Short answer: T-Mobile has earned a credible claim to U.S. network-performance leadership, particularly for speed, 5G experience, and customer-measured performance. But it has not proved that it is the best carrier for every customer—or that it leads Verizon on every measure of reliability, coverage, financial scale, or business strength.
The dispute comes down to methodology. T-Mobile’s June 23, 2025 claim relied on Ookla analysis of more than half a billion real-world tests from millions of devices during the fourth quarter of 2024 and first quarter of 2025. Verizon argued that crowdsourced testing cannot control every variable and pointed instead to controlled testing and reliability results. Both positions can be reasonable because they measure different aspects of network quality.
What T-Mobile actually won
T-Mobile announced on June 23, 2025 that it was the “Best Mobile Network in America,” based on an Ookla analysis of U.S. Speedtest Intelligence data from Q4 2024 through Q1 2025.

According to T-Mobile’s description, the analysis used more than half a billion real-world tests from millions of devices. The company said the results covered both network speed and customer experience across measures such as download performance, 5G performance, and the experience of using mobile applications.

That is meaningful evidence. It suggests that T-Mobile was not merely making a marketing claim based on a small laboratory test or a handful of cities. It also reflects what people experienced with their phones in many real-world situations.
But the result was not a government certification, an industry-wide championship, or proof that T-Mobile wins every category. It was a result under a particular measurement system and during a particular period.
The most accurate interpretation is:
T-Mobile won Ookla’s specified national network-performance assessment. That gives it a strong claim in speed and customer-measured experience, but it does not settle the separate questions of reliability, coverage, customer count, revenue, or local performance.

Why Verizon says “not so fast”
Verizon’s objection was primarily methodological rather than a claim that T-Mobile had failed to improve.
As reported by GeekWire, Verizon argued that crowdsourced tests may not fully control for differences in location, device, traffic, plan, and user behavior. The company said such results can be difficult to reproduce or use for troubleshooting and pointed to controlled drive testing, including RootMetrics’ approach, as a better way to assess reliability.
That distinction matters. A network can deliver the highest average speeds while another performs more consistently on selected roads, in buildings, or during difficult coverage conditions.

So Verizon’s response does not automatically disprove T-Mobile’s result. It highlights that “best network” is not one scientific variable. The winner can change depending on whether the priority is peak speed, consistency, availability, reliability, indoor service, or customer perception.

T-Mobile’s transformation began with its “Un-carrier” strategy roughly 12 years before the 2025 announcement. At the time, T-Mobile openly positioned itself as the weakest of the four national wireless networks and used simpler pricing, aggressive promotions, and customer-friendly policy changes to challenge the established carriers.
The strategy mattered because network leadership is not created by advertising alone. T-Mobile used its marketing momentum to attract customers, generate cash flow, and justify continued investment in spectrum, towers, software, and 5G infrastructure.
The Sprint merger was the major inflection point
T-Mobile’s 2020 acquisition of Sprint was central to the company’s later network position. Sprint held valuable mid-band spectrum, which became particularly important for 5G capacity and speed. Mid-band frequencies can provide a useful balance: substantially more capacity and speed than low-band coverage spectrum, without the very short range associated with the highest-frequency bands.
T-Mobile used Sprint’s spectrum and other network assets to accelerate its nationwide 5G buildout. The merger also brought additional customers and infrastructure, although it involved integration costs, regulatory scrutiny, and obligations connected with supporting customers affected by the transaction.

The merger did not automatically make T-Mobile number one. A better explanation is that it amplified an already aggressive strategy involving customer acquisition, spectrum deployment, 5G investment, and network modernization.

Standalone 5G and network investment
T-Mobile executives credited the company’s lead in deploying a standalone 5G core, along with its spectrum position and tower footprint. Those comparisons are company claims and should be treated as such rather than as independently verified rankings.
A standalone 5G core can allow operators to use more of 5G’s intended network architecture instead of relying primarily on a 4G core. The practical benefit depends on deployment quality, compatible devices, applications, and local capacity. It is an important technical foundation, not a guarantee that every customer will see a faster connection.
A scorecard: where T-Mobile leads—and where the answer remains unsettled

Does T-Mobile have the most customers?
Not necessarily—and the question needs a definition.

However, “largest carrier” can mean several different things:
- Total customer connections.
- Retail wireless connections.
- Branded postpaid phone subscribers.
- Consumer subscribers.
- Business customers.
- Revenue, profitability, or market capitalization.
A network-performance award does not establish leadership in all of those categories. The defensible conclusion is that T-Mobile had become a major, fast-growing operator and a network-performance leader under several measurements. That is different from proving dominance on every measure of corporate scale.
What T-Mobile’s progress means for your phone bill
For consumers, the national winner matters less than the network at home, work, and along regular travel routes. A faster national average may not improve your experience if the nearest cell site is congested, your building blocks the signal, or your plan receives lower priority during busy periods.

Before switching carriers, compare:
- Your actual locations: Check service at home, work, school, regular highways, and frequently visited rural areas.
- Your device: Confirm that the phone supports the carrier’s relevant 5G bands and, where applicable, satellite features. An older 5G phone may not support every capability used in newer networks.
- Plan priority: Compare premium-data allowances, deprioritization rules, hotspot limits, video restrictions, and network-management terms.
- Total family cost: Include taxes, fees, device payments, insurance, promotional expiration dates, and the cost of moving multiple lines.
- Switching costs: Check whether paying off a phone would cause you to lose remaining trade-in credits or promotional discounts.
- Travel needs: Compare international roaming, rural coverage, and service on the routes you use—not just the national headline.
- Support requirements: Business and family customers may value account support and billing stability more than a higher speed test.
Customers using an MVNO should also be careful when comparing results. An MVNO may use the same underlying network but offer different priority, roaming access, video policies, or customer support.
Satellite service is a new frontier, not a replacement for cellular service
T-Mobile’s partnership with Starlink adds a competitive dimension beyond terrestrial towers. Satellite-to-phone connectivity can be valuable in places without a usable cellular signal, especially for messaging and limited applications.
It does not provide the same experience as ordinary mobile broadband. Satellite links face constraints involving capacity, latency, visibility, device compatibility, and the type of application supported. Verizon has pursued satellite-related efforts involving Amazon’s Project Kuiper, while AT&T has partnered with AST SpaceMobile. The larger question is whether satellite-to-phone service becomes a meaningful everyday differentiator or remains primarily a safety and rural-coverage supplement.
T-Mobile reported in its Q1 2025 results that its satellite-to-phone beta worked on most modern smartphones, had attracted hundreds of thousands of active users, and had delivered more than one million messages. Those figures are company-reported and tied to that reporting period.
Can T-Mobile remain the “Un-carrier” after becoming an incumbent?
T-Mobile’s outsider identity helped it win customers. Its next challenge is maintaining that value proposition while operating at national scale and claiming leadership.
The risks are familiar:
- Price increases or more complicated plans that weaken its value message.
- Promotional fine print that makes savings difficult to compare.
- Customer-service deterioration as the company grows.
- Congestion if customer additions outpace capacity investment.
- Loss of its speed advantage as Verizon and AT&T densify their networks.
- Reliance on awards and slogans instead of measurable improvements.
For customers, competition is beneficial only if it produces better service, clearer pricing, and reasonable switching options. T-Mobile’s rise gives consumers more leverage, but a larger carrier can also become less disruptive over time.

What later evidence adds
T-Mobile’s own later-2025 materials cited continued recognition from Ookla, Opensignal, and J.D. Power. Its description of a 2026 J.D. Power result said customers rated T-Mobile highest for network quality across six U.S. regions and that the study involved 20,050 wireless customers.
Those developments strengthen the argument that T-Mobile’s 2025 result was not an isolated speed-test moment. They still do not create a single composite ranking. Ookla, Opensignal, and J.D. Power use different data, questions, samples, and definitions of quality. The results should be read as multiple pieces of evidence, not as one universal crown.
The bottom line for customers and investors
T-Mobile completed a remarkable transformation from the weakest national network to a credible performance leader. Its Sprint-fueled spectrum position, 5G investment, customer growth, and strong showing in real-world and customer-experience measurements explain why its claim deserves to be taken seriously.

So, has T-Mobile become the top dog? Yes, if the claim is limited to the network-performance categories where it has demonstrated leadership. No, if “top dog” means the universally best, most reliable, largest, or financially dominant carrier for everyone. For a household deciding whether to switch, the decisive evidence remains local coverage, plan priority, device compatibility, total annual cost, and the real-world experience at the places that matter most.
