The Galaxy Tab S9 FE really was available for an effective $79, but that was not its ordinary price. The November 6, 2024 offer required a qualifying Samsung discount-program account and a tablet trade-in worth the promotion’s maximum $300 credit. Treat $79 as a historical, conditional price—not a confirmed offer today—unless Samsung’s current checkout shows the same terms.
How the $79 price worked
The deal covered the Wi-Fi Galaxy Tab S9 FE with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. The calculation reported by Droid Life on November 6, 2024 was:

That is an effective price after stacking a discount and the maximum trade-in credit. It is not evidence that anyone could buy the tablet for $79 in cash, without eligibility checks or surrendering a device. Your checkout total could also include tax, shipping, or other charges. Trade-in credits may depend on the exact device and its condition, and final credit can be affected by inspection.
The price reference is consistent with Samsung’s 2025 MSRP sheet, which listed the Wi-Fi 256GB model at $519.99. That is a historical list price, not a statement of its current street price. Who could get the discount?
The original offer was for people eligible for Samsung discount programs, including education customers, military members and first responders, among potentially other verified groups. Eligibility categories and discount terms can change. Do not assume that having a Samsung account—or belonging to one of these groups—automatically produces the same discount.
Start from Samsung’s U.S. tablet store, then check the current program and trade-in terms that apply to you. Samsung has dedicated pages for its education program, military discount and first-responder program. Availability and verification requirements should be confirmed on those pages and at checkout.

The trade-in is the other half of the deal
The original report cited up to $300 for certain older Galaxy Tab models, including models in the Tab S7 and Tab S8 lines. Other tablets could qualify for a different amount. “Up to $300” is a ceiling, not a promise that any old tablet earns that credit.

Before accepting an offer, check the exact model and storage tier Samsung recognizes, the required power and condition standards, and whether the tablet must be unlocked from accounts. Confirm whether the quoted credit is applied immediately or remains subject to inspection—and what happens if the returned device does not meet the stated condition. Samsung’s trade-in page is the place to check its current process and valuation.

Compare the credit with what you could reasonably get by selling the tablet yourself. A $300 credit may be convenient, but it is not automatically a $300 saving if the device has a higher resale value. Account for marketplace fees, shipping, time and the risk of a private sale, too. Keeping the old tablet is also a real option if it is useful as a backup.
How to verify a similar offer before sending your tablet
- Open Samsung’s current U.S. tablet promotion and select the exact Tab S9 FE configuration.
- Sign in and complete any required eligibility verification for your discount program.
- Enter the trade-in tablet’s exact model and condition; do not estimate from a broad product family.
- Check that the discount and trade-in credit both appear in the order summary.
- Review tax, shipping, payment or financing terms, return rules and the trade-in deadline. Save the order summary.
- Only then prepare the old tablet as directed. Photograph its condition, remove accounts, factory-reset it, and keep the shipment receipt and tracking details.
Do not send a device based on a headline or an estimated credit alone. The final checkout and trade-in terms determine your actual cost and risk.

What you get for the money
The Tab S9 FE is a value-oriented member of Samsung’s Tab S9 family, not a discounted flagship Galaxy Tab S9. Samsung’s specification sheet lists a 10.9-inch LCD with 2304 × 1440 resolution, an Exynos 1380 processor and an 8,000mAh battery. The Wi-Fi model also has an 8MP rear camera, a 12MP ultra-wide front camera, USB-C 2.0, microSD expansion up to 1TB, IP68-rated water and dust resistance, AKG-tuned stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos, and standalone Samsung DeX support. Samsung includes an S Pen.
Those features make the tablet well suited to handwriting notes, reading PDFs, browsing, video calls, streaming and light productivity. The S Pen and microSD expansion add flexibility without requiring a higher-end model, while DeX offers a desktop-style interface for basic multitasking. IP68 is useful protection against dust and certain water exposure, but it does not make the tablet waterproof or immune to damage.

What the S9 FE is not
The LCD and midrange Exynos 1380 are meaningful compromises beside a flagship Tab S model. Expect everyday apps and schoolwork to be a better fit than demanding games, heavy video editing or other sustained, high-performance workloads. DeX changes the interface; it does not make the processor a laptop-class chip.
USB-C 2.0 is another limitation for people who move large files or depend on advanced wired peripherals. Do not assume the port provides the speed or external-display capabilities of a higher-end tablet. The S9 FE also lacks the AMOLED display found on flagship models. A keyboard cover is an additional accessory, and charger inclusion can vary; Samsung’s materials reference 45W fast charging, but check the box contents and charger requirements for the specific offer. The included S Pen is a substantial value, but it is not a keyboard replacement.
Check the exact product listing as well as its storage tier: the original $79 calculation was for the 8GB/256GB Wi-Fi model, not the 6GB/128GB base configuration, the 5G version or the larger Tab S9 FE+.
Who should consider it?
- Students and note-takers: A strong fit if the S Pen, large screen and PDF annotation matter and the offer’s eligibility and trade-in terms work for you.
- Samsung phone owners: A natural option if you already use Samsung’s ecosystem and want a companion tablet for everyday tasks.
- Streaming and reading: The large display and stereo speakers suit casual media use, though buyers who prioritize OLED contrast should look elsewhere.
- Families: It can handle browsing, video and children’s apps; set up appropriate parental controls and consider a case. Do not assume a case is included unless the specific listing says so.
- Power users and serious gamers: Be cautious. The LCD, midrange chipset and USB-C 2.0 make this a poor substitute for a flagship tablet when performance, display quality or high-speed connections are priorities.
Check the generation and the alternatives
A newer model may be worth paying more for if the price gap is small and you value newer hardware or more remaining product life, but compare actual current prices rather than MSRP alone. Samsung’s 2025 MSRP material listed the Tab S10 FE at $499.99 for 8GB/128GB and $569.99 for 12GB/256GB; those figures are reference prices, not current offers. A used flagship Tab S8 or S9 may better suit buyers who want a faster processor or AMOLED screen, while a less expensive Galaxy Tab A-series tablet may be enough for basic streaming if the S Pen, IP68 rating and DeX are unimportant. An iPad may be a better fit for someone already invested in Apple’s ecosystem.
Deal status: The $79 offer described here was reported on November 6, 2024. The available evidence does not confirm that it is active on September 24, 2026. Unless Samsung’s live checkout displays the same eligible discount and qualifying trade-in combination, treat $79 as a historical deal—not a current price.
