Atos supported key information-technology services and applications for UEFA EURO 2024, from accreditation and venue operations to match data, websites and mobile apps. It did not run every technology layer at the tournament. Its “moving train” description captured a different challenge: keeping a major event working while teams deploy, operate, dismantle and reuse systems across a schedule of overlapping competitions.
A major tournament depends on more than the match-day broadcast
UEFA EURO 2024 took place in Germany from 14 June to 14 July 2024. For supporters, the technology is most visible in live coverage, scores and the official app. Behind those services is a distributed operation supporting credentials, venue access, transport, catering, media, staff and technical help across multiple locations.
Atos was UEFA’s Official Information Technology Partner for UEFA National Team Football under a partnership running through 2030. For EURO 2024, Atos delivered key IT planning, operations and application support; it was not the sole provider of every network, broadcast or football-technology system. UEFA described the longer partnership, while Atos outlined its EURO 2024 services.

The work spanned both internal event logistics and services used by fans, media and football stakeholders. Atos’s announced scope included accreditation, access control, competition-management systems, parking, transportation, catering and guest management. It also included cross-venue IT management, printing, radio communications, service desks, football-data distribution, UEFA’s website and mobile app, and interactive features such as predictions and quizzes.

These systems are connected operationally even when they serve different users. A credential has to match the person and location in the access-control system; schedules and transport arrangements have to reach the people who need them; and a match-data feed must be dependable for UEFA services and media outlets. A failure in one of these less visible links can create a real-world problem even if the public website remains online.
Atos later said it supported 200 applications across 11 sites: the 10 stadiums and the International Broadcast Centre (IBC) in Leipzig. Its post-event account also described support for UEFA’s Football Service Platform, website and mobile apps.
The logistics behind a temporary enterprise
A football championship is a temporary organisation spread across stadiums, hotels, training locations, offices and broadcast facilities. It needs both digital systems and the devices, communications and people to operate them. Atos’s EURO 2024 work therefore involved service desks and application teams as well as equipment and infrastructure.

Two reports give different snapshots of the scale. Computer Weekly’s July 2024 report cited roughly 150,000 accreditation requests, 15,000 hotel bookings, 17,000 transport transfers, 100,000 meal bookings, 3,500 uniform requests and 1,500 deliveries. It also described around 3,000 mobile devices, 1,000 televisions, 1,200 monitors, 300 printers and 70 video-conferencing units, alongside thousands of kilometres of temporary fibre connecting tournament sites.
Atos’s later account put accreditation requests at 130,000 and listed a different equipment snapshot: 1,480 laptops, 1,500 mobile phones, 335 tablets, 80 video-conferencing systems, 1,500 access-control devices and 975 televisions. Those figures should be treated as separate reported counts, not combined into a single definitive inventory. They may reflect different scopes, definitions or points in the event lifecycle.
Venue teams, central monitoring and the Leipzig IBC
Support combined local response with central coordination. Each of the 10 stadiums had an IT service desk. On-site venue managers, application coordinators and support specialists could handle immediate issues; problems they could not resolve were escalated to UEFA’s IT Command Center. Remote teams supported the operation from Leipzig and other locations, including Nyon, Madrid, Barcelona and Tenerife.

The IBC in Leipzig was more than a television production site. It functioned as a central hub for IT and broadcasting operations, technical support, monitoring and data distribution. Computer Weekly reported around 130 dedicated IT staff at the centre, with approximately 70 more supporting remotely. It also reported that the IBC supported around 130 broadcasters operating across about 200 territories.

This arrangement illustrates the trade-off in event support: central teams can maintain a broad view and coordinate consistent responses, while people at each venue can inspect equipment and respond quickly to local conditions. Both are needed when the event cannot simply pause for a repair.
Match data and digital services for audiences
Atos’s Football Service Platform distributed information such as fixtures, results, line-ups, live match events, standings, statistics, player status and rankings to UEFA stakeholders, broadcasters, media and digital services. The official website and app offered public-facing information and interactive features alongside those data services.

Atos reported almost 1.3 billion email and app push notifications and 451 million cumulative web and app sessions for the tournament. It also reported 4.18 million new app registrations and a customer-relationship database of 47.2 million accounts. These are company-reported measures; they indicate the scale of digital activity, but do not by themselves establish unique viewers or prove how individual services performed.
Atos also said it used AWS as a long-term cloud partner for cloud-platform solutions and infrastructure that could scale with demand. That does not mean AWS independently ran EURO 2024 or that every tournament system was hosted on AWS. Likewise, the Football Service Platform should not be confused with on-field officiating technologies such as VAR, semi-automated offside technology, goal-line technology or the connected match ball. UEFA describes those football technologies separately.
Cybersecurity: attacks are not the same as impact
A tournament website, credential system, access-control process and data-distribution service present different security risks. Public-facing services can be targeted to disrupt availability; identities and credentials must be protected against misuse; and failures in access systems can affect movement at venues. Broadcast and match-data systems also require reliable protection and escalation procedures.

Computer Weekly reported UEFA’s CIO as saying the tournament faced daily attacks and describing a distributed denial-of-service incident that generated 90 million hits against one website in less than 10 minutes. That is an attributed account, not an independently audited measure of the threat environment. Atos later said security and cyber incidents had zero impact on the tournament. That reported outcome does not mean there were no attacks; it means the company said incidents did not disrupt the event.
Why Atos called it a “moving train”
The phrase is an analogy for the continuous lifecycle of major-event technology, not a technical term or an admission of improvisation. Planning and procurement for the next event can begin while another is live. Equipment is installed, tested, supported through competition, then dismantled, transported, refurbished or reused. At the same time, each host location brings its own venues, partners and operating requirements.
Computer Weekly reported that the temporary IBC structure was intended for recycling or movement to a future tournament, and that some Atos equipment would be used at the 2025 Women’s EURO in Switzerland. EURO 2024 also coincided with Atos’s work on the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. This recurrence helps explain why event providers develop reusable processes, equipment and command structures rather than treating every tournament as a one-off deployment. Atos describes its wider work through its Major Events service.
Several organisations, not one technology supplier
Large-event IT is a multi-party operation. UEFA owns and governs the competition; Atos supplied key IT services and applications; cloud and connectivity providers contribute particular infrastructure; broadcasters and host authorities have their own responsibilities. Deutsche Telekom, for example, was named UEFA’s official national partner and had a venue and base-camp networking role. That is distinct from Atos’s application and service-delivery scope. UEFA announced the Deutsche Telekom partnership.
The practical challenge is coordinating boundaries: who owns an incident, which team can change a system, how a venue issue reaches the command centre, and how security or service continuity is maintained while multiple providers work together. Temporary infrastructure adds another deadline—systems must be removed or redeployed after the event, not just kept running until the final whistle.
The operational lesson
EURO 2024 shows why major-event technology cannot be measured only by what fans see on a screen. A polished app and uninterrupted data feed matter, but so do credentials that open the right doors, devices that work in the right locations, support teams that can respond in person, and escalation paths that function under pressure. The “moving train” is the lifecycle behind that continuity: build, operate, protect, dismantle and reuse, while the next event is already approaching.
