Cher Wang built her fortune through ownership and leadership stakes in two Taiwanese technology companies: semiconductor and chipset maker VIA Technologies, and smartphone pioneer HTC. HTC’s surge during the early smartphone era made her wealth especially visible, but the widely cited billionaire estimates are historical—not a verified measure of her net worth today.
The short answer: company ownership, not a single windfall
Wang’s wealth came primarily from building and leading businesses whose value rose as their technology, partnerships and markets grew. She helped establish VIA Technologies in 1987 and co-founded HTC in 1997. Her husband, Wen-Chi Chen, was also a key business partner and VIA executive. Their fortunes were closely associated with the companies’ equity value, rather than simply with salaries or one large payment.
HTC provided the most dramatic public chapter. It grew from a behind-the-scenes device designer and manufacturer into a prominent smartphone brand, with an early foothold in Windows Mobile and Android. During HTC’s boom, Forbes described Wang and Chen as Taiwan’s wealthiest couple. Those estimates help explain how she became known as a billionaire, but they should be read as dated valuations of business interests—not cash on hand or a current net-worth figure.
A powerful family background, followed by her own companies
Wang is the daughter of Wang Yung-ching, founder of Formosa Plastics Group and one of Taiwan’s most prominent industrialists. That background meant she grew up close to business, capital and influential networks. It is relevant context, but the available record does not establish that her billionaire wealth was simply inherited. The documented explanation is her role in founding and leading technology companies whose value grew substantially.

Berkeley’s biography says Wang graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1982. It identifies her as a founder of VIA and HTC. Calling her either entirely “self-made” or merely an heir would flatten the story: family advantage and entrepreneurial achievement can both matter, and her businesses were the direct vehicles through which her technology wealth was built.
VIA Technologies: the first foundation
Founded in 1987, VIA became a Taiwan-based semiconductor and chipset company. Forbes described Wang and Chen as part of the group that built VIA from the remains of Symphony, a California maker of core-logic chips. Chen served as VIA’s president and CEO, while Wang was its chairwoman. The company gave the pair an early base in the computer technology supply chain before HTC became the better-known consumer name.
Chip businesses can create value through chip-design expertise, intellectual property, licensing, partnerships and equity ownership. The growth of personal computing and mobile devices made those capabilities commercially important. Wang’s documented role was as entrepreneur and chairwoman; the evidence does not suggest she personally designed VIA’s chips.

When Wang co-founded HTC in 1997, it did not begin as a household smartphone brand. The company tried handheld computers and laptops; the laptop effort failed. HTC then concentrated on designing and manufacturing devices for other companies, a business model often called original design manufacturing (ODM).

- Unlocked cell phones are compatible with GSM carriers like AT&T and T-Mobile as well as with GSM SIM cards (e.g. H20, Straight Talk, and select prepaid carriers). Unlocked cell phones will not work with CDMA Carriers like Sprint, Verizon, Boost or Virgin.
A 2000 project to design and produce the Compaq Aero personal digital assistant helped establish HTC as a credible mobile-device supplier. It went on to work with companies and carriers including Palm, T-Mobile, Orange and O2. These projects let HTC build engineering skill, manufacturing know-how, carrier relationships and operating scale while other names appeared on the products.
That sequence matters to the wealth story. HTC did not become valuable simply by launching a famous consumer phone. It first developed the capability to make sophisticated mobile devices for partners, then used that experience to move toward products under its own name.
From partner work to HTC-branded smartphones
As HTC gained experience, Wang pushed the company toward branded phones. It progressed from contract manufacturing and partner products to co-branded handsets and HTC-branded devices, including early products running Microsoft’s Windows Mobile software. The company’s engineering and partner relationships helped it compete as smartphones became more capable and demand for mobile internet grew.

HTC’s connection to Google and Android was a pivotal step. The company built the HTC Dream, sold in the United States as the T-Mobile G1, which became the first commercially released Android phone in 2008. That gave HTC an early position in a smartphone ecosystem that would expand rapidly. It also helped establish the company’s reputation as an innovative premium-device maker. HTC later expanded into virtual reality with Vive.

The wealth mechanism was equity appreciation: when a company’s prospects and share value rise, an owner’s stake can become worth far more. HTC benefited from early-mover timing, technical execution, relationships with major partners and the shift from supplier work to a recognizable brand. Wang’s wealth was therefore tied to the value of her holdings, not just to the devices’ sales or her executive compensation.
When the billionaire label took hold
Forbes’ 2011 profile described Wang and Chen as Taiwan’s wealthiest couple and put their combined fortune at $6.8 billion. Other Forbes-related Taiwan wealth coverage cited $8.8 billion. These were estimates from the HTC high-growth period, and reports do not always frame the figure in the same way. A couple’s combined fortune is not the same as Wang’s individual net worth.
Such rankings generally estimate the value of shares and other assets; they do not mean the person holds the reported amount in cash. Public share prices can change sharply, and private-company stakes are estimates. The 2011 figures explain why Wang was widely recognized as a billionaire during HTC’s peak, but they do not establish her current wealth.
HTC’s decline and what the Google deal did—and did not—mean
HTC’s smartphone position weakened as Apple and Samsung gained strength and competition intensified. Reuters reported that HTC’s market share fell from close to 10% in 2011 to below 1% by 2017. Wang returned as CEO in 2015 as the company sought a turnaround. A fall in a company’s prospects can reduce the value of an owner’s shareholding, which is why a historical billionaire estimate should not be treated as permanent.

In September 2017, Google and HTC announced a $1.1 billion cooperation agreement. Under the deal, certain HTC employees joined Google and Google received a nonexclusive license to HTC intellectual property. HTC received the money; the announcement does not say that Wang personally received $1.1 billion, and Google did not buy all of HTC. The transaction showed the value of HTC’s engineering capabilities and provided corporate liquidity, but it is not evidence of a personal payout of the same amount to its chairwoman.

HTC’s 2025 shareholder letter identified Wang as chairwoman and CEO, while the company’s investor materials describe a business focused on mobile and immersive technologies, including virtual reality and VIVERSE. Corporate titles can change, so those descriptions should be understood as what the cited recent materials reported, rather than as a guarantee that a role will remain unchanged.
The available sources do not establish a reliable current net-worth figure for Wang. Forbes’ profile is not a real-time valuation, and neither HTC’s later corporate transaction nor its present business description reveals her full personal assets or liabilities. The careful answer is that she became widely known as a billionaire during HTC’s rise, with wealth rooted in VIA and HTC ownership, while her exact current fortune cannot be responsibly stated from those historical estimates alone.
