The Garden Island, a newspaper serving Kauai, discontinued its AI-generated presenters James and Rose in November 2024, after a trial of about two months. The presenters did not go rogue: the reported problems were awkward visuals, mispronunciations, flat delivery and a largely negative public response. The paper’s parent company confirmed the broadcasts had ended but did not give a detailed reason.
What happened to the AI presenters?
The Garden Island used James and Rose, AI-generated news presenters made by Israeli company Caledo, in short broadcasts published twice a week on YouTube, Facebook and Instagram. The trial began in September 2024 and ended roughly two months later; the last broadcast cited in coverage was on November 4. The paper’s parent, Oahu Publications, confirmed the program was discontinued. WIRED reported the end of the experiment.
“Fired” is a comic shorthand, not a literal employment story: James and Rose were digital presenters, not human newsroom employees. They are also more accurately described as hosts or anchors than reporters. The system presented material that had already been written; reporting does not establish that the avatars investigated stories, interviewed sources or gathered news themselves.
What was bizarre about the broadcasts?
The problems were visible and audible, rather than evidence of independent or unauthorized behavior. Early videos showed James with an unblinking stare and vibrating hands; Rose’s mouth sometimes failed to sync with her speech. Both delivered stories in a stiff, largely monotone style, including subjects that called for different emotional registers. WIRED’s launch coverage described the presentation issues.

- Visual glitches: James’s blinking and hand movements looked unnatural, while Rose had lip-sync problems.
- Pronunciation errors: Reports noted mistakes with Hawaiian names and words such as “Hanalei,” “TV” and “hale.” In the final broadcast, Rose reportedly said “referee” instead of “rifle” while discussing an air-rifle championship.
- Thin commentary: The hosts sometimes added generic observations without supplying useful reporting or local context.
- Unsuited tone: Their flat delivery made it difficult to convey the significance or emotion of different stories.
James reportedly became more natural in limited ways: after moving from lead anchor to second anchor, he blinked more regularly, and his constant hand vibration gave way to a single emphatic gesture. Those adjustments did not resolve the broader issues of pronunciation, tone and credibility.
Why did the newspaper try AI hosts?
Caledo’s platform turned multiple prewritten articles into a video conversation between AI hosts. The pitch was practical: help small newsrooms produce video, reach people who prefer social video to text, publish more frequently and create advertising inventory without building a conventional broadcast operation. The premise addressed real constraints. The Garden Island served Kauai, whose population was described in the reporting as about 73,000, with a small reporting staff. But turning written work into a video is not the same as adding reporting capacity. An avatar cannot attend a public meeting, cultivate a source, recognize a familiar local name or answer a resident’s questions. Those forms of presence and accountability are central to the value of community journalism.
How did viewers respond?
Comments described the presenters as creepy, frightening and nightmarish, and criticized the format as a poor fit for local news. The reporting characterized the visible response as overwhelmingly negative. That is evidence of a strong reaction among commenters, not a representative survey of every viewer. Honolulu Civil Beat, a local nonprofit newsroom, also invoked the experiment in fundraising language about algorithmically generated local news.

Negative response likely contributed to the decision to stop the broadcasts, but Oahu Publications did not publicly identify backlash as the sole reason. Disclosure that the presenters were AI did not make the experience feel credible or locally grounded to the critics quoted in coverage.

There is no evidence that James and Rose displaced a specific existing broadcast job: the newspaper did not previously have a comparable video program. That does not settle the broader labor question. A newsroom deciding whether to spend on AI presentation could instead spend on reporters, photographers, editors or community engagement. The trial raises that resource-allocation concern, but it is not evidence that this deployment caused layoffs.

Was the experiment financially successful?
That cannot be established from the reported information. Caledo said advertising embedded in the videos was meant to offset the system’s cost, but it did not disclose the price. WIRED reported no apparent sale of an advertisement specifically for the videos. Each broadcast identified Longs Drugs as a sponsor; a CVS spokesperson said Longs had an existing sponsorship arrangement with Oahu Publications and had not been notified that its logo would appear in the AI videos. That distinction matters: an existing corporate sponsorship does not by itself establish approval for a particular placement.
The available facts therefore point to an unproven advertising-offset plan and an unresolved branding issue, not a documented profit or loss. Caledo called the experiment a success and said it planned to expand the technology to other US newspapers, arguing that it did work that otherwise would not have been done. Those are the company’s claims; they do not independently demonstrate audience growth, revenue or journalistic success at The Garden Island.
What the case shows about AI in a newsroom
The Garden Island experiment is best understood as an automated presentation trial, not a case of autonomous AI reporting. AI can package and distribute existing material, but that does not automatically create original reporting, local knowledge or trust. For a small newspaper, the relevant calculation is not only whether a system can produce a video; it is whether the video serves readers well enough to justify its cost, human oversight and potential effect on the publication’s credibility.
Contemporaneous coverage used the more sensational framing of “bizarre behavior.” Futurism reported the story on November 21, 2024. The documented conduct, however, was a series of conspicuous presentation and production shortcomings—not a newsroom takeover or AI misconduct.
