Google Pixel had an estimated 37.9 million cumulative shipments from its 2016 launch through 2023, according to IDC analyst Francisco Jeronimo. That is the source of the “nearly 40 million” milestone. A roughly 10-million-unit increase can be inferred by comparing that figure with an earlier cumulative estimate, but it is not an official Google sales announcement or a confirmed calendar-year total.
What the Pixel shipment figures show
In October 2023, reporting on Jeronimo’s IDC estimate put cumulative Pixel shipments at 37.9 million since the phone line launched in 2016. The same report cited approximately 27.6 million cumulative units by October 2022. The figures are often rounded into a “nearly 40 million” headline.

The underlying figures and attribution are in 9to5Google’s report on the IDC estimate. “Nearly 40 million” is a reasonable rounding of 37.9 million, but calling it exactly 40 million obscures the estimate behind the headline.

Does “10 million in one year” mean calendar year 2023?
Not on the evidence available. Subtracting the earlier cumulative estimate of 27.6 million from the later 37.9 million estimate yields about 10.3 million units. That is an arithmetic inference between measurement points, not a clearly disclosed January-to-December 2023 total. It should not be presented as an audited or independently reported calendar-year sales figure.

Shipments are not the same as consumer sales
Market reports and headlines sometimes use “sales” loosely, but several distinct measures can be involved:
- Shipments or sell-in: Devices a manufacturer sends into the distribution channel, such as to a carrier or retailer.
- Sell-through: Devices purchased by end customers from that channel.
- Activations: Devices activated on a mobile network.
- Installed base: Devices that remain in active use.
The 37.9 million figure is best described as an IDC shipment estimate, not a count of phones proven to have been purchased or activated by consumers. IDC’s smartphone market-share tracker describes figures for new device shipments and excludes refurbished devices.

Why Pixel growth matters—and what it does not prove
Reaching an estimated 37.9 million cumulative shipments was a meaningful milestone for a phone line launched in 2016. Pixel’s growth has been associated with stronger recent product cycles, expansion into more countries and carrier channels, promotions and trade-in offers, and the lower-priced A-series. Google has also developed Pixel as part of a broader ecosystem that includes Android, Google Photos, Tensor, Gemini, Pixel Watch, and Pixel Buds.

The available estimate does not show that every Pixel model contributed equally or establish the size of any one factor.
Pixel remains much smaller than the global leaders
A fast growth rate from a small starting point can coexist with a modest share of the global market. Pixel’s cumulative shipments over roughly seven years do not mean Google became a volume rival to Apple or Samsung. Worldwide market tables commonly group Pixel under “Others” rather than list it among the leading vendors. Cumulative units also are not the same measure as annual market share, regional share, or the number of phones still in use.
Why Google’s financial reports do not confirm Pixel unit sales
Alphabet does not publish a Pixel-specific cumulative shipment total in its standard financial reporting. Its fiscal 2025 filings report $48.03 billion in revenue for “Google subscriptions, platforms, and devices,” a category that includes more than Pixel hardware. That figure cannot be treated as Pixel revenue or used to calculate Pixel unit sales. The Alphabet 2025 Form 10-K describes the broader category, not a Pixel-only result.

For the unit milestone, the evidence is therefore different in kind: an IDC analyst estimate, relayed by a technology publication, rather than a Google-reported number in a corporate filing. IDC describes its tracker as covering vendor shipments across global markets; its analyst context is available in an IDC market outlook.
What later estimates say about Pixel momentum
The 37.9-million milestone is historical, tied to an estimate through 2023, not a current cumulative total. Android Central later reported an estimated 25% increase in Pixel shipments in 2025. That is a third-party estimate, not Google guidance, and it should not be added to the earlier cumulative figure without matching definitions and methodology. Alphabet’s 2025 filings still do not disclose Pixel unit sales or Pixel-specific revenue.

Market conditions also change. In a July 2026 release, IDC reported that worldwide smartphone shipments fell 6.7% year over year in the second quarter of 2026. That market-wide figure is not Pixel-specific and does not establish how Pixel performed during the period.
Verdict: a real milestone, not an official “40 million sales” announcement
The claim has a real basis: IDC analyst Francisco Jeronimo estimated 37.9 million cumulative Pixel shipments through 2023. Comparing that with the earlier 27.6-million estimate implies an increase of about 10.3 million units between measurement points. Neither figure is an official Google disclosure, and the comparison does not establish exactly 10 million consumer sales in a calendar year.
