preventing cancellation.
An overdue balance can prevent cancellation, but do not pay an unfamiliar or potentially fraudulent charge simply to unlock cancellation. Treat a suspected unauthorized transaction as a bank or card-issuer matter.
If the account, seller, and timing all appear correct but the charge remains unresolved, use Microsoft’s cancellation troubleshooting guidance and contact Microsoft Support.

Before accepting a cancellation or refund, check what happens to your data and shared benefits. Canceling Microsoft 365 Basic or Personal can reduce cloud storage to 5 GB, including OneDrive and Outlook.com attachments. Outlook.com email storage is listed separately as 15 GB.

Canceling Microsoft 365 Family or Premium can also affect everyone using shared benefits and storage. Download or move important files and check the effect on other members before finalizing a cancellation that ends your subscription benefits.
When to file a bank chargeback
A bank or card dispute is most appropriate when the transaction is unauthorized or fraudulent, the payment method may be compromised, or the seller cannot resolve a legitimate billing error. Contact the issuer promptly because dispute deadlines and procedures vary by bank, card network, country, and payment type.
When you contact the issuer, explain whether you are reporting fraud or disputing a billing error. Preserve:

- Statement descriptor, date, and amount
- Microsoft order number or receipt, if available
- Relevant subscription and cancellation dates
- Messages exchanged with Microsoft or the third-party seller
- Support case numbers and screenshots of the account status
For a clearly recognized accidental renewal, requesting a Microsoft refund—or a refund from the actual seller—is usually more appropriate than immediately filing a chargeback. For suspected fraud, securing the payment method and contacting the issuer should take priority.
