Alphabet’s first-quarter 2025 results showed strong growth in Search, advertising and Cloud, while CEO Sundar Pichai argued that AI was gaining traction across Google’s products and operations. But the quarter did not establish how much revenue AI itself generated—or whether that revenue will justify the company’s rising infrastructure costs. Advertising remained the financial base, and management flagged trade-policy uncertainty even as demand held up.
What Alphabet reported for Q1 2025
Alphabet announced results on April 24, 2025, for the quarter ended March 31. Revenue increased 12% year over year to $90.234 billion, or 14% in constant currency. Operating income rose to $30.606 billion from $25.472 billion, and operating margin expanded to 34% from 32%. Net income was $34.540 billion, up from $23.662 billion, while diluted earnings per share climbed to $2.81 from $1.89. These are reported company figures in Alphabet’s Q1 earnings release.
The net-income and EPS increases should not be read as a direct measure of operating growth: Alphabet reported $11.2 billion in other income, including an $8.0 billion unrealized gain on an investment in a private company. The operating-income and margin figures provide a clearer view of the quarter’s operating performance.

Where growth came from
Search and advertising remained central
Search and other revenue reached $50.702 billion. On the earnings call, Pichai said Search continued to grow at a double-digit rate. Total Google advertising revenue was $66.885 billion; YouTube ads grew to $8.927 billion, while Google Network revenue declined to $7.256 billion. The figures underline both the resilience of Google’s ad business in the quarter and Alphabet’s continuing exposure to advertising demand.
AI Overviews were presented as a product-engagement milestone, not as a separate revenue stream. Alphabet did not report revenue from AI Overviews as its own line item, so their reported usage cannot be converted into an AI revenue figure. The segment results are in the company filing; Pichai’s remarks are in the earnings-call transcript.

Cloud grew, with demand outstripping capacity
Google Cloud revenue rose 28% to $12.260 billion, and operating income increased to $2.177 billion from $900 million. Alphabet attributed growth to core Cloud products as well as AI infrastructure and generative-AI solutions. Management said demand exceeded available capacity. That is evidence of customer interest, but also a constraint: how quickly Alphabet can bring new capacity online may affect when it can serve demand and recognize related growth. See the call transcript and reported segment results.
Subscriptions added another source of growth
Revenue from subscriptions, platforms and devices was $10.379 billion, versus $8.739 billion a year earlier. Pichai said Alphabet had more than 270 million paid subscriptions, with YouTube and Google One among the key drivers. The subscription count is a company-reported total; it is not an AI-user count. Pichai’s prepared remarks are available on Google’s blog.
What Pichai’s AI-use figures do—and do not—show
Pichai described AI as spreading across Google’s products, developer tools, enterprise services and internal work. The figures he cited measure different kinds of activity; they should not be added together or treated as a single count of AI users or as proof of AI revenue.
- Consumer products: Alphabet said AI Overviews had more than 1.5 billion monthly users. Pichai also described an early positive response to AI Mode, a more exploratory Search experience, and said its queries were longer and more complex than traditional Search queries.
- Developers: In prepared remarks, Pichai said active users of AI Studio and the Gemini API had grown more than 200% since the start of 2025. He also said Gemma open models had exceeded 140 million downloads. Those are separate measures—developer activity and model downloads—not paid customers or revenue.
- Enterprise: Google Cloud demand included AI infrastructure and generative-AI solutions, with demand exceeding available capacity, as management said on the earnings call.
- Google’s own operations: Pichai said more than 30% of code checked in at Google involved employees accepting AI-suggested solutions. This does not mean AI independently wrote more than 30% of Google’s code. He described adoption as early, and the company did not quantify a company-wide labor-cost reduction or productivity gain.
The usage and adoption figures come from Pichai’s earnings-call remarks and prepared remarks. They show that AI was being used across more of Google’s stack; by themselves, they do not establish retention, profitability or incremental revenue.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAI in Search: engagement is not the same as monetization
Alphabet’s argument was that AI could make Search more useful and capable, while the existing business continued to grow. More than 1.5 billion monthly AI Overviews users and Pichai’s description of longer, more complex AI Mode queries support a claim about reach and changing search behavior. Double-digit Search growth provides a financial result for Search overall.
Those facts do not isolate AI’s contribution. Alphabet did not disclose a separate AI Overviews revenue figure, nor did it quantify how much of Search growth came from AI rather than other factors. The open business question is whether AI experiences expand useful activity and advertiser value, or shift clicks and economics away from conventional results. Why the $75 billion investment plan matters
Alphabet maintained an approximate $75 billion capital-expenditure plan for 2025. The plan was intended to expand technical infrastructure supporting Google Services, Cloud and DeepMind; it should not be described as spending exclusively on AI. Q1 capital expenditures were $17.2 billion, and contemporaneous reporting put 2024 spending at approximately $50 billion. The annual plan is management’s approximate outlook, not a final full-year spend figure. See the earnings call and Reuters coverage via Investing.com.
Management said the spending was directed primarily to technical infrastructure, with servers the largest component, followed by data centers. More capacity could let Alphabet meet Cloud demand and support AI features across its products. The trade-off is that infrastructure does not produce returns automatically: it must be deployed, used efficiently and monetized. Alphabet said depreciation had already risen about 31% year over year in Q1 and would accelerate through 2025, putting pressure on future costs. Capacity-delivery timing can also make Cloud growth uneven from quarter to quarter, even when customer demand is strong.
What “uncertain economy” meant for advertising
Alphabet did not report a broad collapse in ad demand: Google advertising revenue grew, and executives said some categories, including finance and retail, remained strong. But advertising growth had slowed relative to the prior quarter, and the company said it was monitoring macroeconomic risks.

One specific concern was U.S. trade policy and changes to the de minimis exemption, which executives identified as a potential headwind for retailers based in Asia-Pacific that advertise to U.S. consumers. Reuters coverage cited Temu and Shein as examples of advertisers that could reduce U.S. spending; those companies were examples in contemporaneous reporting, not a complete measure of market demand. Advertising’s size in Alphabet’s business makes changes in retail and consumer spending consequential even while other segments grow. See management’s call and the Reuters report syndicated by Investing.com.
What remains to be proved—and what to watch
The quarter supports a measured reading: Alphabet had growing AI engagement alongside strong financial results, but the published metrics do not settle whether its AI investments will deliver attractive incremental returns. For investors, technology buyers and partners, the useful distinction is between adoption evidence and evidence of durable economics.
- Search economics: Track Search growth as AI features expand, and look for disclosures that distinguish AI-related monetization from overall Search results.
- Cloud capacity and returns: Watch whether new infrastructure becomes available in time to serve demand, and whether Cloud growth and operating income keep pace with the investment.
- Costs and margins: Compare depreciation growth with revenue and operating income as infrastructure spending flows through expenses.
- AI quality and retention: Monthly reach or downloads alone do not show whether users return, complete tasks or continue using paid products.
- Advertising conditions: Monitor retail and Asia-Pacific advertiser trends alongside broader ad revenue, particularly as trade-policy changes take effect.
- Competition and regulation: Pichai’s adoption figures do not establish Gemini’s market share or resolve Alphabet’s legal, privacy, copyright and AI-regulation exposure.
Competition, model economics and potential Search cannibalization remain strategic uncertainties rather than conclusions established by this quarter’s reported figures. Strong usage can coexist with high inference costs or pricing pressure; the earnings release and call did not provide a full long-term margin picture for AI. Likewise, the quarter’s results do not resolve regulatory or legal risks.
