Google completed its acquisition of cloud-security company Wiz on March 11, 2026. The deal was announced at a headline value of $32 billion in cash, but Alphabet later reported an accounting purchase price of approximately $29.5 billion after purchase-price adjustments. Wiz is now part of Google Cloud and is retaining its brand.
That means the latest development is not simply that the transaction was approved: it closed. Regulatory clearance, including unconditional European Commission approval on February 10, 2026, was an important step on the way to completion.

The $32 billion figure remains the headline value Google announced in 2025. Alphabet’s first-quarter 2026 filing records a preliminary purchase price of $29.467 billion, which is commonly rounded to $29.5 billion. Those figures describe different stages and purposes of the transaction rather than necessarily indicating that Google renegotiated the deal.
Alphabet’s filing also reported approximately $22.689 billion in goodwill and about $8.3 billion in acquired intangible assets. Those are accounting figures, not a statement that the company immediately generated that amount of economic value.

Google’s original announcement described the transaction as an all-cash acquisition. Alphabet’s quarterly filing contains the later accounting disclosure.
What Wiz does
Wiz is a cloud and AI security company founded in 2020. Its platform is designed to help organizations discover cloud assets, identify vulnerabilities and identity risks, prioritize exposure, and protect workloads across complex environments.
In practical terms, the platform can cover areas such as:
- Cloud security posture management.
- Cloud infrastructure entitlement and identity-risk analysis.
- Vulnerability and exposure prioritization.
- Cloud detection and response.
- Application and workload security.
- AI-application and AI-infrastructure security.
- Asset discovery across multicloud and hybrid environments.
Wiz is not a consumer Google product. This is primarily an enterprise-security acquisition aimed at companies operating workloads across Google Cloud, Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Oracle Cloud, SaaS platforms, on-premises infrastructure, and AI-development environments.
The European Commission’s merger materials describe Wiz as helping organizations secure workloads across multicloud and on-premises environments. Product names and packaging may change as Wiz becomes part of Google Cloud, so the list above should be viewed as a description of the platform’s capabilities rather than a permanent official product taxonomy.
Why Google wanted Wiz
Google Cloud has been expanding beyond infrastructure and platform services into the security layer of enterprise computing. Wiz gives Google a major cloud-native security platform that can be relevant even when a customer does not run everything on Google Cloud.

Google’s stated goals include:
- Strengthening its cloud-security portfolio.
- Protecting multicloud and hybrid environments.
- Helping customers secure AI applications and infrastructure.
- Combining Wiz’s cloud-security platform with Google’s security, threat-intelligence, and AI capabilities.
- Expanding Google Cloud’s enterprise-security distribution through its sales force, partners, marketplace, and services ecosystem.
Google has described the acquisition as its largest acquisition. More broadly, the transaction was one of the cybersecurity industry’s largest deals and signals how important cloud and AI security have become to enterprise technology spending.

Regulatory approval and closing timeline
- March 18, 2025: Google announced the proposed $32 billion acquisition.
- January 6, 2026: The European Commission received notification of the merger.
- February 10, 2026: The European Commission approved the transaction without conditions under the EU Merger Regulation.
- February 19, 2026: The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s public register listed the acquisition as approved, with a Phase 1 determination date.
- March 11, 2026: Google announced that it had completed the acquisition.
The European Commission said the transaction did not raise competition concerns under the EU Merger Regulation. Its assessment considered the presence of strong competitors, including Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure, as well as the continued importance of multicloud deployment. The European Commission decision record provides the relevant regulatory reasoning.
The Australian approval is listed in the ACCC’s public register. The available official sources establish the completed transaction, EU clearance, and Australian approval, but they do not provide a complete jurisdiction-by-jurisdiction approval timeline. It would therefore be too broad to claim that one specific approval represented every regulatory step worldwide.
Why regulators allowed the acquisition
The central competition question was not simply whether Google owns a cloud provider. Regulators also had to consider whether Google’s ownership of Wiz could reduce competition in cloud-security software, give Google an advantage through the combination of cloud infrastructure and security capabilities, or make it harder for independent security vendors to compete.

The European Commission’s reasoning emphasized that AWS and Microsoft Azure remain powerful competitors and that Wiz serves multicloud customers. That positioning makes it less obvious that the product would be limited to Google Cloud customers after the acquisition.

Regulatory clearance does not mean regulators concluded that the deal will be commercially successful. It also does not establish that Google may bundle Wiz with its cloud services in any particular way, or that every other regulator used identical reasoning.
What changes for Wiz customers?
Google says Wiz will retain its brand and continue supporting AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, and Oracle Cloud. That commitment is especially important because Wiz’s value depends partly on being useful to companies that do not want a security platform tied exclusively to one cloud provider.
Customers and prospective buyers should watch five areas:

- Product integration: How Wiz connects with Google Cloud’s security, threat-intelligence, and AI services.
- Pricing and packaging: Whether licensing, account management, marketplace availability, or support arrangements change.
- Data governance: How customer data, telemetry, access controls, and data-residency commitments are handled after the ownership change.
- Vendor neutrality: Whether product development continues to serve customers whose primary cloud is AWS or Azure.
Google’s multicloud commitment is a current company statement, not a guarantee that every future product decision or price will remain unchanged. Organizations evaluating Wiz should request current contractual, privacy, security, and data-processing terms rather than relying only on the acquisition announcement.
Competitive implications
The deal places Google Cloud and Wiz in a more significant competitive position against several types of providers:
- AWS Security Hub: A natural fit for organizations primarily operating on AWS and seeking AWS-native findings aggregation and security management.
- Microsoft Defender for Cloud: A strong consideration for organizations using Azure, Microsoft 365, Windows, and Microsoft’s broader security stack.
- Palo Alto Networks Cortex Cloud: An option for enterprises seeking a broad cloud-security platform from an independent cybersecurity vendor.
- Other CNAPP and cloud-security vendors: Independent providers may appeal to buyers that want to separate their security platform from their infrastructure provider.
Wiz does not automatically replace these products. The right comparison depends on the customer’s cloud mix, Kubernetes and SaaS coverage, identity-risk requirements, runtime detection needs, AI-security priorities, compliance obligations, data-residency requirements, and existing vendor commitments.

For Google Cloud customers, ownership could make integration and procurement more attractive. For organizations that prioritize vendor independence, Google’s ownership may be a reason to compare Wiz more carefully with independent alternatives.

Potential conflict of interest
Wiz was valuable partly because it could work across competing clouds. Some AWS- and Azure-heavy customers may question whether Google will eventually favor its own cloud in product development, pricing, telemetry, or sales strategy.
Google has said Wiz will continue to support rival clouds, but customers will need to judge that commitment through product road maps, service levels, contract terms, and actual feature parity.
Integration complexity
Google must combine a fast-growing security company with a much larger cloud platform without making the product harder to buy or use. Possible problems include overlapping tools, confusing packaging, slower product decisions, changes to account management, and uncertainty over support.
Bundling and market power
Google could gain an opportunity to package cloud infrastructure and security services together. That may simplify procurement for some customers, but it could concern buyers and competitors if security tools become difficult to purchase without broader Google Cloud commitments.

Price and valuation risk
A $32 billion headline price creates a high bar for the deal to justify itself. Google must generate enough growth, customer retention, cross-selling, and strategic value to make the investment worthwhile. No available source establishes that the acquisition has already improved Google Cloud revenue or margins.

Customer data and telemetry
Google’s ownership naturally raises questions about access controls, telemetry, data residency, and the separation of customer information from other Google businesses. The acquisition sources confirm multicloud availability, but they do not establish every post-closing data-governance term. Buyers should review current contractual and privacy documentation before making assumptions.
What the deal means for investors and business readers
For investors, the transaction is a major capital-allocation decision by Alphabet and a signal that Google sees cloud security and AI security as strategic infrastructure markets. For enterprise buyers, it changes the vendor landscape without eliminating the need for technical and commercial due diligence.
The most important distinction is between transaction completion and business performance. Google has completed the acquisition. That does not yet prove that Wiz will retain its growth rate, that Google will integrate it smoothly, or that customers will accept Google-owned multicloud security at the same rate as before.

Bottom line
Google’s Wiz transaction is complete, not merely approved. Google announced the deal at $32 billion in cash in March 2025, completed it on March 11, 2026, and later recorded an accounting purchase price of approximately $29.5 billion.
The acquisition gives Google Cloud a major platform for multicloud, hybrid, cloud-workload, and AI security. Its success will depend on whether Google can expand Wiz’s distribution and capabilities without weakening the cloud neutrality that made Wiz attractive in the first place.
