This is a historical 2022 incident, not a newly disclosed 2026 breach.
Gemini’s notice said the company’s own account information and systems were not impacted and that customer accounts and funds remained secure. Those are company assertions; the available evidence does not establish a direct compromise of Gemini’s core systems.
Gemini exchange—not Google Gemini
The incident concerns Gemini, the cryptocurrency exchange founded by Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss. It is unrelated to Google’s Gemini artificial-intelligence products, which can generate separate privacy and security headlines.

Why email addresses and partial phone numbers still matter
Contact information can make a scam appear credible even when it does not provide account access. An attacker may send a fake Gemini security alert, withdrawal notice or account-lock message containing enough personal detail to persuade the recipient that it is genuine.

Potential follow-on attacks include:
- Fake requests to verify an account or reset a password.
- Fraudulent Gemini customer-support messages.
- Requests for passwords, one-time codes, seed phrases or private keys.
- Phone-based impersonation and SIM-swapping attempts.
- Cross-referencing Gemini data with information from other breaches.
Knowing an email address and part of a phone number does not prove that a caller or message is legitimate. Gemini, a bank or a wallet provider should never need your seed phrase or private key.
What Gemini customers should do
1. Secure the exchange account
- Reach Gemini by typing its official address yourself or using a trusted bookmark. Do not use links in unsolicited messages.
- Change your Gemini password if it has been reused anywhere else. Use a unique password generated for the account.
- Enable multifactor authentication. An authenticator app is generally safer than SMS because phone-number takeover is a known attack path.
- Use a hardware security key where supported. It offers stronger phishing resistance, although you should keep a backup key or recovery method.
- Review devices, sessions, withdrawal addresses, API keys, recovery details and recent activity. Remove anything unfamiliar.
Gemini’s historical guidance recommended two-factor authentication and hardware security keys. Menu labels may have changed since 2022, so do not rely on old instructions to find a particular setting.

2. Protect the email account
- Use a unique email password.
- Enable phishing-resistant multifactor authentication or a security key where available.
- Review forwarding rules, recovery addresses, logged-in sessions and connected applications.
- Treat unexpected password-reset messages as possible attack signals.
Securing Gemini alone is not enough if an attacker can take over the email account used for password resets.
3. Protect the phone number
- Set or verify an account PIN with your mobile carrier.
- Ask about port-out and SIM-transfer protections.
- Never disclose one-time codes to callers or supposed support agents.
4. Contact Gemini if anything looks wrong
Escalate immediately if you see an unfamiliar login, withdrawal, device, API key, withdrawal address, changed contact detail or unexpected password-reset confirmation. Gemini’s current support guidance directs users to Support, then Fraudulent Activity, followed by My Account Is Compromised: Gemini’s compromised-account instructions.
How to recognize a fake Gemini message
- It creates urgency by threatening immediate account closure or withdrawal restrictions.
- It asks for a password, one-time code, seed phrase or private key.
- It tells you to move cryptocurrency to a “safe,” “temporary” or “secure” wallet.
- The link uses a misspelled, unrelated or shortened domain.
- A supposed support agent contacts you first through social media, text or an encrypted messaging app.
Do not click the link or open attachments. Navigate independently to Gemini’s official website or support center. Remember that a scammer can know your email address and partial phone number without being affiliated with Gemini.

Can you check whether your information was included?
The available sources do not establish an official Gemini tool for checking inclusion in the alleged 5.7-million-record dataset. Avoid unverified “Gemini breach check” websites, especially ones that ask for passwords or require you to upload personal information.
