Google opened its first UK data centre at Waltham Cross in Hertfordshire on 16 September 2025, just before US President Donald Trump’s state visit. The facility is part of Google’s wider £5 billion, two-year UK investment—not a £5 billion building project—and Google says it will support Google Cloud, Search, Maps and AI services.
What opened at Waltham Cross?
The Waltham Cross data centre is on a 33-acre site in Hertfordshire, on the edge of London. Google announced a $1 billion investment in the facility in January 2024 and described it as its first UK data centre. The company says the site will add computing capacity for services including Google Cloud, Search and Maps, as well as AI workloads. It is not an AI-only facility. Google’s original project announcement set out the site and facility investment; its opening announcement described its broader role.
A data centre is the physical infrastructure that houses computing equipment. It is not the same thing as a public cloud region, and its opening does not establish that every Google Cloud service is available from this location. Businesses considering Google Cloud should check the specific region, service availability, backup locations and data-transfer terms for their workloads.

What the £5 billion and 8,250 jobs figures mean
Google’s £5 billion commitment covers two years of UK activity, including data-centre infrastructure, capital expenditure, research and development, and related engineering such as Google DeepMind work. It is not the cost of the Waltham Cross centre alone.

Google projects that this broader investment will support 8,250 jobs annually at UK businesses. That is a projected figure associated with the wider investment—not the number of people employed at Waltham Cross or a count of permanent Google jobs at the site. The UK government also listed Alphabet’s commitment and projected jobs in its industrial strategy update. These figures describe expected economic activity, not an independently verified tally of jobs already created.
Why the timing mattered
The opening took place immediately before Trump’s September 2025 state visit, when the UK government publicized a much larger package of investment and technology agreements involving US companies. Google’s launch became one part of that economic and technology story. The timing does not mean Trump opened the facility, that the centre was built for the visit, or that it was a standalone deal with his administration.

The government presented the visit as an opportunity to deepen UK-US cooperation in areas including technology and AI. Its investment announcement placed Google alongside a broader set of commitments. The context matters: Waltham Cross is a physical infrastructure milestone, while the political announcements describe a wider investment push.

Google says Waltham Cross uses air-based cooling and is designed to support off-site heat recovery. The latter could allow excess heat to be supplied to nearby homes, schools or businesses, but “designed to support” does not establish that a working heat network is already delivering heat locally. Google’s January 2024 announcement described the cooling and heat-recovery provisions.

Google has also pointed to energy arrangements involving ENGIE, including offshore wind from Scotland’s Moray West wind farm, and an agreement with Shell to manage its UK carbon-free-energy portfolio and deploy battery storage. The company projected that its UK operations could run at or near 95% carbon-free energy in 2026. That is a company projection for UK operations, not a measured result for Waltham Cross alone.
Carbon-free-energy accounting should not be read as proof that the site is supplied by a dedicated wind farm every hour. Power-purchase agreements and portfolio-level energy claims are not the same as direct, continuous physical supply from a particular generator. Nor does air-based cooling mean zero water use: Google describes water use as limited, not eliminated. The available announcements describe plans and claims; they do not provide independently measured operating data for the centre.

Local effects and the questions that remain
Google and Broxbourne Council have highlighted economic development, community support, charity and social-enterprise funding, construction work and potential heat-reuse benefits. Contemporary reporting also described residents’ complaints about construction noise and disruption, visual impact, property values and whether the community would receive meaningful benefits. Those are reported concerns, not evidence that property values fell; the available reporting does not quantify that effect. For residents and local decision-makers, the practical measures to watch are post-construction noise, traffic and electrical infrastructure demands, the scale of lasting local employment, water use in normal and peak operation, and whether heat recovery reaches actual nearby users. The announcements do not settle those operating questions.
What the opening means for UK cloud customers
More UK-based computing capacity may help some workloads with latency and resilience, but the building’s location alone does not guarantee that a customer’s data is stored or processed only in the UK. Customers should check the exact Google Cloud region and service, backup arrangements, data-transfer terms and contract language. They should also compare total cost—including storage, network egress, support and committed-use terms—with alternatives such as AWS and Microsoft Azure. A physical facility opening is not, by itself, a reason to switch providers.
Part of a wider AI infrastructure race
Waltham Cross arrived amid a broader wave of AI and data-centre commitments announced around the state visit, involving companies including Microsoft, CoreWeave, Nscale, OpenAI, NVIDIA and Salesforce. The competition is about more than cloud software: companies and governments are seeking access to computing capacity, electricity, infrastructure and technical talent. The UK government framed the announcements as evidence of a growing AI economy and closer technology ties with the United States. Whether the commitments translate into lasting local benefits depends on delivery, not headline totals.
