Google Opinion Rewards does offer receipt scanning, but it is an invitation-only feature for selected Android users—not a way for everyone to earn a fixed reward for every shopping receipt. You need an activated account, an invitation, and Google Location History enabled. Rewards vary, and Android users generally receive Google Play credit rather than cash.
What Google’s receipt feature does
Google documents the feature as Receipt scanning within Google Opinion Rewards. It is not a separate app, and it is distinct from the app’s ordinary surveys. Google says users have uploaded receipts in connection with surveys since 2016; the newer receipt interface makes it easier to submit them when a task appears.
Receipt tasks are tied to location-based prompts. Google may ask for a receipt after identifying a store visit, but its location technology can sometimes identify the wrong store. You should respond to the task you actually received rather than upload an unrelated receipt.

Who can use it?
Three conditions matter:
- Android: Google’s receipt-specific instructions say the feature is for Android. The fact that Opinion Rewards is also available on iOS does not mean iPhone users can scan receipts.
- Invitation: Google selects a limited number of users for the Receipts program. Installing the app does not guarantee access, and Google does not document a public signup switch that guarantees enrollment.
- Account and location settings: You need an activated Opinion Rewards account and Google Location History enabled. The app’s general country availability is not a guarantee of receipt-program access; check Google’s country availability list.
In the European Union, location-based receipt tasks also require linking Maps under Google’s linked-services settings. Google says declining relevant service links can reduce survey volume or prevent those tasks from appearing. See its linked-services information.

How to upload a receipt
- Open Google Opinion Rewards on your Android phone.
- Under My Tasks, look for Receipt tasks. Tap it, or choose View all.
- On the Receipts screen, tap Upload receipt.
- Take a photo in the app or select a receipt image from your phone’s gallery.
- Check that the image is clear and complete, then submit it.
Google says a reward is issued when you complete a receipt task, but the amount varies. Tasks expire after seven days. If a prompt does not match what happened, use the available response—such as I didn’t visit this store, I visited but didn’t make a purchase, or I purchased but don’t have a receipt—or choose Skip this task. Do not submit a different receipt just to complete the prompt.
Which receipts qualify?
Google’s current receipt instructions accept physical paper receipts. A qualifying receipt should clearly show the vendor name, vendor address, itemized line items, and total amount. The instructions allow a photo taken in the app or an image chosen from the gallery.
Google’s receipt-specific page does not promise acceptance of emailed receipts, online-order screenshots, digital-wallet histories, bank statements, or receipts missing the required details. Nor does Google publish a definitive list of participating retailers: it says to shop normally and wait for the app to notify you when a receipt can be added.

For a clearer image, include the entire receipt, use good lighting, and avoid glare or folds covering text. Keep the original if you need it for a return, warranty, tax record, or reimbursement; uploading a photo does not replace it.
How much does it pay?
Google does not publish a guaranteed amount per receipt or a fixed reward rate. Its help page says rewards depend on the type and number of receipt tasks and may change at any time. Your total therefore depends on whether tasks appear, which receipts are requested, and whether you complete eligible tasks. Treat any exact per-receipt figure found in user reports as anecdotal, not an official rate.
For Android users, Opinion Rewards generally pays in Google Play credit, according to Google’s reward information. That is useful if you spend in Google Play, but it is not the same as cash you can freely withdraw or use anywhere. Google’s general program pays iOS users through PayPal, but that does not make receipt scanning available on iPhone or establish cash withdrawals for receipt tasks.

What the privacy trade-off involves
A receipt can disclose more than a purchase total: it may show a store and location, date and time, specific products, prices, and shopping frequency. Google connects receipt tasks to location-based prompts. That makes the feature a trade: occasional, variable Play credit in exchange for sharing itemized purchase information and enabling the required location setting.

In the app, go to Settings → Receipt Sharing → Manage Receipts in Google Receipt Manager. To stop future participation, go to Settings → Receipt Sharing → Opt out of receipt sharing. Opting out is not the same as deleting receipts you already uploaded; review Receipt Manager separately. Google says receipt data can still be managed there even after opting out, uninstalling the app, or deleting the Opinion Rewards account.
Before enrolling, review the Google Account and Opinion Rewards privacy settings that apply to you. Do not upload a receipt if you are uncomfortable sharing what it reveals, and check the photo so it contains only the receipt—not unrelated documents or personal images. Google says an uploaded image that is not a receipt is automatically deleted and will not appear in Receipt Manager.

If Receipt tasks are missing or something goes wrong
- No Receipt tasks card: You may not have been invited, may not have accepted the invitation, may be using iOS, or may have Location History disabled. General app availability in your country does not ensure receipt access. Reinstalling the app is not a guaranteed way to unlock an invitation-only feature.
- No task for a store: Tasks are selective and location-dependent; Google does not promise a task for every visit or retailer.
- Wrong store shown: Use I didn’t visit this store instead of uploading an unrelated receipt.
- No purchase or no receipt: Choose the response that accurately describes the visit, or skip the task.
- Receipt may be unreadable: Retake the photo with the vendor, address, line items, and total visible. A blurry, cropped, or incomplete image may not meet Google’s stated requirements.
- Task has expired: Tasks last seven days, so check the app regularly rather than assuming a saved receipt will remain eligible.
- Feature changed after privacy-setting changes: In the EU, review linked-service settings; Google says Maps linking is required for location-based receipt tasks.
Some users report delayed processing or duplicate detections, but those reports are anecdotal, not a published guarantee about how Google handles every submission.
How it compares with other receipt-reward options

These programs differ in eligibility, reward type, receipt rules, and data permissions. Check each service’s current terms before joining. Do not assume you may submit the same receipt to multiple programs; review their duplicate-submission rules first.
Is Google’s receipt program worth trying?
It may suit you if you already use Android, value Google Play credit, receive receipt tasks, and are comfortable enabling location features and sharing itemized shopping details. It is a poor fit if you use an iPhone, want cash, mainly have digital receipts, expect every receipt to earn a predictable amount, or do not want to share purchase data. With no guaranteed task frequency or payout, this is best treated as occasional pocket money—not dependable income.
