Home Depot began a phased rollout of contactless payments, including Apple Pay, at U.S. stores in October 2024. The company said it expected the service to reach most stores and registers later that year, but the public information available does not confirm that every location or checkout lane now accepts Apple Pay. If you plan to rely on it, bring a backup payment method.
What Home Depot announced
Home Depot had been an Apple Pay holdout after dropping support years earlier. In October 2024, customers began reporting that contactless payments were working at some stores. 9to5Mac reported the rollout on October 8, and the following day quoted a Home Depot spokesperson confirming that the company had begun rolling out contactless payments in U.S. stores. MacRumors also covered the rollout.
The company’s wording was “contactless,” a category broader than Apple Pay. It can include contactless physical cards and other mobile wallets, depending on the terminal and the store’s payment configuration. Contemporary reporting connected the rollout to Apple Pay, but the distinction matters: a statement about contactless capability is not a promise that every wallet, card or register will work everywhere.
Home Depot said it expected contactless payment support to reach most stores and registers later in 2024. That was a forecast, not confirmation that the rollout was completed. The available official payment information does not provide a current store-by-store Apple Pay directory or establish that every register accepts it.

Where Apple Pay may work
During the initial rollout, availability varied by store and register. Early reports suggested that some locations enabled Apple Pay first at self-checkout, while staffed lanes could lag. Treat that as an early observed pattern, not a permanent chainwide rule: local terminal hardware, software and rollout timing can affect what a particular lane accepts.
Look for the Apple Pay logo, the contactless payment symbol or a prompt on the reader. Those are useful clues, but they are not a guarantee. Apple notes that a contactless symbol alone does not ensure Apple Pay is enabled; the merchant must have contactless functionality active and accept the network associated with the card in your Wallet.

There is no official Home Depot store-by-store Apple Pay checker identified in the available sources. If tap-to-pay is important for your visit, contact the store or ask an associate before you reach the register. Keeping a physical card or another accepted payment method with you avoids a checkout surprise.

Apple Pay requires a supported device, an eligible card in Wallet, a participating card issuer and a terminal configured for contactless payments. Having a card in Wallet does not mean that every merchant will accept its network or that every transaction will be approved. A merchant or card issuer may also require a PIN, signature or other verification.
Does Home Depot accept Apple Pay online?
The 2024 announcement concerned contactless payments in U.S. stores; it does not establish online Apple Pay support. Home Depot’s online payment FAQ lists major card networks and Home Depot consumer credit cards and commercial credit accounts, but does not list Apple Pay. The sources therefore do not confirm Apple Pay as a payment option on HomeDepot.com or in the Home Depot app.

What to do if a tap fails
A failed tap does not necessarily mean Apple Pay is unavailable at the whole store. The reader may not be enabled, the cashier may need to select a payment type first, or that lane may not yet support contactless payments. The Wallet card’s network, an issuer verification requirement or a malfunctioning reader can also be the issue.
- Ask the cashier whether the reader is enabled for contactless payment.
- If practical, try another register or self-checkout lane.
- Use a physical card or another payment method the store accepts if the tap still fails.
- Keep your receipt. If you may need to return the purchase, ask the store how it handles a transaction made with Apple Pay; do not assume every return procedure is identical to a physical-card purchase.
Apple Pay uses the eligible debit or credit card added to Wallet, so that card’s rewards and benefits generally remain subject to the issuer’s usual terms. Apple says customers can continue earning eligible card rewards when using Apple Pay, but a particular Home Depot offer, financing promotion or account benefit may have its own conditions. Check the relevant terms rather than assuming a mobile-wallet purchase qualifies.

Current status
Home Depot publicly confirmed the start of its U.S. contactless rollout in October 2024, and reporting identified Apple Pay among the supported options. The public information available does not confirm that every Home Depot register accepts Apple Pay today or that it is available for online checkout. Apple Pay has no separate Apple service-plan requirement; the practical prerequisites are a supported device, an eligible card and a terminal with contactless payments enabled.
