As of August 18, 2026, Samsung’s basic Galaxy AI features are free. Samsung has not announced a monthly or annual price for a Galaxy AI subscription, and there is no verified paywall for the basic Samsung tools currently included on supported devices.
That does not mean every AI feature is free forever. Samsung distinguishes between basic Galaxy AI, enhanced Samsung services, and third-party features such as Google Gemini. Enhanced or partner-powered services may have separate terms, usage limits, trials, or fees.
The short answer on Galaxy AI pricing
Samsung is not currently charging a subscription for its basic Galaxy AI features. Its current U.S. support wording says that “Galaxy AI basic features provided by Samsung are free.” Samsung separately says enhanced features and third-party AI services may be governed by different terms and may incur fees.

Samsung’s current Galaxy AI support guidance is the most useful reference for the distinction.
Why people expected a Galaxy AI paywall
When Samsung launched Galaxy AI with the Galaxy S24 family in January 2024, its wording said Samsung-provided Galaxy AI features would be available free on supported devices through the end of 2025. Samsung repeated similar language in later product materials.
That deadline created a reasonable question: would Samsung begin charging in 2026?

It did not specify a price, a launch date, which tools would become paid, or whether a subscription would cover the entire Galaxy AI suite.
Samsung’s later public statements moved toward a different formulation. In October 2025, Samsung Australia said current Galaxy AI features were free and that it had no plans at that time to charge for them, while noting that premium services would be decided with partners. Samsung’s 2026 U.S. materials now describe basic features as free while preserving the possibility of paid enhanced services.

What “Galaxy AI” actually includes
Galaxy AI is a broad marketing label, not one indivisible product with one price. Depending on the phone, region, language, carrier, app, and software version, it can cover tools such as:

- Interpreter and Live Translate;
- Browsing Assist and notification summaries;
- Photo Assist and Generative Edit;
- AI Select and Audio Eraser;
- Creative Studio and proactive features such as Now Brief; and
- Google-powered functions integrated into Galaxy devices.
The same Galaxy AI branding can therefore describe a Samsung-built tool, a Samsung feature that uses cloud processing, or a Google-powered experience surfaced through a Galaxy phone. Those categories do not necessarily share the same account requirements, privacy terms, availability, or price.
What is included for free?
Samsung’s current promise applies to its basic Galaxy AI features. Representative examples include writing, note, translation, transcription, call, and gallery tools, although the exact selection depends on the device and software version.
“Free” does not necessarily mean:
- every Galaxy AI feature is included;
- every feature works offline;
- usage is unlimited;
- the feature works in every language or country;
- the feature is available on every model in a product family; or
- access to a partner’s broader AI service is included permanently.
Some functions require a Samsung account, an internet connection, a compatible app, or a supported language. Samsung’s feature and account requirements should be checked for the exact phone being used.
What could cost money?
Enhanced Samsung AI
Samsung says enhanced AI features or future AI services may be offered under different terms and may be subject to fees. That language leaves room for a paid tier, but it does not establish that Samsung has decided to launch one.

Google Gemini and other partner services
Some prominent Galaxy experiences use Google Gemini or other partner technology. A feature may appear inside Samsung’s software while still being controlled by a partner’s account and subscription rules.
Samsung has noted that Gemini Live capabilities can vary according to subscription status. A Google AI trial bundled with a phone purchase is also different from Samsung’s basic Galaxy AI: the trial can expire, and it may cover Google’s broader AI service rather than Samsung’s built-in tools.

Cloud processing and data use
A feature can be free of a Samsung subscription charge while still requiring internet access. That may use mobile data or Wi-Fi and may involve cloud-assisted processing. Users handling sensitive calls, documents, photographs, or notes should review the applicable Samsung and partner privacy settings before enabling AI features.
Does buying a Galaxy phone guarantee permanent AI access?
No. Buying a Galaxy phone gives you access to the features Samsung makes available for that model under its current software and service terms. It does not create a blanket, permanent license to every present or future AI capability.
The practical distinction is:
- The hardware may include Samsung’s current basic AI tools.
- A Google-powered feature may require a Google account or paid Google plan.
- A promotional trial may expire even if the phone remains yours.
- A future enhanced Samsung service could have separate pricing.
- Updates, regional policies, language support, and model limitations can change the available feature set.
For that reason, buyers should not purchase a phone solely on the assumption that it includes unlimited premium AI indefinitely.

Which Galaxy devices support Galaxy AI?
Samsung’s U.S. compatibility information lists selected models across the Galaxy S21 through S26 families, Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip generations, Galaxy Tab S8 through Tab S11 families, selected Galaxy A phones, and newer products such as the Z TriFold.

An older Galaxy phone may receive only a subset of the tools available on a Galaxy S26. Selected A-series phones also have a different AI feature set from flagship S-series devices.
Many older supported devices require One UI 6.1 or later, but the exact requirement depends on the feature. Before buying or upgrading, check the exact model on Samsung’s compatibility page rather than relying on the Galaxy AI label.
What to check before buying a Samsung phone for AI
- Identify the exact model. Compare the specific model number, not only “S series,” “Z series,” or “A series.”
- Check the One UI version. Some features require One UI 6.1 or a later release. On the phone, go to Settings → Software update → Download and install.
- Check your country and language. Samsung says availability can vary by region, carrier, and supported language.
- Separate Samsung from Google. Confirm whether a desired feature is a Samsung basic tool or a Google-powered service with separate account or subscription rules.
- Check internet requirements. Do not assume a free feature operates offline or without cloud processing.
- Read promotional terms. A temporary Google AI or storage trial is not permanent Samsung AI access. Check the expiry date and whether renewal is automatic.
- Consider privacy and output quality. AI results can be inaccurate or incomplete, so verify important translations, summaries, transcriptions, and generated content.
Examples of important limitations
Samsung’s AI features can differ materially by model and implementation. For example, its Gallery guidance says Generative Edit output can be resized up to 12 megapixels, depending on the device, and that AI-generated images may display a Galaxy AI watermark. Results can also vary by image, language, app, and software version.
These limitations matter financially because a buyer comparing phones may otherwise assume that “AI included” means unlimited, identical functionality across the range. It does not.

Galaxy AI versus a paid AI service
Samsung’s built-in AI is primarily a device experience: translation, writing, notes, calls, photos, and other phone functions. A paid service such as Google’s broader AI offering is generally a separate account-based service that may add a general-purpose assistant, cloud storage, higher usage limits, or other ecosystem benefits.
They can overlap, but they are not interchangeable. Someone who only wants Samsung’s translation, note, call, and gallery tools may not need a paid AI plan. Someone seeking a broad chatbot, higher limits, or Google ecosystem features should evaluate that service separately.
What this means for your buying decision
A Galaxy phone can make sense if you value integrated productivity, translation, communication, and photo tools and are comfortable with Samsung and Google accounts, internet requirements, and feature variation by model.
Be more cautious if AI is the main reason for the purchase, if you require guaranteed offline operation, if you object to cloud-assisted processing, or if you need permanent access to a partner’s premium service. In those cases, compare the written terms of the specific phone and service rather than treating Galaxy AI as a single guaranteed benefit.
