The global tablet market returned to year-over-year growth in Q1 2024, but only just. IDC estimated 30.8 million shipments, up 0.5%, while Canalys estimated 33.7 million, up 1%. Both point to stabilization after a long decline—not yet a broad or proven consumer rebound.
The gains were uneven: Apple and Samsung remained the two largest vendors but shipped fewer tablets than a year earlier, while Huawei, Lenovo, and Xiaomi grew. Promotions and demand in China and parts of Asia helped, against longer replacement cycles, pandemic-era market saturation, and weak demand in some major markets.
What the Q1 figures say—and why they differ
IDC’s preliminary estimate put worldwide tablet shipments at 30.8 million units, up 0.5% year over year. IDC described the increase as the end of a 10-quarter run of contraction. IDC’s Q1 results were published on May 3, 2024.

Canalys estimated 33.7 million shipments, up 1%. These totals should be reported separately, not averaged: research firms can differ in their definitions, device classifications, channel coverage, and reporting cutoffs. The two estimates agree on the key point—the market edged back into growth—but not on the precise market size. Canalys’ Q1 summary gives its estimate.

These are shipment estimates, not a count of tablets bought by consumers. Shipments measure devices moving into distribution channels; they may lead or lag retail sell-through, and a positive shipment quarter does not establish that end-user demand rose by the same amount.
A return to growth, not yet a durable turnaround
After ten quarters of contraction, even a small increase mattered: it suggested the post-pandemic correction may have begun to stabilize. But growth of 0.5% or 1% is too modest, on its own, to prove a durable recovery. Promotions, channel inventory changes, regional timing, and comparison with a weak prior-year quarter can all affect a small year-over-year gain.
The vendor mix also complicates the headline. In IDC’s data, the two market leaders declined while several smaller competitors gained. That is a shift in competitive momentum, not evidence that the leaders lost their positions or that the whole market was growing strongly.

IDC’s Q1 vendor scorecard
The table below uses IDC’s preliminary estimates throughout; it does not mix vendor figures from different research firms. Shipments and shares are rounded, so percentages may not add precisely.

Apple: still first, but with weaker shipments
Apple held the largest share, at 32%, and shipped more tablets than any individual rival. Its 8.5% year-over-year decline therefore signals weaker Q1 momentum, not a collapse in its market position. The quarter came before Apple’s May 2024 iPad launches, following a comparatively quiet product period. Premium prices and longer replacement cycles may also make upgrades easier for buyers to defer, particularly when budgets are under pressure. At the same time, Android rivals can compete on lower prices and promotions.

Samsung: second place in IDC’s ranking
Samsung remained number two globally in IDC’s Q1 table, with 21.8% share, despite a 5.8% shipment decline. Its range spans entry-level Galaxy Tab A devices and premium Galaxy Tab S models, including productivity-focused options. That breadth is an advantage, but it also competes with aggressive pricing from Chinese vendors and other low-cost brands. Product timing and discounts can influence quarterly shipments; one quarter does not show whether Samsung’s longer-term position is changing.
Huawei, Lenovo, and Xiaomi: faster growth from smaller bases
Huawei grew 43.6% and Lenovo 13.2% in IDC’s estimate. Xiaomi had the fastest percentage increase, at 92.6%, but its 1.8 million shipments were far below Apple’s 9.9 million. A near-doubling from a smaller base is not the same as leading the market in unit volume.
Huawei’s growth was closely associated with China and broader Asia-Pacific demand. Xiaomi and other Chinese brands also benefited from domestic strength and have pursued overseas markets, including emerging markets and parts of Europe and the Middle East. Those results do not show that the brands grew equally in every country: IDC still ranked Samsung second and Huawei third worldwide.

What supported demand—and what held it back
Promotions around Lunar New Year helped support demand in China. Better consumer sentiment and economic stabilization in parts of Asia, affordable-computing needs, education purchases, and commercial or government deployments also contributed to the market’s support. Replacement demand may have begun returning as devices bought during the pandemic aged.
Those forces met significant headwinds:
- Longer replacement cycles: A tablet that still handles browsing, video, and light work may not need replacing for years.
- Pandemic-era pull-forward: The buying surge of 2020–2021 expanded the installed base, leaving fewer households and schools needing another device soon afterward.
- Product overlap: Phones, laptops, Chromebooks, and 2-in-1 PCs can handle tasks that might otherwise justify a tablet purchase.
- Limited upgrade incentives: Incremental improvements may not persuade owners to replace a functional device.
- Affordability pressure: Consumers remained price-sensitive, and a tablet with a keyboard, stylus, or cellular service can cost much more than its base price suggests.
- Regional unevenness: Strength in China or other Asian markets does not establish a recovery in the United States or every other region.
- Channel risk: Shipments can rise without an equivalent increase in devices sold through to consumers.
IDC’s forecast themes included possible demand from frontline workers, the gig economy, and younger workers, alongside risks such as China’s deflationary environment and Windows 11 migration. These are longer-term opportunities and constraints—not proof of what caused Q1 shipments to grow. IDC’s forecast summary discusses those themes.

Consumer promotions are visible, but institutional demand can be important to the market’s durability. Schools, governments, and businesses may deploy tablets in batches for classrooms, frontline work, field service, or shared workflows. These purchases can support volume even when households delay upgrades, though deployment timing can also make quarterly shipment figures lumpy.

For procurement teams, the vendor’s market share is not a buying recommendation. Compare the device’s software-support period, app compatibility, enterprise-management tools, warranty and repair coverage in the intended country, and total cost including accessories and connectivity. Check whether cellular service is necessary, whether keyboard and stylus accessories are included, and whether employees can use the tablet for their actual workflows. Huawei buyers should verify that its software and app ecosystem meets local needs, including whether Google-dependent apps are required.
What Q2 revealed in hindsight
IDC subsequently reported 34.4 million tablet shipments in Q2 2024, up 22.1% year over year. It linked the stronger quarter to product refreshes, including Apple’s, and demand for detachable tablets. That follow-up suggests Q1 was an early stabilization point before a more visible rebound—not that Q1 itself was a surge or that it caused the Q2 growth. IDC’s Q2 results provide the later comparison.
For market watchers, the next questions are whether growth persists across multiple quarters, whether it reaches consumer sell-through as well as shipments, and how it is divided between premium and entry-level devices and between consumer and institutional buyers. For investors, shipment share is not revenue share or profitability: promotional unit growth can come with margin pressure, and vendors’ regional strengths differ. For buyers, the quarter’s rankings offer market context, not a reason to choose a particular tablet without checking current local availability, support, and total cost.
