Nominal was valued at $1 billion after raising an $80 million Series B-2 acceleration round announced March 5, 2026. Founders Fund led the financing, bringing the company’s reported proceeds across its 2025 Series B and 2026 round to $155 million. The valuation is a private financing-round figure—not a public-market valuation—and the bigger question is whether Nominal can turn defense-sector momentum into a durable industrial software business.
What happened to Nominal
U.S.-based hardware-testing software company Nominal announced an $80 million Series B-2 acceleration round at a $1 billion valuation on March 5, 2026. Founders Fund led the round, with participation from Sequoia Capital, Lux Capital, General Catalyst, Lightspeed and Red Glass.
The financing followed a $75 million Series B led by Sequoia Capital in 2025. Taken together, the two reported rounds total $155 million in roughly 10 months. That does not necessarily mean Nominal raised $155 million in one financing or that this is its complete lifetime fundraising total.

Nominal’s announcement said the company had more than 60 customers worldwide and was expanding across aerospace, defense, robotics, energy and advanced manufacturing.

Nominal’s funding timeline
- 2025: Nominal raises a $75 million Series B led by Sequoia Capital.
- March 5, 2026: Founders Fund leads an $80 million Series B-2 acceleration round at a $1 billion valuation.
- April 30, 2026: Nominal announces its acquisition of Fid Labs to add AI-agent capabilities for robotics and hardware workflows.
The company’s official materials use inconsistent dates for the earlier Series B, so the safest description is that it occurred in 2025.
What Nominal sells
Hardware companies often spread test information across telemetry systems, lab instruments, spreadsheets, custom scripts, databases, video, simulation outputs and operating logs. Engineers then have to synchronize that information, determine what happened, reproduce failures and decide whether a design or procedure should change.
Nominal’s pitch is to provide a connected software layer for that process. Its products divide the workflow into three main components:

Nominal Core
Nominal Core is the cloud and collaboration layer. According to the company, it organizes high-rate telemetry, logs, video, simulation results and documents. It supports live monitoring, alarms, system-health views, replay, trend analysis, reporting and collaborative review.
Core is also positioned for tracking performance and configuration across prototypes, production assets and fielded systems. In practical terms, the aim is to give engineering teams a common place to inspect what a system did and compare results over time.
Nominal Connect
Nominal Connect is the edge and test-execution component. It is designed to automate test operations, support hardware-in-the-loop applications, connect live systems and test environments, and deploy repeatable test code across manufacturing or test stations.

A simplified workflow looks like this:
Hardware or test rig → Connect captures and automates → Core stores and analyzes → engineers review results → designs or procedures are updated
The value proposition is not simply another dashboard. It is the connection between test execution, data capture, traceability and engineering decisions.
Nominal Instro
Nominal Instro is an open-source Python instrumentation library. Nominal says it allows teams to write test logic once and change hardware with fewer code changes.
Instro is one component of the broader platform, not the entire Nominal product. Teams still need to evaluate the commercial platform’s deployment model, integrations, security controls and operating cost for their particular environment.
Why defense and aerospace were the initial market
Defense and aerospace are attractive markets for hardware-testing software because their systems are complex, expensive to test and costly to fail. Aircraft, autonomous vehicles, propulsion systems and other platforms can generate large quantities of telemetry while operating under demanding safety and reliability requirements.

Faster access to trustworthy test data can help engineers identify problems earlier, repeat experiments more consistently and shorten the cycle between a test and a design change. These industries also have strong demand for software infrastructure around newer autonomous and software-defined systems.

That opportunity should not be confused with automatic proof of broad product-market fit. A defense customer may be running a limited pilot, a single program or a production-wide deployment; public sources do not disclose Nominal’s revenue by customer, deployment depth or contract structure.
Customers and reported traction
Nominal’s March announcement said it had more than 60 customers worldwide and claimed that four of the five largest defense contractors were customers. The company has also identified or been associated with customers including Hermeus, General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Palantir, the U.S. Air Force and Shield AI.
TechCrunch separately reported marquee customers including Anduril, Pratt Miller Motorsports and nuclear-energy company Antares.

There is no public revenue, annual recurring revenue, margin, burn-rate or customer-concentration disclosure in the cited material.
Why Founders Fund led the round
Trae Stephens, an Anduril co-founder and Founders Fund partner, led the investment. Nominal CEO Cameron McCord previously served as a U.S. Navy submarine officer and worked at Anduril. That creates an evident network and strategic connection between the investor, Nominal’s leadership and at least one important customer relationship.
It would be too simple, however, to explain the valuation solely through the Anduril connection. The broader investment thesis is that defense, aerospace, robotics, energy and advanced manufacturing companies need reliable software for testing, telemetry, automation and operational feedback.

Expansion beyond defense
Nominal said the new capital would support product development, international expansion, strategic acquisitions and new business lines across the hardware-data ecosystem. The company is targeting automotive, robotics, energy, motorsports and advanced manufacturing as well as defense and aerospace.

Each market has different buying processes, incumbent systems, security requirements, data formats and expectations around deployment and price. A defense program may tolerate a high-touch implementation for a critical system, while an automotive or manufacturing customer may demand standardized integrations, predictable rollout economics and fast payback.
Nominal must also operate across the cloud and edge. Hardware testing can occur in bandwidth-limited facilities, disconnected environments, geographically distributed sites or sensitive government settings. Public materials do not establish Nominal’s complete deployment architecture or which specific security certifications it holds.
The Fid Labs acquisition and Nominal’s AI strategy
On April 30, 2026, Nominal announced that it had acquired Fid Labs to bring AI-native agents to the hardware-engineering lifecycle. The deal suggests that Nominal wants to move beyond storing and analyzing test data toward helping engineers automate parts of robotics and hardware workflows.
That is strategically significant, but it is not proof that a mature, broadly deployed AI product was already generating measurable customer outcomes when the March financing was announced. The commercial impact of the acquisition remains dependent on integration, customer adoption and demonstrable improvements in engineering work.
How Nominal compares with existing tools
Nominal should not be described as a universal replacement for established engineering software. Its positioning overlaps several categories:

Nominal’s strongest differentiation claim is therefore a unified workflow: test automation, hardware-in-the-loop control, high-rate telemetry, analysis, collaboration, asset context and production validation. Whether that is superior to a customer’s existing toolchain depends on data rates, hardware interfaces, security requirements, deployment constraints and total cost of ownership.
Technical and business risks
Several risks could challenge the company’s expansion:
- Customer concentration: Large defense accounts may represent substantial usage, but a few customers could also account for a disproportionate share of revenue.
- Procurement cycles: A customer logo does not necessarily indicate a broad deployment, recurring revenue or fast payment.
- Integration burden: Customers may need connections to legacy instrumentation, simulation systems, manufacturing software, proprietary rigs and internal databases.
- Data quality: Unsynchronized telemetry and video, missing calibration information, inconsistent metadata or weak asset tracking can produce misleading conclusions.
- Operational risk: Automated procedures can repeat an incorrect or unsafe test unless validation and authorization controls are strong.
- Infrastructure risk: High-rate data creates storage, bandwidth and query-cost challenges. Centralizing mission-critical data also increases the importance of access control, backups and cybersecurity.
- Valuation risk: A $1 billion private valuation reflects the price investors accepted in a financing round. It does not guarantee liquidity or establish what a future buyer would pay.
Public sources also do not provide independent benchmarks for Nominal’s uptime, latency, performance, return on investment or total cost of ownership.

The valuation provides clear evidence that well-known investors—including Founders Fund and Sequoia Capital—believe Nominal could become important infrastructure for modern hardware development. The rapid financing pace also indicates strong investor interest in defense and industrial software.
It does not, by itself, prove that Nominal has achieved public-company-scale revenue, broad commercial adoption or a defensible lead over incumbent tools. The central business test is whether the company can convert demanding defense use cases into repeatable deployments across multiple industrial markets without allowing implementation and security requirements to overwhelm its economics.
Bottom line
Nominal’s $80 million Series B-2 gives it a $1 billion private valuation and brings its reported proceeds across two rounds to $155 million. Its products address a real engineering problem: connecting test execution, high-rate hardware data, analysis and operational feedback.
The company has credible momentum in defense and aerospace, but its larger promise is becoming an infrastructure layer for software-defined physical systems. That promise remains unproven. Nominal’s next stage will depend on deployment depth, customer concentration, security and integration performance, and whether its expansion into robotics, energy, automotive and advanced manufacturing produces repeatable business rather than only an impressive financing story.
