Google’s smartphone shipments increased approximately 20% year over year in the United States during the third quarter of 2024, according to Counterpoint Research. The Pixel 9 Pro XL helped Google gain visibility in the premium market, entering Counterpoint’s top-ten premium smartphones for the quarter.
But the headline needs context. The figure measures U.S. channel shipments—not confirmed worldwide consumer sales—and Google launched the Pixel 9 family much earlier than the Pixel 8 series. That timing put more new Pixel inventory inside Q3 2024, making the comparison favorable to Google.
What the 20% figure actually measures
The reported increase applies to four specific things:

- Brand: Google’s Pixel smartphone business
- Metric: Shipments, sometimes called sell-in, into carrier and retail channels
- Geography: The United States
- Period: Q3 2024 compared with Q3 2023
Counterpoint reported that the overall U.S. smartphone market declined 4% year over year during the quarter, making Google’s increase stand out. A separate Counterpoint market-share page gives Google’s growth as 19%, so “about 20%” is the safest way to describe the result and reflects a rounding or source-version difference.

Shipments are not the same as completed consumer purchases. A phone shipped to a carrier or retailer may remain in inventory before being sold, returned, discounted, or replaced. The data therefore does not establish Google’s exact sell-through, revenue, profit, or number of U.S. customers.
The launch calendar gave Pixel a major advantage
The biggest reason for the year-over-year increase was timing. Google’s Pixel 8 series launched in October 2023, meaning relatively little Pixel 8 launch activity occurred during Q3 2023. The Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro XL became available in August 2024, while the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro Fold followed in early September.
As a result, much more of the Pixel 9 launch cycle fell inside Q3 2024 than the Pixel 8 launch cycle did inside the year-earlier quarter.

This does not make Google’s growth meaningless. Launching earlier can be a deliberate commercial strategy that improves retail visibility and gives a product more time to compete. It does mean that the 20% comparison is not a clean test of equivalent launch-period demand.

What role did the Pixel 9 Pro XL play?
The Pixel 9 Pro XL was strategically important because it gave Google a large-screen premium flagship at the same time that the company introduced a smaller Pixel 9 Pro with broadly comparable Pro-level positioning.
- Pixel 9 Pro XL: Large premium flagship
- Pixel 9 Pro: Smaller premium flagship
- Pixel 9: Lower-priced mainstream flagship
- Pixel 9 Pro Fold: Foldable flagship in a separate category
Counterpoint said the Pixel 9 Pro XL entered the top ten best-selling premium smartphones in the United States during Q3 2024. That is meaningful evidence that Google was gaining attention in a segment dominated by Apple and Samsung.
However, the available report does not give the Pro XL’s exact ranking, unit volume, shipment share, or contribution to Google’s total. The 20% brand-level increase includes the broader Pixel 9 lineup and potentially older models. The evidence supports calling the Pro XL a visible premium success or major contributor—not the sole cause of Google’s growth.

According to Omdia’s August 2024 product table, the Pixel 9 Pro XL launched at $1,099 in the United States and offered a 6.8-inch display, a 5,060mAh battery, up to 1TB of storage, and up to 16GB of RAM.

Google also emphasized camera processing, software integration, and Gemini-related AI features across the Pixel 9 family. Those features may have helped demand, but the cited market data does not isolate the effect of hardware, AI, trade-in offers, carrier promotions, or advertising.
How Google compared with other brands
Counterpoint’s Q3 comparison placed Google’s growth against a contracting U.S. market:
- U.S. smartphone market: down 4% year over year
- Google: up approximately 20%
- Motorola: up 21%
- Samsung: down 13%
- Apple: down 2%
These figures show that Google and Motorola performed better than the market during the measured quarter. They do not prove that Pixel buyers switched from Apple or Samsung. Brand-level shipment changes do not identify individual customer decisions.
Secondary coverage of the Counterpoint data reported that Pixel reached approximately 4% of U.S. smartphone shipment share in Q3 2024, described as a third-quarter record for Pixel. That is a notable improvement in visibility, but Google remained much smaller than Apple and Samsung in absolute U.S. market presence.

What the data proves—and what it does not
What it proves
- Google’s U.S. smartphone shipments grew approximately 19% to 20% year over year in Q3 2024.
- The growth occurred while the total U.S. smartphone market declined.
- The earlier Pixel 9 launch was a primary reason more Google shipments were counted during the quarter.
- The Pixel 9 Pro XL reached the U.S. top ten for premium smartphones during Q3 2024.
- Pixel’s U.S. shipment share was approximately 4%, according to secondary reporting of Counterpoint’s data.
What it does not prove
- That Google’s global Pixel sales rose 20%.
- That consumers bought 20% more Pixel phones.
- That the Pixel 9 Pro XL generated all or most of the increase.
- That Google took customers directly from Apple or Samsung.
- That Google’s Pixel revenue or profit rose by the same percentage.
- That the Pixel 9 launch created durable, long-term market momentum.
The cited material does not provide Google’s exact unit shipments, model-by-model sales split, average selling price, promotional costs, margins, returns, or inventory levels.

It is an encouraging result, but one quarter is not enough to establish a durable breakthrough. Google benefited from both product availability and calendar placement: the Pixel 9 arrived earlier, giving it more weeks to generate shipments in Q3 than the Pixel 8 had in the comparable quarter.
The stronger test would be whether Google maintained or expanded its U.S. shipment share in later quarters after the launch-timing advantage faded. Sustained gains would require evidence that demand continued beyond launch inventory, promotions, and early-adopter interest.

What this means for someone considering a Pixel 9 Pro XL
The market result may be useful context, but it is not a buying recommendation. By 2026, the Pixel 9 Pro XL is an older generation. Buyers should compare its actual current price—not its original $1,099 launch price—with newer Pixel models and competing Samsung or Apple flagships.
Before buying, check:
- Remaining software-support period
- Battery health and physical condition
- Whether the phone is new, refurbished, or used
- Warranty and return terms
- Storage capacity and price difference between variants
- Carrier lock and compatibility with your network
- Whether a newer Pixel offers a better long-term value
The Pro XL makes the most sense for buyers who specifically want a large Pixel with Google’s camera and software experience and can find it at a substantial discount. A smaller Pixel 9 Pro may suit buyers who want similar Pro positioning in a less bulky phone, while a current Pixel generation may be preferable for shoppers prioritizing the longest remaining support window.
